Neuropsychological correlates of theory of mind in chronic migraine.

OBJECTIVE: Theory of mind (ToM), the ability to understand other minds-that is, their beliefs, intentions (cognitive ToM), or emotions (affective ToM)-and its neuropsychological mechanisms in migraine have been poorly investigated. The aim of the study was to explore the deficit of cognitive and affective ToM and its possible associations with cognitive functioning in patients with chronic migraine (CM). METHOD: Forty participants with CM and 40 age-, education-, and sex-matched healthy controls (HC) underwent clinical assessment, cognitive (the ToM Pictures Sequencing Task and the Advanced T

Cognitive dysfunction in individuals with cocaine use disorder: Potential moderating factors and pharmacological treatments.

It is well-documented in the literature that individuals repeatedly exposed to cocaine exhibit cognitive impairment and that cognitive dysfunction is a risk factor for poor treatment outcomes in those with cocaine use disorder (CUD). Specific deficits related to attention, episodic memory, working memory, and executive functioning are the most common deficits noted in this population. Given that cognitive impairment is a risk factor for poor treatment outcomes in those with CUD, identifying possible moderating factors contributing to and/or exacerbating cocaine-related cognitive deficits is of

A chronometric model of the relationship between frontal midline theta functional connectivity and human intelligence.

Individual differences in cognitive control have been suggested to act as a domain-general bottleneck constraining performance in a variety of cognitive ability measures, including but not limited to fluid intelligence, working memory capacity, and processing speed. However, owing to psychometric problems associated with the measurement of individual differences in cognitive control, it has been challenging to empirically test the assumption that individual differences in cognitive control underlie individual differences in cognitive abilities. In the present study, we addressed these issues b

The inflammatory profiling in a cohort of older patients suffering from cognitive decline and dementia.

BACKGROUND: During aging, there is a progressive impairment of immune cell function that triggers the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines causing the so-called "inflammaging". Frailty represents a condition of increased vulnerability to stresses and reduced homeostatic reserve reflecting not only health status but also biological age. In older subjects without dementia, we showed that markers of inflammaging were differently associated with chronological age than with frailty. This study analysed the same markers in older people with cognitive decline and/or dementia. METHODS: The cohort

Examination of objective and subjective cognition and their association with functional outcomes: A cross-sectional study in a Canadian sample of homeless and precariously housed adults.

OBJECTIVE: Using a cross-sectional design, our aim was to examine whether objective and subjective cognition differentially relate to everyday functioning and quality of life in homeless and precariously housed adults. As an exploratory aim, we examined whether associations between cognition and outcomes differ by age and gender. METHOD: Participants were 88 community-dwelling adults experiencing homelessness or precarious housing in Toronto, Canada. Participants completed measures of objective cognition, subjective cognition, quality of life, and perceived everyday functioning. Linear regres

Development and preliminary validation of a cognitive-physical frailty index in an older adult cohort: The NEDICES study.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a multidimensional syndrome characterised by reduced physiological reserve and increased vulnerability to adverse health outcomes. While traditional frailty models focus primarily on physical decline, emerging evidence supports the integration of cognitive domains for a more comprehensive assessment. We wished to develop and preliminarily validate a cognitive-physical frailty index using data from a large, prospective population-based cohort of older adults in central Spain. METHODS: We constructed a frailty index based on 12 variables spanning physical, cognitive, subj

Effects of Long-Term Institutionalization on the Linguistic-Communicative Performance of Patients with Schizophrenia.

Background/Objectives: This study examines the impact of long-term institutionalization on the linguistic and communicative abilities of peo … and foster improved communication and social skills. These findings are consistent with research on cognitive reserve, which suggests that education fosters adaptive strategies and the utilization of alternative neural pathways. This enables individuals to maintain communication skills despite the cognitive impairment associated with schizophrenia.

[Enteral nutrition and major neurocognitive disorders: For whom? When?].

Malnutrition is a common condition in patients with dementia, especially in severe cases. It is associated with cognitive decline. Enteral nutrition (EN) should be considered when a high-calorie, high-protein oral diet fails and after a careful assessment of the benefit-risk balance. In the presence of dementia, the initiation of EN should be a multidisciplinary decision. Guidelines from scientist society recommend reserving EN for patients with mild to moderate cognitive disorders for a short period to manage a reversible acute episode. In individuals with severe dementia, no benefit on survi

Impact of a multimodal prehabilitation program on postoperative cognitive dysfunction: a single-center randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a frequent complication after cardiac surgery. Exercise-based prehabilitation may enhance functional reserve and reduce vulnerability to perioperative cerebral insults. We hypothesized that multimodal prehabilitation reduces POCD 3 months after cardiac surgery. METHODS: This prespecified substudy of a single-center randomized controlled trial (NCT03466606) included patients aged ≥50 years undergoing elective coronary artery bypass grafting and/or valve surgery. Participants were randomized 1:1 to 4-6 weeks of multimodal prehabilitation

Current perspectives on prevention of vascular cognitive impairment and promotion of vascular brain health.

INTRODUCTION: The true global burden of vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) is unknown. Reducing risk factors for stroke and cardiovascular disease would inevitably curtail VCI. AREAS COVERED: The authors review current diagnosis, epidemiology, and risk factors for VCI. VCI increases in older age and by inheritance of known genetic traits. They emphasize modifiable risk factors identified by the 2020 Lancet Dementia Commission. The most profound risks for VCI also include lower education, cardiometabolic factors, and compromised cognitive reserve. Finally, they discuss pharmacological and non…
