A 39-year-old woman presented at 29 weeks and 4 days of gestation with abdominal pain and chronic constipation. The abdominopelvic magnetic resonance and ultrasound imaging were not conclusive. Computed tomography showed evidence of bowel perforation. Surgical exploration demonstrated significant stool burden, purulent peritonitis, and frank perforation of the sigmoid colon. Hartmann's procedure was successfully performed, with no complications. The patient had an uneventful postoperative course. She was induced at 37 weeks due to preeclampsia and had a vaginal delivery with no complications.

Vasculitis is an inflammatory process of the blood vessels, characterized by leukocyte infiltration in the vessel wall and reactive damage to the mural structures. They have a wide clinical spectrum and can present in a localized or systemic manner. Colonic involvement primarily manifests as abdominal pain and rectal bleeding. Less commonly, it can be associated with colonic perforation or anastomotic leakage after colorectal surgery. We report a case of a 42-year-old man with a history of HIV and proctocolitis who presented with an unexpected vasculitis of the sigmoid colon.

This case report describes a 52-year-old man who presented with 2 weeks of left lower quadrant pain and bloody stool. Computed tomography revealed a 4 cm, fat-density mass acting as a lead point for intussusception of the sigmoid colon. Colonic volvulus (CV) is the third leading cause of colonic obstruction in adults. In infants and children, this is exceedingly rare, with only sporadic cases reported so far. In comparison, adult intussusception is rare and is often secondary to inflammatory diseases, benign or malignant tumors and motility disorders. Being a benign cause, lipomas appear as a particularly rare gastrointestinal tumor.

The authors report a case of gallstone ileus of the sigmoid colon in an 80-year-old woman admitted to the hospital with symptoms and signs of large bowel obstruction and asymptomatic cholelithiasis. Radiological investigation (abdominal X-ray and CT scan) showed a large gallstone impacted in the sigmoid colon. At first, the patient was managed conservatively, but the recurrence of the intestinal obstruction required open cholecystectomy, suturing of the colonic fistula and sigmoidectomy.

We present a case of perforated giant diverticulum of the sigmoid colon. This condition is extremely rare and only a few cases have so far been reported in the literature. Our case involved a 55-year old woman. Diagnosis was easy with barium enema and CT scan examination. Laparotomy revealed a giant diverticulum of the sigmoid colon compressing adjacent structures with signs of inflammation. An en bloc resection of the sigmoid colon, ovary and fallopian tube was performed with primary colon-rectal anastomosis. The post-operative course was uneventful.

We report a case of abdominal actinomycosis in a young woman wearing an intrauterine contraceptive device. The patient presented with right lower abdominal pain. A diagnostic laparoscopy was performed. Intraoperatively two perforations of the sigma were detected, a sigmoidectomy was performed. Postoperatively no problems occurred. OBJECTIVES: The study of 15 cases of colonic reconstruction for absent vagina. The outcome in cases of reconstruction of an artificial vagina using the colon is evaluated.
METHODS: Fifteen female patients with congenital absence of vagina who were evaluated and treated with sigmoid colonic reconstruction at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana were studied.
RESULTS: This reconstructive method is successful in patients having a functioning vagina without progressive shrinkage or other symptoms. Disfigurement of the thighs and labia are avoided as is the need for active manipulation.
