Comparison of measurement methods for the characterization of the black carbon emissions from a T63 turboshaft engine burning conventional and Fischer-Tropsch fuels.

Emission measurements of black carbon (BC) mass were conducted on a T63 turboshaft engine, operated at idle and cruise power with conventional and alternative fuels, using an Artium LII-300 laser-induced incandescence analyzer (LII) and AVL model 483 micro soot sensor (MSS) photoacoustic instrument using the manufacturer's calibration for both instruments. These measurements were compared with elemental carbon (EC) determined by manual and semicontinuous thermal-optical transmission analyses according to National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) method 5040 as the reference

Effective coverage practice in Ethiopia.

Effective coverage measurement has emerged as a tool to help understand health system performance for the provision of high-quality health care. Using a cascade approach that combines data on demand- and supply-side steps, effective coverage measures highlight where gaps in the health system exist and how improvements might be made so that more people benefit from the potential of the health services available to them. In practice, however, there are challenges in making this work. This analysis paper aimed to highlight those challenges in calculating effective coverage in Ethiopia, using ante

The use of time-driven activity-based costing in ophthalmology: A scoping review.

In healthcare economics, time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) and activity-based costing (ABC) are increasingly utilized, yet their applications within ophthalmology remain undefined and non-standardized. A literature search was performed using the standards of Preferred Reporting Items for Systemic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRIMSA-ScR). Studies were subjected to 3 rounds of screening, with 3 separate data extractions to summarize study characteristics, TDABC-specific parameters, and secondary or sensitivity analysis. Out of the 27 included articles, 11 uti

Genomic structural equation modeling elucidates the shared genetic architecture of allergic disorders.

BACKGROUND: The intricate shared genetic architecture underlying allergic disorders-including allergic asthma, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, allergic urticaria, anaphylaxis, and eosinophilic esophagitis-remains incompletely characterized. METHODS: Our study employed genomic structural equation modeling (Genomic SEM) to define the common factor representing the shared genetic architecture of allergic disorders. Coupled with diverse post-GWAS analytical methods, we aimed to discover susceptible loci and investigate genetic associations with e

PI3K signaling specifies proximal-distal fate by driving a developmental gene regulatory network in SOX9+ mouse lung progenitors.

The tips of the developing respiratory buds are home to important progenitor cells marked by the expression of SOX9 and ID2. Early in embryonic development (prior to E13.5), SOX9+progenitors are multipotent, generating both airway and alveolar epithelium, but are selective progenitors of alveolar epithelial cells later in development. Transcription factors, including Sox9, Etv5, Irx, Mycn, and Foxp1/2 interact in complex gene regulatory networks to control proliferation and differentiation of SOX9+progenitors. Molecular mechanisms by which these transcription factors and other signaling pathwa

Iron isotopes reveal distinct dissolved iron sources and pathways in the intermediate versus deep Southern Ocean.

As an essential micronutrient, iron plays a key role in oceanic biogeochemistry. It is therefore linked to the global carbon cycle and climate. Here, we report a dissolved iron (DFe) isotope section in the South Atlantic and Southern Ocean. Throughout the section, a striking DFe isotope minimum (light iron) is observed at intermediate depths (200-1,300 m), contrasting with heavier isotopic composition in deep waters. This unambiguously demonstrates distinct DFe sources and processes dominating the iron cycle in the intermediate and deep layers, a feature impossible to see with only iron concen

The legislation on living organ donation in Western Europe: legal and ethical analysis and impact on clinical practice.

In Europe there are various directives on living organ donation (LOD) that are applied differently in member countries. The objectives of this study were as follows: (1) to identify the most relevant normative differences among the countries of Western Europe, and (2) to evaluate the evolution of LOD data in these countries. We performed comparative analysis of national legislations to identify the most significant common and different regulatory elements that were evaluated subsequently from an ethical-legal point of view. For data analysis on LOD, we used the EULOD database of donations in E

Technology to remotely capture key elements of swallowing and speech: State of the science in Parkinson's disease.

Swallowing and speech impairments are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and can significantly affect health and quality of life. Traditional methods for assessing and managing these functions rely on in-person visits and large, expensive equipment, which are inaccessible to many patients. Recent advances in health technologies offer opportunities for remote monitoring and assessment, enabling early detection, personalized intervention, and longitudinal tracking of swallowing and speech deficits in PD. This review synthesizes evidence on current and emerging technologies designed to remotely c

A fusion approach of YOLOv8 and CNN-Transformer for End-to-End road anomaly detection.

Surveillance cameras are common in both the private and public sectors for security and monitoring, and closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems are used for surveillance, generating large amounts of video data that cannot be manually monitored 24/7. The traditional approach to analysis is time-consuming and inefficient, and there is a growing need for automated surveillance systems that can recognize and classify anomalies. The research area that has been the most challenging to solve is AD systems that detect anomalies in data that is not structured according to the normal patterns. RNNs are

Common Endpoints in Studies of Image-Based Guidance in External Ventricular Drain Placement: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: External ventricular drain placement (EVD), is a widely used procedure utilized to relieve intracranial pressure due to a variety of pathological conditions, such as hemorrhage or hydrocephalus. EVD placement is generally performed at the bedside using a freehand technique. This can lead to malpositioning of the catheter tip, especially in patients with pathologies that result in displacement of the lateral ventricles, midline shift, and a low bicaudate index. Novel developments in technology have allowed for image-guided navigation systems to be implemented into EVD placement procedu

Mechanisms of neurotoxicity of fluoride or aluminum: implications for neurodegenerative disease risk.

Fluoride and aluminum are two naturally abundant elements with widespread industrial uses. Fluoride is also added to community water supplies as a public health intervention for dental cavity prevention. However, findings from animal studies show potential links of fluoride and aluminum exposure with neurodegenerative disease risk, particularly at high exposure levels. This review uniquely examines neurochemical and neurobiological impacts of fluoride and aluminum exposure as well as whether these processes may increase the risk of common and rare neurodegenerative diseases, including dementia

Pathophysiology of colorectal peritoneal carcinomatosis: Role of the peritoneum.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer and the fourth most common cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Besides the lymphatic and haematogenous routes of dissemination, CRC frequently gives rise to transcoelomic spread of tumor cells in the peritoneal cavity, which ultimately leads to peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC). PC is associated with a poor prognosis and bad quality of life for these patients in their terminal stages of disease. A loco-regional treatment modality for PC combining cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal peroperative chemotherapy has result
