The mobility, host, and co-occurrence of antibiotic resistance genes in multi-type pig manure-soil systems: Metagenome assembly analysis.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) pose significant threats to public health and environmental safety, yet the mobility and hosts of ARGs in animal manure-soil systems remain poorly understood. Here, we evaluated the environmental risks of tilmicosin (TIL) and investigated ARG profiles, mobility, and drivers in pig manure-soil systems using metagenomic assembly. TIL was effectively degraded during aerobic composting and fertilization via hydroxylation, demethylation, and deglycosylation. Notably, the total abundance of ARGs significantly decreased during aerobic composting and fertilization, a…

Using the heat generated from electrically conductive concrete slabs to reduce antibiotic resistance in beef cattle manure.

Proper treatment is necessary to reduce antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in livestock manure before land application. Conventional stockpiling suffers unreliable removal efficiency, while composting can be complicated and expensive. The objective of this study was to test the feasibility of a novel heat-based technology, i.e., stockpiling manure on conductive concrete slabs, to inactivate ARB and ARGs in beef cattle manure. In this study, two independent bench-scale trials were conducted. In both trials, samples were taken from manure piles on conducti…

Deciphering the Formation Mechanism of Recalcitrant Microplastics during Bioplastic Degradation in Aerobic Environment.

Biodegradable plastics are frequently characterized as materials capable of complete mineralization under specific environmental conditions. Although the application of bio-based substitutes for traditional plastics has become widespread, numerous studies have reported that these materials also contribute to microplastics contamination and plastic pollution. However, the formation and degradation dynamics of recalcitrant microplastics remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated the degradation behavior of two typical compostable polyester plastics over a 100-day period under aero

Pseudomonas putida as the dominant toluene-degrading bacterial species during air decontamination by biofiltration.

The microbial communities established in three laboratory-scale compost matrix biofilters fed with toluene were characterized. The biofilters were operated for 7 weeks at inlet concentrations of toluene ranging over 250-500 ppm with daily irrigation, using a nutrient solution containing variable concentrations of nitrogen, supplied as urea, and other inorganic salts. The indigenous microflora of the compost included toluene-degrading species, making inoculation unnecessary. The numerically predominant toluene-degrading strains were isolated from the most diluted positive wells of most-probable

Tailor-made biochar systems: Interdisciplinary evaluations of ecosystem services and farmer livelihoods in tropical agro-ecosystems.

Organic matter management is key to sustain ecosystem services provided by soils. However, it is rarely considered in a holistic view, considering local resources, agro-environmental effects and harmonization with farmers' needs. Organic inputs, like compost and biochar, could represent a sustainable solution to massive current challenges associated to the intensification of agriculture, in particular for tropical regions. Here we assess the potential of agricultural residues as a resource for farmer communities in southwestern India to reduce their dependency on external inputs and sustain ec

Study of an Outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N8 in Commercial Pekin Ducks ( Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) in California.

A February 2015 outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N8 in a flock of commercial Pekin ducks ( Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) in California was investigated in detail. Approximately 17,349 five-wk-old ducks experienced an increased mortality from a normal of eight birds per day to 24, 18, 24, 33, and 61 birds per day, respectively, in the last 5 days prior to flock depopulation. Clinically, there was decreased water and feed consumption, and approximately 1.0% of the affected flock exhibited neurologic signs. Necropsy of five clinically ill ducks revealed pale, patchy areas o

Phytotoxic effects of sewage sludge extracts on the germination of three plant species.

In order to evaluate the ability of three types of extracts to explain the ecotoxicological risk of treated municipal sewage sludges, the OECD 208A germination test was applied using three plants (Lolium perenne L., Brassica rapa L., and Trifolium pratense L.). Three equivalent batches of sludge, remained as dewatered sludge, composted with plant remains and thermally dried, from an anaerobic waste water treatment plant were separated. Samples from these three batches were extracted in water, methanol, and dichloromethane. Plant bioassays were performed and the Germination Index (GI) for the t

Substrate-Driven Microbiome Assembly in Water Hyacinth Vermicompost: Combined 16S rRNA and Shotgun Metagenomics for Sustainable Agriculture.

Substrate composition is a primary determinant of microbial succession and functional dynamics in vermicomposting systems. However, comparative insights into how biomass pre-treatment influences microbial architecture and how different sequencing approaches capture these changes remain limited. In this study, evaluation was carried out on microbial community structure and metabolic potential in vermicompost derived from three forms of Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) biomass, burnt biomass (BB), composted biomass (CB) and dry biomass (DB) using both 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and s…

Vertical and Temporal Dynamics of Metal(loid)s during Soil Remediation with Sewage Sludge-Derived Amendments and Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron.

Valorising sewage sludge (SS) into soil amendments aligns waste management with circular-economy principles. Here, a three-layer outdoor macrocosm system was designed to track the temporal and vertical redistribution of metal(loid)s under field-representative conditions. Six 1 m3 macrocosms containing polluted sandy soil overlying clean clayey soil and a sand drainage layer were amended with composted SS or SS-derived hydrochar, alone or combined with nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI), and monitored for one year. Hydrochar markedly increased porewater metal(loid) concentrations in the polluted

Impact of soil amendments on reducing phosphorus losses from runoff in sod.

Received for publication December 22, 2004. Research was initiated to study the interaction between soil amendments (lime, gypsum, and ferrous sulfate) and dissolved molybdate reactive phosphorus [RP(<0.45)] losses from manure applications from concentrated runoff flow through a sod surface. Four run-over boxes (2.2-m2 surface area) were prepared for each treatment with a bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] sod surface (using sod blocks) and composted dairy manure was surface-applied at rates of 0, 4.5, 9, or 13.5 Mg ha-1. The three soil amendments were then applied to the boxes. Two 30

Biofiltration of Bioaerosols Emitted from Organic Waste Management Facilities: A Review.

Bioaerosol emissions from biological treatment processes like composting, livestock operations, and wastewater plants pose notable occupational and environmental health risks. Biofiltration is a common mitigation measure for gaseous pollutants, but its effectiveness in controlling bioaerosols is less studied. This review synthesizes current evidence on biofiltration for the removal of bioaerosols. Findings indicate that biofiltration can significantly reduce emissions from waste-related biological processes, although results vary widely and depend heavily on design and operational factors. In …

Fungal-augmented biofertilizer increases soil nutrient availability, alters rhizosphere community structure, and improves plant growth.

Converting lignocellulosic waste into biofertilizers offers a sustainable practice for waste valorization, yet the mechanistic links underpinning how such amendments affect the soil-plant system remain poorly elucidated. We hypothesized that fungal-augmented biofertilizers improve plant growth through direct nutrient release and shifts in rhizosphere microbial community composition. To test this hypothesis, we isolated a white-rot fungus, Bjerkandera adusta strain QX3-19, which exhibited high ligninolytic activity. Inoculation with QX3-19 during composting of forest residues substantially enha…

Is the application of organic fertilizers becoming an undeniable source of microplastics and resistance genes in agricultural systems?

The application of organic fertilizers is becoming an undeniable source of microplastics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in agricultural soils. The complex microbial activity further transfers resistance genes and their host bacteria to agricultural products and throughout the entire food chain. Therefore, the current main focus is on reducing the abundance of microplastics and ARGs in organic fertilizers at the source, as well as managing microplastics and ARGs in soil. The control of microplastic abundance in organic fertilizers is currently only achieved through pre-composting select…

Antagonistic effects of actinobacteria on fecal coliforms in sludge vermicomposting: Studies based on ecological and biochemical perspectives.

Although actinobacteria play a crucial role in sludge vermicomposting, their succession dynamics and antagonistic mechanisms against pathogenic bacteria during vermicomposting process remain unclear. This study investigated the changes of actinobacterial communities and their antagonistic effects on fecal coliforms (FC) from ecological and biochemical perspectives by comparing sludge treatments with and without earthworm inoculation. Results showed that the addition of earthworms could lead to a significantly different degradation pathway of sludge. Compared to the control, the relative abunda…

A comprehensive study of food waste management and processing in the Czech Republic: Potential health risks and consumer behavior.

Food waste is currently a widely discussed phenomenon with significant economic and social consequences. One third of the food produced in the world is wasted at various points along the food supply chain. This article presents a comprehensive study that examines consumer behavior in dealing with food waste and activities in the composting process that enable waste sanitation. The survey conducted as part of this study showed that consumers want to eliminate odors, are concerned about potential infections, and generally sort less food waste. This study suggested that the addition of appropriat…
