[Inconsistent condom use among Mexican women living with HIV: a challenge for health services].

OBJECTIVE: To describe condom use among Mexican women living with HIV and analyze factors that facilitate or impede its utilization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Qualitative analysis of 55 interviews with women of reproductive age living with HIV. RESULTS: Inconsistent condom use and non-use at last sexual intercourse was common, and not clearly related to the male partners' HIV-status. Factors that influenced condom use included perceptions of health benefits, symbolic meaning assigned to the condom within the relationship, and the transformation or persistence of inequitable gender norms. CONCL

Infrequent condom use with casual partners among New Zealand gay and bisexual men.

AIMS: To identify predictors of non-condom use among gay and bisexual men (GBM) in New Zealand with casual male partners. METHODS: We analysed anonymous self-completed data from GBM who participated in the communitybased Gay Auckland Periodic Sex Survey (GAPSS) and Internet-based Gay Online Sex Survey (GOSS), undertaken in 2014. Infrequent condom use was defined as not using condoms "always" or "almost always" during anal intercourse in the prior six months. RESULTS: Of the 1,912 GBM reporting anal intercourse with a casual partner, 27.2% reported infrequent condom use. Being recruited from …

Decision Processes about Condom Use among Shelter-Homeless LGBT Youth in Manhattan.

Health behavior interventions based on Theory of Planned Behavior address participants' personally-held beliefs, perceived social norms, and control over the behavior. New data are always needed to "member check" participants' decision processes and inform interventions. This qualitative study investigates decision processes around condom use among 81 homeless LGBT youth ages 18-26. Findings indicated considerable endorsement of the conventional policy of always using condoms, promulgated in HIV prevention education targeting this population. Although some participants reported risk behavior i…

Behavior, intention or chance? A longitudinal study of HIV seroadaptive behaviors, abstinence and condom use.

Seroadaptive behaviors have been widely described as preventive strategies among men who have sex with men (MSM) and other populations worldwide. However, causal links between intentions to adopt seroadaptive behaviors and subsequent behavior have not been established. We conducted a longitudinal study of 732 MSM in San Francisco to assess consistency and adherence to multiple seroadaptive behaviors, abstinence and condom use, whether prior intentions predict future seroadaptive behaviors and the likelihood that observed behavioral patterns are the result of chance. Pure serosorting (i.e., hav

A little thing called love: condom use in high-risk primary heterosexual relationships.

CONTEXT: Condoms are less likely to be used in primary relationships than in other relationship types. An understanding of what women and men expect when entering into these relationships, as well as how they make decisions about condom use and other prevention behaviors, is essential to efforts to curb the spread of HIV. METHODS: Qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with 25 high-risk heterosexual couples, including HIV-serodiscordant couples, participating in a trial of the female condom in Hartford in 2004-2007. Data were coded and analyzed in an iterative inductive and deductive …

Slips, breaks and 'falls': condom errors and problems reported by men attending an STD clinic.

The objective was to comprehensively assess the prevalence of condom-use errors and problems among male clients attending a public sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic. Men (n = 278) attending an STD clinic completed an anonymous questionnaire. Seven errors and six problems were assessed. Summative scores were tested for associations with three key variables. Of 834 condom-protected events: 19% were associated with 'fit and feel' problems, 15% involved breakage, 14% involved lost erection, 9% were associated with lost erection while applying condoms, 8% involved slippage during withdrawal…

Sex trade in a male-to-female transgender population: psychosocial correlates of inconsistent condom use.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that because of economic necessity, many male-to-female (MTF) transgender individuals trade sex for money, drugs, housing, and other things they may need. To date, no studies have quantitatively assessed psychosocial correlates of condom use with this population. METHODS: We conducted a cross sectional study with 190 MTF transgender individuals involved in sex trade in San Francisco, California. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine factors independently associated with inconsistent condom use during receptive anal sex with exchange partners. RE

Client-perpetuated violence and condom failure among female sex workers in southwestern China.

OBJECTIVES: This research examined factors associated with condom failure, i.e., slippage or breakage, among female sex workers (FSWs) in China. Special attention was paid to the association between client-perpetuated violence and condom failure. METHODS: Two hundred FSWs were recruited for a community-based voluntary human immunodeficiency virus prevention project. Participants completed a face-to-face structured questionnaire that collected information on their sociodemographic characteristics, working conditions, experience of client-perpetuated violence, and sexual risk behavior. RESULTS

The female condom as a temporary silo: a simple and inexpensive tool in the initial management of the newborn with gastroschisis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to report the use of a female condom as a non-surgical silon pouch in the early management of newborns with gastroschisis with large visceroabdominal disproportion. METHODS: Pre-washed, sterile female condoms without spermicide were used as an early approach to treat gastroschisis in 20 newborns with large defects and in whom staged correction was anticipated. The condom was placed in the neonatal intensive care unit using sterile technique, with no anesthesia, and it was removed only at the time of the surgical procedure for gastroschisis correction. A negative association between condom availability and incidence of urethral discharge in a closed Malawian community.

Condom promotion in sub-Saharan Africa has been accused by some conservative groups of encouraging promiscuity. This study explored the relationship between condom availability and sexually transmitted infection (STI) incidence in a closed Malawian community. An audit of clinic records charted the changing availability of condoms and the concurrent incidence of patients presenting with STI-associated urethral discharge (UD). When condoms first became available, their distribution steadily increased and the UD incidence declined. During a three-month period of unavailability, this previously un…

Correlates of partner-specific condom use intentions among incarcerated women in Rhode Island.

CONTEXT: Few studies of incarcerated women have examined potential associations between risky sexual behavior and relationship context factors; thus, little is known about the correlates of intentions to use condoms with main and casual partners in this underserved population. METHODS: A sample of 221 women incarcerated in a Rhode Island Department of Corrections facility in 2002-2003 were interviewed. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to assess associations between selected demographic, psychosocial and behavioral variables and participants' reported intentions to use condoms…

Condom use among low-income African American males attending an STD clinic.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate condom-use attitudes and behaviors among low-income, primarily African American, male patients seeking care at an urban sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic. METHODS: Via face-to-face interviews, 224 males completed a theory-based questionnaire regarding condom use. RESULTS: The results show that although respondents had obvious signs and symptoms of infection and that 65% were "repeaters" at the clinic, 66% of the sample reporting a main partner and 33% of those with other types of sexual partners were not motivationally ready to use condoms consistently. Condom effectiveness for reducing transmission of gonorrhea and chlamydia: the importance of assessing partner infection status.

This analysis examined the importance of differential exposure to infected partners in epidemiologic studies of latex condom effectiveness for prevention of sexually transmitted infections. Cross-sectional, enrollment visit data were analyzed from Project RESPECT, a trial of counseling interventions conducted at five publicly funded US sexually transmitted disease clinics between 1993 and 1997. The association between consistent condom use in the previous 3 months and prevalent gonorrhea and chlamydia (Gc/Ct) was compared between participants known to have infected partners and participants wh

Use-effectiveness of the female versus male condom in preventing sexually transmitted disease in women.

BACKGROUND: Data are limited on the female condom's effectiveness against STDs. GOAL: The goal was to compare STD rates between women given small-group education on, and free supplies of, either female or male condoms. STUDY DESIGN: Female patients at an STD clinic (n = 1442) were randomly assigned to condom type and followed via medical records for STDs (gonorrhea, chlamydia, early syphilis, or trichomoniasis). RESULTS: In an intention-to-treat analysis, the odds ratio for a comparison of STD occurrence between the female and male condom groups was 0.75 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.56-…

Consistent condom use among drug-using youth in a high HIV-risk neighbourhood.

The objectives of this study were to determine predictors of consistent condom use in heterosexual relationships of young adults who use hard drugs in a neighbourhood with widespread drug-use-connected HIV. We interviewed 196 18-24 year olds who injected drugs or used heroin, cocaine or crack in the prior year and lived in the Bushwick neighbourhood of New York City. Interviews covered sociodemographics, substance use and sexual networks. The unit of analysis is the relationship; the dependent variable measures consistent condom use over the prior 30 days in a given relationship. Consistent co

The biological safety of condom material can be determined using an in vitro cell culture system.

Latex products have long been recognized as a cause of latex protein allergy. The increased usage of latex gloves, with the consequent increased occurrence of latex allergies appears to have escalated with increasing awareness of the transmission of HIV-AIDS and other infections. The use of condoms as a means to prevent the transmission of STD's (sexually transmitted diseases) and HIV-AIDS has been widely promoted. Although extensive testing is done to evaluate the physical quality of condoms, no information is available regarding the biological safety of condoms. This study was undertaken to …
