BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that maternal cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking during pregnancy may increase risk for febrile convulsion during childhood. We evaluated the relationship of maternal smoking, alcohol drinking, and their interaction on febrile convulsion.
METHOD: Pregnant women (n=10,108) enrolled in the Child Health and Development Studies in California between 1959 and 1966 were interviewed about their habits during pregnancy and febrile convulsions of the child were ascertained soon after an event.
RESULTS: Febrile convulsions were reported in 2.9% of childr

The incidence of convulsive status epilepticus in children is approximately 20-50/100,000/year, and is an emergency requiring prompt medical intervention. Prolonged seizures lasting over 5 min are unlikely to stop spontaneously, and time-to-treatment influences treatment response. Prolonged seizures should thus be treated as early status epilepticus. Mortality and morbidity increase significantly with the length of ongoing seizure activity, especially after 60 min. Benzodiazepines remain the first-line drug therapy due to their rapid onset of action. Recent studies imply that buccal midazolam

INTRODUCTION: Vein of Galen arteriovenous malformation (VGAM) appears during the embryonic period and gives rise to a complex network of arterial and venous vessels that generates a blood shift, from the brain parenchyma towards the malformation, with haemodynamic repercussions. Heart failure is the most frequent presenting symptom during the neonatal period, yet, convulsions or other neurological signs have occasionally been reported in this stage of life.
CASE REPORT: A term infant with symptoms of heart failure and convulsions that began during the first 12 hours of life. CAT and magnetic

Bovine familial convulsion and ataxia, a heritable disorder, is present in crossbred Aberdeen Angus cattle in western Canada. Though the prevalence appears to be low, this genetic defect might become widespread if not controlled. Characteristic histological lesions were seen in the lingula, uvula, or both, of all affected calves regardless of their age.

It has been suggested that sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and febrile convulsions are related aetiologically. We compared the risk of SIDS in 9877 siblings of children who had had febrile convulsions with that of 20 177 siblings of children who had never had febrile convulsions. We found no support for the shared susceptibility hypothesis.

We present a case in which a rare and serious complication with respiratory arrest and convulsions occurred after peribulbar anesthesia for cataract surgery. To our knowledge, respiratory arrest has been described as a complication only of retrobulbar, not peribulbar, anesthesia. Anesthesiologists trained in airway maintenance and ventilatory support should be available for immediate help when a peribulbar block is performed.

BACKGROUND: Some changes in the levels of proinflammatory cytokines, prostaglandins and zinc (Zn) in peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) have been suggested to occur for the pathogenesis of febrile convulsions (FC).
METHODS: In order to test this hypothesis, the levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interleukin (IL)-1 alpha, IL-1 beta and prostaglandins (PGE(2), PGF(2 alpha), PGD(2)) in the CSF and plasma and the levels of Zn in serum and CSF were investigated in children during the acute and late phases of FC. Results were compared with control subjects with meningismus.

Children with complex febrile convulsions bear a higher risk of developing epilepsy than children with simple febrile convulsions. Complex febrile convulsions are defined by the presence of prolonged seizures, partial seizures and multiple seizures occurring during the same day. The aim of this study is to delineate the relative significance of each of the three criteria defining complex febrile convulsions. Fifty-seven out of 477 children (12%) admitted for febrile convulsions had complex febrile convulsions and normal neurological examination. Follow-up was available for 48 (84%) of them. Th

Febrile convulsions are common in early childhood and may be the first sign of an illness. Witnessing the convulsion and experiencing the subsequent admission is extremely stressful for parents. Children's nurses need to identify the evidence for best practice in the management of febrile convulsions. Parent education is an essential component of the management of care.

BACKGROUND: Benign infantile non febrile seizures are not well known, leading us to study their clinical and EEG characteristics.
METHODS: Between 1981 and 1994, we assembled 34 patients with the following inclusion criteria: non febrile seizures between 1 month and 2 years of age, normal personal history, no abnormality on clinical, biological and radiological investigations, normal developmental outcome with at least 1 year follow-up.
RESULTS: These 34 patients were recognized as 14 familial cases (identical seizures affecting parents) and 11 non familial cases. The other nine cases had di

A case of a 40-year-old psychiatric patient is reported. Primarily, he was thought to have epileptic seizures, but demonstrated acute symptoms of severe hyponatraemia, plasma sodium was 106 mmol/l. Treatment was initiated with hypertonic saline until regression of symptoms, followed by slow correction of serum sodium to subnormal level. The patients outcome was good. This treatment is discussed focusing on the importance of an immediate onset, despite that the cause of hyponatraemia may be unknown.

The purpose of this study was to study the effects of giving information to parents with febrile convulsive children. All parents of children with febrile convulsions who are seen at Worcester Royal Infirmary are given information. Fifty parents of children who had had a first febrile convulsion during May 1996 to December 1996 were interviewed by telephone from July to September 1997. The same questions were asked of 50 parents of children who came to a community health clinic and who had not had febrile convulsions. The design used open questions and covered medical history, general child he

Pro-convulsant withdrawal properties have been reported for a variety of GABA-modulatory drugs, such as the benzodiazepines (BDZs, [S.E. Brain excitability has been inconsistently reported to be increased both in hypo- and hyperthyroidism, but there have been few studies on the effects of thyroid hormones on brain excitability in children. With this in mind, we investigated the incidence of febrile convulsions (FCs) among patients with congenital hypothyroidism, who have been taking L-thyroxine since the age of 1 month. The incidence of FCs among congenital hypothyroid patients was 1.6% (1/63) which was significantly low (p < 0.05) compared with that of normal control children who visited our hospitals as outpatients (28/341, 8

We report on a 27-year-old woman of non-convulsive status epilepticus (NSE) very probably induced by antidepressants. She has no history of febrile convulsions, or epileptic seizures. There are no genetic factors for epilepsy in her family. As she developed depressive illness, she consulted a doctor. Clomipramine 25 mg i.v. drip/day and maprotiline 75 mg/os/day were started. Recently she began to doze, so an EEG was performed. Continuous generalized 2-3 Hz spike and wave complexes were observed. Clomipramine and maprotiline were stopped the same day, and the patient's drowsiness gradually impr

Zinc modulates the activity of glutamic acid decarboxylase, the rate limiting enzyme in the synthesis of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter. Low cerebrospinal fluid GABA values have been reported in association with several seizure disorders, including febrile convulsions. It is also known that fever and/or infections may cause a reduction in serum zinc concentrations. In this study the hypothesis that febrile convulsions are related to low cerebrospinal fluid zinc was tested. Cerebrospinal fluid zinc concentrations were measured in 66 febrile children
