Revisiting institutional punishment in the N-person prisoner's dilemma.

The conflict between individual and collective interests makes fostering cooperation in human societies a challenging task, requiring drastic measures such as the establishment of sanctioning institutions. These institutions are costly because they have to be maintained regardless of the presence or absence of offenders. Here, we revisit some improvements to the standard N-person prisoner's dilemma formulation with institutional punishment in a well-mixed population, namely the elimination of overpunishment, the requirement of a minimum number of contributors to establish the sanctioning insti

Introducing the Harm Reduction Collaboration Framework for Policy, Systems, and Environmental Change.

A revised way of thinking is essential for promoting harm reduction strategies and reducing the negative implications of injection drug use (IDU). Despite the growth of harm reduction approaches in the United States, there is limited guidance for designing and implementing multi-sector efforts that address the external determinants that promote and facilitate IDU. Current frameworks fail to acknowledge the individual's role and influence in multi-sector change. To address the multifaceted nature of IDU, we must address the complex relationship between people who inject drugs (PWID) and their e

Bidirectional understanding and cooperation: interbrain neural synchronization during social navigation.

The complexity of the environment requires humans to solve problems collaboratively. The aim of this study was to investigate the neural mechanism of social navigation in group problem-solving situations. A novel cooperative task was designed in which dyadic participants assumed the role of an operator or a navigator with different skills and knowledge and worked together to complete the task. Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy-based hyperscanning, we found stronger interbrain neural synchronization of the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) between dyads when the operator received

Promising practices for the collaborative planning of integrated health campaigns from a synthesis of case studies.

A combination of public health campaigns and routine primary healthcare services are used in many countries to maximise the number of people reached with interventions to prevent, control, eliminate or eradicate diseases. Health campaigns have historically been organised within vertical (disease-specific) programmes, which are often funded, planned and implemented independently from one another and from routinely offered primary healthcare services. Global health agencies have voiced support for enhancing campaign effectiveness, including campaign efficiency and equity, through collaboration a

Participatory research: a Priority Setting Partnership for chronic musculoskeletal pain in Denmark.

OBJECTIVES: Patient and stakeholder engagements in research have increasingly gained attention in healthcare and healthcare-related research. A common and rigorous approach to establish research priorities based on input from people and stakeholders is the James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership (JLA-PSP). The aim of this study was to establish research priorities for chronic musculoskeletal (MSK) pain by engaging with people living with chronic MSK pain, relatives to people living with chronic MSK pain, healthcare professionals (HCP), and researchers working with chronic MSK pain. Physical Therapists Know Function: An Opinion on Mobility and Level of Activity During Hospitalization for Adult Inpatients.

Negative consequences of immobility during hospitalization are widely known and remain undisputed. Evidence of low mobility for general medicine adult inpatients persists. Patients who experience hospital acquired functional decline due to low mobility require costly post-acute care services. The impact of immobility on post-acute care physical function and quality of life is directly at odds with value-based care. New Medicare payment models emphasize value-based care to promote care improvement and better patient outcomes. Quality improvement projects show promise in changing clinical practi

The Secrets of Great Teamwork.

Over the years, as teams have grown more diverse, dispersed, digital, and dynamic, collaboration has become more complex. But though teams face new challenges, their success still depends on a core set of fundamentals. As J. Richard Hackman, who began researching teams in the 1970s, discovered, what matters most isn't the personalities or behavior of the team members; it's whether a team has a compelling direction, a strong structure, and a supportive context. In their own research, Haas and Mortensen have found that teams need those three "enabling conditions" now more than ever. But their wo

Indirect reciprocity can overcome free-rider problems on costly moral assessment.

Indirect reciprocity is one of the major mechanisms of the evolution of cooperation. Because constant monitoring and accurate evaluation in moral assessments tend to be costly, indirect reciprocity can be exploited by cost evaders. A recent study crucially showed that a cooperative state achieved by indirect reciprocators is easily destabilized by cost evaders in the case with no supportive mechanism. Here, we present a simple and widely applicable solution that considers pre-assessment of cost evaders. In the pre-assessment, those who fail to pay for costly assessment systems are assigned a n

Aspiration dynamics in structured population acts as if in a well-mixed one.

Understanding the evolution of human interactive behaviors is important. Recent experimental results suggest that human cooperation in spatial structured population is not enhanced as predicted in previous works, when payoff-dependent imitation updating rules are used. This constraint opens up an avenue to shed light on how humans update their strategies in real life. Studies via simulations show that, instead of comparison rules, self-evaluation driven updating rules may explain why spatial structure does not alter the evolutionary outcome. Though inspiring, there is a lack of theoretical res

The psychosemantics of free riding: dissecting the architecture of a moral concept.

For collective action to evolve and be maintained by selection, the mind must be equipped with mechanisms designed to identify free riders--individuals who do not contribute to a collective project but still benefit from it. Once identified, free riders must be either punished or excluded from future collective actions. But what criteria does the mind use to categorize someone as a free rider? An evolutionary analysis suggests that failure to contribute is not sufficient. Failure to contribute can occur by intention or accident, but the adaptive threat is posed by those who are motivated to be

Align, share responsibility and collaborate: potential considerations to aid in e-health policy development.

AIM: Policies that support strategic development and implementation are related to health ICT implementation successes. This research aimed to explore the question, 'Why have we not seen more successful ICT implementation in healthcare, and what does policy have to do with success?' BACKGROUND: Healthcare systems are faced with rising costs, increased prevalence of chronic diseases and diminishing resources. E-health initiatives have gained acceptance in addressing these crucial health sector issues. National governments and healthcare organisations are finding it necessary to have health Inf

Who really makes the big decisions in your company?

In many companies, the top management team is officially responsible for helping the CEO make a company's big decisions. But another, unofficial group usually does that job de facto. That's the way it should be, argues Frisch, of the Strategic Offsites Group, provided that the CEO is deliberate in devising the role of this informal and unnamed "kitchen cabinet." Problems can nevertheless arise when senior executives learn about important decisions after the fact, mistakenly assume that they have real power to protect their departments, and find themselves in a system where the way decisions ar

Improving IV iron and anemia management in the hemodialysis setting: a collaborative CQI approach.

Patients on hemodialysis may suffer from iron-defciency anemia ensuing from impaired erythropoiesis due to kidney disease and the ongoing loss of blood during the hemodialysis procedure, among other clinical factors. Effective treatment of iron-deficiency anemia is critical for patients but can be challenging for nurses and fellow staff members because proper management requires a balance between erythropoietin-stimulating agents and intravenous iron therapy. Implementing a continuous quality improvement program that focuses on a collaborative approach to managing iron-deficiency anemia can su

What do we know about cognitive and motivational effects of small group tutorials in problem-based learning?

Students collaborating in small groups is a characteristic of problem-based learning (PBL) that is receiving increased consideration in the literature. In this paper findings from studies in this area are synthesized and discussed. A distinction is made between studies focusing on cognitive effects of group learning and studies focusing on motivational effects of group learning. Studies concentrating on the cognitive effects of small-group PBL seem to demonstrate that activation of prior knowledge, recall of information, causal reasoning or theory building, cognitive conflicts leading to conce

Stuttering therapy in partnership with support groups: the best of both worlds.

The current challenges facing school-based speech-language pathologist (SLPs) make it increasingly difficult to provide "best practice" services for children who stutter. Traditional modes of therapy alone do not meet many of the needs of children who stutter and their families. Using an interdisciplinary "team" approach to therapy that incorporates support organizations may increase the probability of positive outcomes for children who stutter. By facilitating the introduction of a support organization experience into the direct therapy process, the school-based SLP is uniquely positioned to

Observational evaluation of compliance with traffic regulations among helmeted and nonhelmeted bicyclists.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether helmeted bicyclists are more compliant with traffic regulations than nonhelmeted bicyclists. METHODS: This prospective observational study, using a convenience sample, was conducted during daylight hours at three separate intersections, marked with legal stop signs, near the campus of a major university. Data collected included helmet use, legal hand signal use to indicate a turn or stop, and whether the bicyclist came to a complete stop before proceeding through the intersection. RESULTS: A total of 1,793 bicyclists were evaluated. Only 8.8% of the bicyc
