The optic chiasm and the corpus callosum: their relationship to binocular vision in humans.

The semidecussation of the optic nerve fibers in humans serves to facilitate the motor coordination of the two eyes. The Corpus Callosum in humans serves to facilitate the integration of stimuli from opposite cerebral hemispheres. Stereopsis and motor fusion are two distinct and separate qualities of binocular vision, and each alone can indicate central and/or peripheral binocular vision. Stereopsis is not an indicator for binocular stability.

[Interhemispheric disconnection syndrome in glioma of the posterior part of the corpus callosum].

The syndrome of interhemispheric disconnexion has been systematically researched in 10 cases of medial and posterior callosal tumours. The cases have been documented with CT Scann and two of them were anatomically verified. Two had a complete disconnexion syndrome; another, whose lesion was situated on the forceps major, had no sign of disconnexion. In the others, the semiology was proportional to the extent of the tumour, sometimes minimal and in this case, only corresponding to an extinction of the left ear in the dichotic test, which therefore appeared in our series as the most constant sig

[Agenesis of the corpus callosum in a man with complete mosaic trisomy 8].

The coexistence in an epileptic patient of a radiologically confirmed agenesis of the corpus callosum and other somatic abnormalities, notably skeletal, prompted us to perform a karyotype which showed an extra chromosome 8. The trisomy 8-callosal agenesis association is not exceptional, but it may easily be missed owing to the absence or scarcity of clinical signs of the cerebral malformation. We would suggest that patients with confirmed agenesis of the corpus callosum should be investigated for trisomy 8 and conversely, that patients with trisomy 8 detected during examination for a character…

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita in an infant with posterior agenesis of the corpus callosum.

A term male infant with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita and agenesis of the corpus callosum is described. Physical examination revealed multiplex dysmorphic features and fixed joints. A muscle biopsy showed type II fibers to be more than 12% smaller than type I fibers, consistent with the diagnosis of fiber type disproportion. The CT scan disclosed absence of the posterior corpus callosum and moderate atrophy of the cerebellar hemispheres. The pathogenetic mechanism for the muscle (and thus joint) abnormalities of this infant is discussed with respect to a central etiology.

Absence of the corpus callosum: computed tomographic evaluation in infants and children.

Absence of the corpus callosum (ACC) has a characteristic finding on computed tomography of an elevated third ventricle interposed between the lateral ventricles. Ten children with ACC, 8 with associated craniocerebral lesions, are presented. The chief importance of computed tomography is in the accurate demonstration of ACC and its commonly associated intracranial lesions, some of which can be surgically treated. Secondly, the diagnosis of ACC implies, to the clinician, a greater degree of cellular brain maldevelopment.
