The craniofacial complex develops mainly in the first trimester of pregnancy, but its final shaping and the development of the teeth extend into the second and third trimesters. It is intimately connected with the development of the brain because of the crucial role the cranial neural crest cells play and the fact that many signals which control craniofacial development originate in the brain and vice versa. As a result, malformations of one organ may affect the development of the other. Similarly, there are developmental connections between the craniofacial complex and the teeth. Craniofacial

A 42-year-old man with a history of migraine and bilateral syndactyly presented with numbness of the extremities and shaking legs, which thus prevented him from working as a carpenter. A neurological examination revealed spastic paraparesis with pathological reflexes on all four extremities. Oculo-dento-digital dysplasia (ODDD) was suspected based on his medical history and characteristic facial appearance including small eye slits, thin mouth, and pinched nose with anteverted nostrils. Genetic tests revealed a gap junction alpha 1 (GJA1) gene mutation and confirmed the diagnosis of ODDD. His

There are many congenital ocular malformations associated with systemic findings. In cases such as oculocerebrocutaneous syndrome, the severity of systemic findings makes diagnosis particularly important. This case report presents a case of this uncommon syndrome and demonstrates the common findings.

Using longitudinal roentgencephalometry, we studied craniofacial growth in two children with mandibulofacial dysostosis. In one child, data were supplemented by three-dimensional reconstructions of CT scans and stereolithographic models of the craniofacial skeleton. Progressive basilar kyphosis was found in both children, the hypothesized caused being bending of the cranial base at the level of the sphenofrontal suture. Such bending acting in concert with abnormal growth of the mandible led to impairment of the airway. We advocate careful monitoring of craniofacial growth and respiratory funct

Abnormal craniofacial bone fusion can lead to the generation of several congenital malformations such as cleft palate, craniosynostosis and craniofacial skeletal hypoplasia, which physically and mentally affect patients. Conventional approaches for the treatment of craniofacial malformations such as the transplantation of autologous bone grafts are not completely efficient and usually, patients suffer from various complications. In line with these statements, the advent of novel therapeutic approaches in human medicine is mandatory. Regarding the extent, size and severity of the bone malformat

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial microsomia is a common congenital condition for which children receive longitudinal, multidisciplinary team care. However, little is known about the etiology of craniofacial microsomia and few outcome studies have been published. In order to facilitate large, multicenter studies in craniofacial microsomia, we assessed the reliability of phenotypic classification based on photographs by comparison with direct physical examination.
METHODS: Thirty-nine children with craniofacial microsomia underwent a physical examination and photographs according to a standardized prot

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Craniofacial abnormalities are a risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We have previously shown that phenotypic information derived from craniofacial photographs predict OSA in sleep clinic populations. However, there are likely ethnic and sex differences in craniofacial phenotypes related to OSA. We aimed to assess the use of craniofacial photography to identify interactions between OSA, ethnicity, and sex in craniofacial phenotype.
METHODS: Frontal and profile craniofacial photographs were analyzed from two sleep clinic populations of different ethnicity (Hong Kon…

Treacher Collins syndrome is a rare but well studied autosomal dominant craniofacial malformation syndrome. Most reports to date have focused on the facial morphology of this distinctive syndrome, but several more recent investigations have described abnormalities of the basicranium, mandible, and upper airway. The purpose of this report is to describe craniofacial morphology in a sample population of 12 patients with Treacher Collins syndrome. A special emphasis is placed on cranial base and mandibular structure because of the airway problems often encountered in this syndrome.

Sotos syndrome is a rare genetic disorder presenting with craniofacial abnormalities, profound hypotonia, and cardiac abnormalities, giving rise to several potential challenges and concerns for an anesthesiologist. When preparing for a Sotos syndrome patient's case, we consulted the literature for precedents on how to plan the anesthetic, to which we were only able to find a few reports and nothing in the age group our patient fell within. We present our case of an adult in addition to examining the previous cases so as to document a precedent when encountering patients with this syndrome in t…

Roberts syndrome (RS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized primarily by symmetric reduction anomalies of all limbs, growth retardation and craniofacial abnormalities. Most RS patients are reported to present a typical abnormality of their constitutive heterochromatin, accompanied by abnormal cytological growth characteristics. We present an extremely severe case of an RS fetus, karyotypically documented, with a clinical presentation including growth deficiency, tetraphocomelia, frontal meningocele, craniofacial abnormalities and penile enlargement with hypospadias. Nuclear morp…

The Greig cephalopolysyndactyly syndrome is an uncommon dysmorphic syndrome characterized by preaxial and postaxial polysyndactyly and minor craniofacial anomalies. It has an autosomal dominant inheritance. A review of the literature has failed to show documentation of any dental or oral abnormalities. Therefore, we report on a patient with Greig syndrome who had a maxillary fibro-osseous lesion and multiple dental and oral abnormalities.

The teratogenic effects of retinoic acid, the alcohol-soluble acid form of vitamin A, on the craniofacial complex of 11 macaque (Macaca nemestrina) whose mothers had received the compound from days 20 to 44 are described. The fetuses ranged in gestational age from 81 to 185 days and exhibited features of the so-called retinoic acid syndrome (RAS). The syndrome includes both craniofacial defects and postcranial anomalies of the musculoskeletal and urogenital systems. The craniofacial anomalies were described with reference to gross external appearance and radiographic observations. The most fre

Snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) affect a significant percentage of children. Recent studies have suggested that altered craniofacial morphology may contribute to the multifactorial pathophysiology of OSA. This study aims to determine the prevalence of craniofacial abnormalities and malocclusion in children referred for polysomnography due to OSA suspicion. This is a multicentre prevalence study completed across four Canadian sites. Otherwise, healthy children (≥ 4 years old) who were seen at the sleep clinic were recruited. Upon arrival for their hospital-based overnight sleep recor…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The possible relationship of orbit deformities in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) to plexiform neurofibromas (PNFs) have not been fully elucidated. Our purpose was to review orbital changes in patients with craniofacial NF1.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed CT and MR imaging abnormalities of the orbit in 31 patients (18 male, 13 female; mean age, 14 years; age range 1-40 years) with craniofacial NF1.
RESULTS: Orbital abnormalities were documented in 24 patients. Six had optic nerve gliomas with enlarged optic canals. Twenty had PNFs in the orbit or contiguous to th

INTRODUCTION: We report the case of a patient with a craniofacial black bone disease. This was discovered accidentally during a coronal approach.
CASE REPORT: A 38-year-old patient was referred to our unit for facial palsy having appeared 10 years before. Rehabilitation of the facial palsy was performed with a lengthening temporal myoplasty and lengthening of the upper eyelid elevator. An unusual black color of the skull was observed at incision of the coronal approach. Subperiostal dissection of skull and malars confirmed the presence of a black bone disease. A postoperative history revealed
