Prevalence of ocular disorders among 6- and 7-year-olds in Santa Monica, California.

BACKGROUND: Undetected ocular disorders can cause serious problems in a child's mental and social development. METHODS: To investigate relationships between ocular disease, gender and ethnicity in children, vision screening examination data was analyzed from the UCLA Mobile Eye Clinic (MEC), collected from 1985 to 1990 on first graders (69.9 percent 6- and 30.1 percent 7-year-olds) in Santa Monica, California. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 1,469 individuals, of whom 48.1 percent were female and 51.9 percent were male. Ethnicity data was available from 1988 to 1990 on 834 individuals, of w

[Sexual mutilation in women].

The sexual mutilations, a fairly topical subject, remain very frequent (between 80 and 100 millions). The excisions are in practice mainly in Africa (in at last 20 countries), but also in the Far-East and Indonesia. In some cases, such practices are very mutilative (Pharaonic infibulation). They may drag to the death, through haemorrhage or infection. The short and long term medical complications are fearful, tetanus, vesicovaginal fistulae, vaginal or vulvar sclerosis, forbidding any sexual involvement and hampering delivery. The grounds of these practices are basically customary and not reli

Changes in the living arrangements of older women: an international study.

This study analyzes trends in the percentage of older women living alone in 21 European and North American countries over the period of 1960-1992. The general pattern is one of substantial annual increases in the percentage of elderly women living alone. This trend is shown to result mainly from demographic changes, with little evidence of a role for economic variables. The analysis suggests a reversal of the current trend in coming years, as mothers of postwar baby booms reach old age.

[Etiology of secondary glaucoma at university clinics in Munich and Nairobi].

Glaucoma is one of the most common blinding diseases worldwide. For early detection and treatment of this insidious ailment investigations of risk factors are necessary, most of which require extensive technically demanding and time consuming procedures. Basic information on risk factors for the development of glaucomatous damage is essential for diagnosis of glaucoma, for the identification of groups at risk, and for the planning of prevention and intervention programs. Epidemiological data on secondary glaucomas is especially scarce, while at the same time the strict distinction between prim

Perceptual accuracy as measured by the Rorschach: are American norms applicable for cross-cultural assessment?

Cross-cultural applications of Rorschach's test assume that American norms may be applied, but this assumption has little empirical basis. In fact, several such investigations have indicated that culture-specific norms must be employed on key variables employed to assess subjects' perceptual accuracy. The current study compared responses of 19 Spanish children who scored low on a reading measure and were considered by their teachers to experience significant reading problems with 19 peers who scored significantly higher on that reading measure and who experienced no apparent reading problems.

A Portuguese/Brazilian study of Expressed Emotion.

Expressed Emotion is a measure of family interaction, widely used in studies around the world to predict relapse in severe psychiatric disorders. The instrument was originally developed in London. It depends on subtle vocal nuances emerging in the course of the Camberwell Family Interview (CFI). The extent to which these can be picked up in different languages and different cultures is an interesting question. This paper presents the results of a study of EE from Brazil. The two raters achieved good reliability with master tapes in English, and the CFI was then translated into Portuguese. The

Cross-cultural aspects of the somatization trait.

Studies using a variety of diagnostic rating scales have identified much higher levels of somatic symptoms in Hispanic psychiatric patients, particularly those with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or depression, than in their Anglo counterparts. However, this cultural difference cannot be generally demonstrated by using DSM-III somatoform disorders criteria. Many patients with "unfounded" somatic symptoms have another DSM-III primary diagnosis that is often assumed to cause or explain the somatic symptoms. In addition, the true prevalence of unfounded somatic symptoms is hidden because of the str

Obese and non-obese American Indian and Caucasian performance on the mini-mult MMPI and I-E scale.

Recent concerns over high incidences of obesity among various American Indian tribes and groups have been ignored by the psychological literature. Relationships between obesity and MMPI and I-E Scale scores have been reported without regard for ethnicity. This study compared urbanized obese and non-obese American Indians and Caucasians on the Mini-Mult MMPI and I-E Scale (N = 160). Major findings included such results as the fact that the Indian sample had higher Hypomania scale scores than the Caucasian sample and that males had higher Depression and Hypochondriasis scale scores than females.

DESIGN: A cross-sectional, quantitative design was employed. METHODS: Following Brislin's translation model, the PICASN underwent translation, back-translation, synth

German version of the Chelsea Critical Care Physical Assessment Tool (CPAx-GE): translation, cross-cultural adaptation, validity, and reliability.

PURPOSE: To translate and cross-culturally adapt the Chelsea Critical Care Physical Assessment tool from English to German (CPAx-GE) and to examine its validity and reliability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following a forward-backward translation including an expert round table discussion, the measurement properties of the CPAx-GE were explored in critically ill, mechanically ventilated adults. We investigated construct, cross-sectional, and cross-cultural validity of the CPAx-GE with other measurement instruments at pre-specified timepoints, analysed relative reliability with intraclass correlati
