Turning Pineapple Crown Waste Into Value: Formulation and Analysis of an Instant Powder Beverage.

Pineapple processing generates significant waste, with the crowns accounting for 28%. The crowns are rich in nutrients and phytochemicals and offer potential for high value-added bioactive products such as herbal infusion. Therefore, this work aims to develop and characterize a microencapsulated bioactive beverage powder from pineapple crown infusion. The crowns were dried, ground, and added to water (90°C; 10 min) to obtain the infusion. The microcapsules were obtained by adding maltodextrin to the infusion and drying by freeze-drying (FD) or spray-drying (SD). Physicochemical parameters, mor…

Effect of Pendant Groups in Double-Armed Crown Ethers on Lead Radionuclide Chelation.

A series of pyridine-containing diaza-18-crown-6 ethers with acetate, phosphonate, acetamide, and picolinate arms were synthesized and fully characterized for Pb2+ binding to identify their potential for applications in [203/212Pb]Pb-based radiopharmaceuticals. Their coordination chemistry with the Pb2+ ion was investigated by potentiometry, UV-vis spectrophotometry, mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, radionuclide labeling, as well as in vitro and in vivo experiments. It was shown how the nature of the pendant arms and the presence of a rigid pyridyl unit in the macrocycli

Spontaneous Cervical Epidural Hematoma Mimicking Crowned Dens Syndrome: A Case Report.

Crowned dens syndrome (CDS) typically manifests as acute neck pain accompanied by calcifications around the odontoid process. However, such findings may obscure more serious underlying pathologies. We report a case of an 85-year-old man on edoxaban who presented with acute neck pain and atlantoaxial calcifications on computed tomography (CT), initially suggestive of CDS. Subsequent mild neurological deficits prompted cervical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which revealed a spontaneous cervical epidural hematoma (SCEH) extending from C2 to C4. The patient was managed conservatively and achie

Crowned Dens Syndrome Presenting as Failure to Thrive in a Patient With Moderate Cognitive Impairment.

Crowned dens syndrome (CDS) is a rare condition characterized by the deposition of calcium pyrophosphate (CPP) or hydroxyapatite crystals around the odontoid process of the C2 vertebra, often presenting with acute neck pain, reduced cervical mobility, and systemic inflammatory response. This case describes a 68-year-old male patient with a history of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and benign prostatic hyperplasia who presented with generalized weakness and failure to thrive. This atypical presentation initially masked symptoms of CDS, delaying the diagnosis until the patient developed acute ne

Endoscopic Retrieval of Displaced Maxillary Third Molar Crown: A Pediatric Endonasal Approach.

Iatrogenic displacement of third molars is a rare but significant complication of dental extractions, particularly in children where unique anatomic and developmental factors pose additional challenges. This report describes the case of a 12-year-old female who presented with a displaced maxillary third molar crown into the left maxillary sinus following dental extraction. This displacement resulted in acute orbital cellulitis, which was initially managed with oral antibiotic therapy. Endoscopic endonasal retrieval of the foreign body 4 months later was recommended after the initial infection

Correlations of gingival biotype with clinical crown and periodontal parameters in maxillary and mandibular jaws.

BACKGROUND: The gingival biotype (GB) influences treatment planning and clinical outcomes in several dental specialties. This study aimed to investigate the associations between the GB and various clinical crown and periodontal parameters, such as probing depth (PD), papillary height (PH), keratinized tissue width (KTW), crown width/crown length ratio (CW/CL), and gingival thickness (GT). The secondary objective was to evaluate the optimal cutoff values for all parameters to determine the GB in both the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 50 h

3D intraoral scanning techniques support the effects of crown morphology on dental caries.

BACKGROUND: With the development and utilization of three-dimensional (3D) intraoral scanning (IOS) technology, the morphological characteristics of teeth were quantitatively assessed. In this research, we aimed to explore the prevalence of dental caries in relation to each measurable morphological indicator of the tooth body via 3D intraoral scanning techniques. METHODS: A hospital-based single-centre study was conducted at our hospital from Dec. 2021 to Apr. 2023. A total of 53 patients were involved in the study, providing complete morphological data for 79 teeth. Each patient completed an

Construction of chiral crown ethers in robust covalent organic frameworks for electrochromatographic enantioseparation.

Capillary electrochromatography (CEC) is a rapidly emerging separation technique that merges the high separation efficiency of capillary electrophoresis with the exceptional selectivity of liquid chromatography. However, it remains a synthetic challenge to design functional chiral stationary phases (CSPs) with high chemical stability against acid and base in CEC enantioseparation. Here we demonstrate that incorporating chiral crown ethers into stable covalent organic frameworks (COFs) enables efficient and stable separations of racemates by CEC. This facilitates the crafting of two three-dimen

The relationship of tooth crown dimensions between first molar and central incisor in maxilla.

The purpose of this study was to investigate a correlation between the cusp dimensions of the first molar and mesiodistal crown diameters of the central incisors in the maxilla. The study materials were composed of dental casts from 29 modern Japanese female subjects with a mean age of 20 years and 8 months. The mesiodistal crown diameters of the maxillary central incisors were measured. The mesiodistal and bucco-lingual crown diameters and the cusp diameters of the maxillary first molars, such as the paracone, metacone, protocone, and hypocone, were also measured. The crown areas and indices

Large field-of-view holographic Maxwellian display based on spherical crown diffraction.

Maxwellian display, as an effective solution to the vergence accommodation conflict in near-eye displays (NEDs), has demonstrated its unique advantages in many aspects, such as the ability to provide sharp images within a certain depth of field (DOF) without being affected by the eye's focus. In recent years, the appearance of holographic Maxwellian displays has addressed the shortcomings of traditional Maxwellian displays, meeting the demands for flexible control parameters, aberration-free designing, and expanded eyebox. Nonetheless, the human eye's requirement for immersion still leaves roo

Crowned Dens Syndrome: A Rare Complication of Calcium Pyrophosphate Crystal Deposition Disease.

Crowned dens syndrome (CDS) is a clinical entity characterized by neck pain associated with fever, headaches, and neck stiffness, along with radiologic evidence of peri-odontoid process calcification in a characteristic "crown" or "halo" distribution. It is likely an underdiagnosed condition and patients can initially be misdiagnosed, leading to costly evaluation and unnecessary treatment interventions. We present the case of a 76-year-old man who presented to the emergency department (ED) with a 3-day history of progressively worsening neck pain that was associated with headaches, malaise, de

Fracture resistance and failure mode of layered translucent zirconia with different crown designs.

This study investigated the impact of different veneering design on the fracture resistance and failure mode of layered translucent zirconia crowns, compared to the full monolithic zirconia crowns. Ninety crowns with different designs were divided into six groups (n=15); one fully contoured monolithic crown (FMC), one fully veneered with porcelain (FVC), or four partially veneered designs. All crowns were thermo-cycled, and then loaded to failure in a universal testing machine. The fracture resistance (N) and fracture modes were assessed. One-way ANOVA was performed followed by Tukey's multipl…
