Oregano essential oil alone and in combination with biogenic silver nanoparticles exhibits anti-Toxoplasma gondii activity in human trophoblastic cells.

INTRODUCTION: Toxoplasmosis, caused by Toxoplasma gondii, is a globally significant zoonosis, particularly severe in immunocompromised individuals and in ocular and congenital infections. Conventional treatment with pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine is limited by its toxicity, highlighting the need for safer and more effective alternatives. In this context, oregano essential oil (Origanum vulgare L., OEO) and biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNp-Bio) have emerged as promising candidates due to their vast antiparasitic activity and low toxicity. METHODS: This study evaluated the anti-T. gondii eff

Potent and selective anticancer activity of half-sandwich ruthenium and osmium complexes with modified curcuminoid ligands.

We have recently reported a series of half-sandwich ruthenium(II) complexes with curcuminoid ligands showing excellent cytotoxic activities (particularly ionic derivatives containing PTA (PTA = 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane). In the present study, new members of this family of compounds have been prepared with the objective to investigate the effect of a long hydrophobic chain obtained by replacing the OH-groups, present in curcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin, with the palmitic acid ester. We report the synthesis of ruthenium(II) and osmium(II) p-cymene derivatives containing palmitic acid cu

Sensory properties of selected terpenes. Thresholds for odor, nasal pungency, nasal localization, and eye irritation.

We tested four normosmics and four anosmics in detection thresholds for six terpenes commonly found indoors: cumene, p-cymene, delta-3-carene, linalool, 1,8-cineole and geraniol. Normosmics provided odor thresholds and anosmics provided nasal pungency thresholds. All subjects provided nasal localization (i.e., right/left nostril) and eye irritation thresholds. Each type of threshold was measured eight times per subject-stimulus combination. Stimuli were presented from squeeze bottles in a two-alternative forced-choice procedure via an ascending method of limits. Odor thresholds ranged between

Cymbopogon citratus and Lippia multiflora essential oils as alternative repellent to DEET against Anopheles gambiae s.l. in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso.

Personal protective tools, such as repellents, play a vital role in preventing mosquito-borne disease transmission. Although N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET), a synthetic repellent, is effective against insects, it may cause allergic reactions. Therefore, there is a need to explore effective alternative repellents exhibiting fewer side effects. Here, we assessed the repellent activity of essential oils (EOs) from Lippia multiflora and Cymbopogon citratus alone and in combination, against Anopheles populations, using the Human Landing Catch (HLC) method in Dogona, Burkina Faso.
