Locally Aggressive Hepatic Echinococcosis With Colonic Involvement Requiring a Right Hemicolectomy: A Case Report and Focused Literature Review.

Echinococcosis most commonly presents as a slowly enlarging hepatic cyst, whereas extensive inflammatory extension with colonic involvement is uncommon. We report the case of an 80-year-old man who presented with abdominal pain and fever and reported having been aware of a hepatic echinococcal cyst for approximately 30 years. CT showed a giant calcified hepatic cyst containing an air-fluid level and intralesional gas, suggestive of secondary infection; intraoperative cyst-fluid culture subsequently grew Escherichia coli. Emergency laparotomy revealed dense inflammatory adherence to the transve

Interdural cyst of the lumbosacral region.

The purpose of this report is to call attention to the clinical, myelographic, and computed tomographic appearance of a very rare type of dural cyst within the lumbosacral spinal canal. We report this condition in three unrelated boys who presented with symptoms of cauda equina compression. Our experience suggests that these cysts are congenital in origin. Anatomically, the cyst wall consisted of a dura-like layer without arachnoid. There was a small ventral defect allowing incomplete communication with the compressed subarachnoid space. Cerebrospinal fluid-like fluid accumulated within the in

A case of neurenteric cyst of spine mimicking an arachnoid cyst.

BACKGROUND: Intradural cysts of the spine are arachnoid cysts, neuroenteric cysts, and ependymal cysts. The usual finding in case of a neurenteric cyst is a ventrally located non-contrast-enhancing lesion that is isointense on T1-weighted sequence and hyperintense on T2-weighted imaging. An arachnoid cyst is hypointense in T1-weighted image and hyperintense in T2-weighted image, mimicking cerebrospinal fluid(CSF), and the location is dorsal to the cord. But a neurenteric cyst can mimic an arachnoid cyst in appearance. CASE: A 48-yr old autorikshaw driver presented with weakness of fingers and

Overexpression of Aquaporin 1 on cysts of patients with polycystic liver disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Polycystic liver disease (PCLD) represents a group of genetic disorders that include autosomal dominant polycystic … expression levels in cysts of different sizes. Besides, ionic concentrations, pH and osmolality of cyst fluid were analyzed. RESULTS: The results showed that AQP1 expression in PCLD cysts was significantly higher than that in simple liver cysts and the normal bile ducts. In addition, a comparable increasing trend was found in cysts of smaller sizes to cyst …

Zinc alpha-2 glycoprotein levels in serum and breast fluids: a potential marker of apocrine activity.

Zinc alpha-2 glycoprotein (ZnGP) was measured in human breast microcysts, breast secretions, breast cyst fluid and serum. Detectable amounts of ZnGP were found in all fluids but the highest levels were found in microcysts. Apocrine macrocysts had a higher ZnGP level than flattened macrocysts. In both cysts and secretions levels of ZnGP correlated with those of dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate. Levels were significantly higher in cyst fluids from women who developed further cysts during follow-up compared with those in fluid from women who did not. Concentrations of ZnGP in serum from breast can…

Culture of Three-Dimensional Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) Cysts for In Vitro Drug Testing in Polycystic Kidney Disease.

The formation and growth of kidney cysts (fluid-filled structures lined by epithelial cells) is the primary pathological abnormality in polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Multiple molecular pathways are disrupted in kidney epithelial precursor cells, which lead to altered planar cell polarity, increased proliferation, and fluid secretion, which together with extracellular matrix remodelling culminates in the formation and growth of cysts. Three-dimensional (3D) in vitro cyst models serve as suitable preclinical models to screen candidate drugs for PKD. Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) epithelial

Clinical features of cyst infection and hemorrhage in ADPKD: new diagnostic criteria.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cyst infection and cyst hemorrhage are frequent and serious complications of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), often being difficult to diagnose and treat. The first objective of this study is to clarify the clinical features of ADPKD patients with cyst hemorrhage or infection. The second objective is to establish diagnostic criteria for ADPKD patients with cyst infection or cyst hemorrhage. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with definite cyst infection or hemorrhage were enrolled from among the ADPKD patients referred to us between January 2004 and

Aneurysmal bone cysts: MR imaging at 1.5 T.

Two patients with aneurysmal bone cysts of the pelvis were imaged using a 1.5-T magnetic resonance imaging device. Findings included multiple internal septations, cysts with fluid-fluid levels of varying intensity, and an intact rim of low-intensity signal completely surrounding the lesion. These findings allow a specific diagnosis of aneurysmal bone cyst to be made.

[Bone cysts-differential diagnosis and therapeutic approach].

The differential diagnosis of cystic lesions of the skeleton is multifarious. Besides patient age, the localization and radiologic morphology provide important information for a closer differentiation. Juvenile and aneurysmal bone cysts represent two frequent entities in growing patients. The fluid content of the cysts helps in distinguishing between juvenile and aneurysmal bone cysts. Whereas juvenile bone cysts contain clear fluid, the content of aneurysmal bone cysts consists of blood combined with solid tissue. With respect to progression, aneurysmal bone cysts show a higher activity than

Biochemical diagnosis in prenatal uropathy.

Thirty-two fetuses, six with prune-belly syndrome, seven with renal cyst, 19 with obstructive uropathy, underwent intrauterine fluid aspiration during weeks 15-37 of gestation. Fluid samples were analysed for Na, K, creatinine, urea, alpha 1-, and beta 2-microglobulin. Aspirate concentrations of sodium below 130 mmol/L and creatinine above 115 mumol/L indicate an active kidney and exclude a renal cyst. However, aspirates from fetal cysts or fetuses with obstructive uropathy showed analyte concentrations for sodium, potassium, creatinine, and urea corresponding to extracellular fluid (ECF). In

A Gartner duct cyst of the vagina causing dysuria and dyschezia in a Yorkshire terrier.

A 5 year-old, intact female Yorkshire terrier was referred for dysuria and dyschezia. The radiographic and ultrasound examination showed a round shaped mass caudal to the urinary bladder that contained anechoic fluid within the thin walls. During surgery, the cyst was noted to be attached to the outer wall of the vagina, not connected to the vaginal lumen. Cystic fluid was removed and the cystic wall was resected. Then the remaining cystic wall was omentalized to prevent a recurrence. Histological examination confirmed that the cyst was of Wolffian duct origin. In this case, a large Gartner du

In vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in a case of intracranial hydatid cyst.

We performed in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) in a patient who had an intracranial hydatid cyst. Besides lactate, alanine, and acetate, a large resonance for pyruvate was observed. These findings were further confirmed by ex vivo high-resolution NMR spectroscopy of the evacuated cyst fluid, as well as of the fluid aspirated from a cyst in the liver of the same patient. The MRS pattern appeared different from that seen in other cystic lesions of the CNS. In vivo MRS may be used as an adjunct to imaging in the diagnosis of intracranial hydatid cysts. It may also have a role i…

Breast cysts and solid lesions: the role of fine-needle aspiration.

Breast cyst aspiration and fine-needle or needle-core biopsy of palpable and nonpalpable breast masses can be cost-effective and in some situations provide instant resolution of cystic masses. The limitations of the techniques must be known if the benefits are to be exploited. New evaluations on cyst fluid demonstrating proteins (common to breast cancer) have been demonstrated, as well as assessment of electrolyte ratios in fluid. These may give additional information regarding cyst character and potential risks for breast cancer. Physicians involved in the treatment of breast disease must be …

Differentiation between Cystic Pituitary Adenomas and Rathke Cleft Cysts: A Diagnostic Model Using MRI.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cystic pituitary adenomas may mimic Rathke cleft cysts when there is no solid enhancing component found on MR imaging, and preoperative differentiation may enable a more appropriate selection of treatment strategies. We investigated the diagnostic potential of MR imaging features to differentiate cystic pituitary adenomas from Rathke cleft cysts and to develop a diagnostic model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 54 patients with a cystic pituitary adenoma (40 women; mean age, 37.7 years) and 28 with a Rathke cleft cyst (18 women; mean age, 31.5

Pneumonia, pleurisy, mediastinitis, and mediastinal cyst infection secondary to endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is less commonly used in nonmalignant diseases. In particular, its application in mediastinal cystic lesions has been reported less frequently. EBUS-TBNA is a reassuringly safe procedure with an overall complication rate less than 2%, and serious adverse event rate of 0.14% to 0.16%. The most common complications are infections (mediastinal cyst infection most seen). PATIENT CONCERNS: A 28-year-old male presented to the hospital with mediastinal cyst that was incidentally discovered by computed tomograp

Atypical Calf Cyst Treated With Doxycycline Sclerotherapy: A Case Report.

There are many types of cysts in the leg; the most common is a popliteal (Baker's) cyst. This occurs when synovial fluid fills the tissue plane between the medial head of the gastrocnemius and the semimembranosus muscle and is often associated with intraarticular knee pathology. Treatment for various types of cysts includes aspiration with or without fenestration, injections with corticosteroids, dextrose, or various sclerosing agents, and surgical excision. This case describes a 58-yr-old man with a large cyst measuring 14.7 × 2.7 × 3.1 cm in size in the lateral calf, within the lateral gastr

Primary hydatid cyst of the supraspinatus muscle: complete removal of the germinal layer and cytodiagnosis by fine-needle aspiration.

Primary hydatid disease of the skeletal muscle without systemic involvement is rare. The purpose of this report is to document the novel clinical presentation and the interesting facets of fine-needle aspiration in a case of hydatid disease. It was a case of primary hydatid cyst of the left supraspinatus muscle in an Indian woman living in Kuwait, which was clinically diagnosed as a lipoma. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) yielded 2 ml of clear fluid with white particulate material. The cytocentrifuged smears prepared from the aspirated fluid showed many scolices, occasional laminated cyst wall fr

Cyst of accessory lacrimal gland.

When a patient is presented with a subconjunctival cyst, it is not only hard to reveal its true nature clinically but also easy to rupture during excision. We experienced cases with cysts of the accessory lacrimal gland in two patients with subconjunctival cysts. They had lid swelling at initial presentation and underwent surgical excision of subconjunctival cysts located in superior portion of the upper tarsal plate. The lining of these cysts composed of ductal epithelia. Biochemical analyses for serum and cystic fluid were performed in one case, in which was found high Ig A titer in the cyst
