In three adjacent Newfoundland communities comprising some 1500 people, 589 people have been HLA typed. Forty-six of the typed people gave a history of previous clinical tuberculosis which required treatment. Fifty-six percent of the TB patients carried HLA B8 compared with 20% of the remainder of the population. This is a highly significant difference (P less than 0.01). In each community the frequency of B8 as an epidemiological marker correlated with the incidence of tuberculosis. A case of neutropenia in an infant is described, associated with repeated minor infections which responded to treatment with antibiotics. A granulocyte agglutinin was detected in the serum. Following treatment with prednisolone the neutropenia remitted, the antibody disappeared and the infections ceased. Treatment was discontinued after three months and the child remained well five months later. Reports of similar cases are reviewed and the significance of the antibody discussed.

Autologous mixed lymphocyte culture (MLC) reactions were studied utilizing autologous purified B cells and autologous established B lymphoid cell lines as stimulating cells. Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a rare life-threatening adverse drug reaction characterized by a massive destruction of the epidermis. The BioBreeding/Worcester (BB/Wor) rat provides a good model of spontaneous autoimmune diabetes. There are several sublines of the BB/Wor rat. Idiopathic pulmonary haemosiderosis is a rare disease of unknown autoimmune aetiology, mainly affecting children and adolescents. A variety of coexisting autoimmune diseases have been described, including coeliac disease. We describe the case of a man, aged 19 yrs, presenting with a one year history of recurrent haemoptysis. Clinical and immunologic examinations of 55 patients suffering from ulcerous forms of chronic pyoderma have revealed increased counts of the peripheral blood theophylline-sensitive T-lymphocytes before therapy. A decrease of the level of this subpopulation, mainly responsible for the suppressor-cytotoxic function of T-cells, during combined therapy including prospidin is suggestive of an immunocorrecting effect of this drug.
