Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum are important protozoan parasites affecting a wide range of domestic and wild animals. Data on their prevalence and risk factors in local deer in Iraq are lacking. A sero-epidemiological survey was conducted on 168 free-ranging deer across multiple locations in Erbil Governorate, northern Iraq, between 2024 and 2025. Blood samples were collected, and serum was analyzed for antibodies against T. gondii and N. caninum using a competitive ELISA. Demographic, management, and environmental data were recorded for each animal. Associations between seropositivity…

In brief: This study identifies pregnanolone as a previously unrecognized circulating progestogen that emerges during the implantation period following embryonic diapause in roe deer. Abstract: Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) are seasonal animals with fertilization taking place in summer (July/August). Thereafter, the embryo enters a 4- to 5-month period of embryonic diapause. This reproductive strategy, displaying a reduced embryonic developmental velocity at the blastocyst stage, leads to reactivation and implantation in late December-January and parturition in spring (May/June). The endocrin…

The North American deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) exhibits extensive diversity in morphology, physiology, and life history across its broad range. These traits have propelled the deer mouse to model system status across several fields within the biological sciences. Nonetheless, we still lack basic knowledge about some important aspects of this species' biology. For example, limited information about the deer mouse's reproductive physiology remains a significant barrier to developing genetic tools for the species and for advancing our current understanding of how this species has been so …

Surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in white-tailed deer (WTD, Odocoileus virginianus) has revealed its widespread and sustained transmission across North America, with evidence suggesting possible transmission from deer to humans. In the following surveillance studies in other deer species, however, little evidence of infection spread was found, including in sika deer (Cervus nippon) in our previous study. Differences in the structure of the virus entry receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) are known to act as one of the functional barriers to SARS-CoV-2 infection. To investigate the molecul…

Exsheathment is crucial in the transition from free-living to parasitic phase for most strongyle nematode species. A greater understanding of this process could help in developing new parasitic control methods. This study aimed to identify commonalities in response to exsheathment triggers (heat acclimation, CO2 and pH) in a wide range of species (Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus spp., Cooperia spp., Oesophagostomum spp., Chabertia ovina, and members of the subfamily Ostertagiinae) from sheep, cattle and farmed deer. The initial expectation of similarity in pH requirements amongst specie…

Redwater fever is an economically important disease of cattle in the United Kingdom caused by the protozoan parasite Babesia divergens. Control efforts are dependent on accurate local historic knowledge of disease occurrence, together with an accurate appreciation of current underlying risk factors. Importantly, the involvement of red deer in the transmission of this pathogen in the UK remains unclear. We employed a polymerase chain reaction approach combined with DNA sequencing to investigate Babesia infections in livestock and red deer at a UK farm with a history of tick-borne disease. This …

Repetitive behavioral phenotypes are a trait of several neuropsychiatric disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Such behaviors are typified by complex interactions between cognitive and neurobiological processes which most likely contribute to the suboptimal treatment responses often observed. To this end, exploration of the adenosinergic system may be useful, since adenosine-receptor modulation has previously shown promise to restore control over voluntary behavior and improve cognition in patients presenting with motor repetition. Here, we employed the deer mouse (Peromysc…

BACKGROUND: In many mammalian species, once the permanent teeth have erupted, the only change to dentition is a gradual loss of tooth surface/height through wear. The crown of the teeth cannot be repaired once worn. When dental crown tissue has been depleted due to wear, the animal is expected to have a suboptimal body condition. We evaluated the role of tooth wear in causing a reduction of physical condition in adult roe deer females (Capreolus capreolus).
RESULTS: The progressive wearing of the lower cheek teeth was assessed in a Northern Apennines (Italy) population with a new scoring sche…

High-altitude environments are cold and hypoxic, and many high-altitude natives have evolved changes in respiratory physiology that improve O2 uptake in hypoxia as adults. Altricial mammals undergo a dramatic metabolic transition from ectothermy to endothermy in early post-natal life, which may influence the ontogenetic development of respiratory traits at high altitude. We examined the developmental changes in respiratory and haematological traits in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) native to high altitude, comparing the respiratory responses to progressive hypoxia between highland and lowl…

AIM: We examined the effects of chronic hypoxia on diaphragm function in high- and low-altitude populations of Peromyscus mice.
METHODS: Deer mice (P. maniculatus) native to high altitude and congeneric mice native to low altitude (P. leucopus) were born and raised in captivity to adulthood and were acclimated to normoxia or hypobaric hypoxia (12 or 9 kPa, simulating hypoxia at 4300 and 7000 m) for 6-8 weeks. We then measured indices of mitochondrial respiration capacity, force production, and fatigue resistance in the diaphragm.
RESULTS: Mitochondrial respiratory capacities (assessed using …

This study represents the initial part of an investigation into the potential for non-native, wild, free-living muntjac deer (Muntiacus reevesi) to carry viruses that could be a threat to livestock. A degenerate PCR assay was used to screen a range of tissues from muntjac deer culled in Northern Ireland for the presence of herpesviral nucleic acids. This was followed by sequencing of PCR amplicons and phylogenetic analysis. We report the detection of a novel gammaherpesvirus most closely related to a type 2 ruminant rhadinovirus from mule deer. It remains to be determined if this new virus is …

How skeletal elements scale to size is a fundamental question in biology. While the external shape of long bones was intensively studied, an … lected in zeugopodial bones. Finally, the long-legged Elk (Alces) and the short-legged dwarf Cretan deer (Candiacervus) featured rather thin and thick cortices, respectively, suggesting that the acquisition of a different limb proportion is accompanied by a modification of the relative mid-diaphyseal cortical thickness.

Roof rats (Rattus rattus) and deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) are occasional pests of nut and tree fruit orchards throughout California and in many other parts of the USA and beyond. In general, the most practical and cost-effective control method for rodents in many agricultural environments is the use of rodenticides (toxic baits), but little or no information exists on the efficacy of current rodenticides in controlling roof rats and deer mice in orchards. Therefore, our goals were to develop an index of rodent activity to monitor efficacy of rodenticides and to subsequently test the eff…

We report the first description of Bartonella prevalence and genetic diversity in 64 Honshu sika deer (Cervus nippon centralis) and 18 Yezo sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis) in Japan. Overall, Bartonella bacteremia prevalence was 41.5% (34/82). The prevalence in wild deer parasitized with ticks and deer keds was 61.8% (34/55), whereas no isolates were detected in captive deer (0/27) free of ectoparasites. The isolates belonged to 11 genogroups based on a combination of the gltA and rpoB gene sequences. Phylogenetic analysis of concatenated sequences of the ftsZ, gltA, ribC, and rpoB genes of…

The morphology, distribution and relative frequencies of endocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract of the barking deer (Muntiacus muntjak) were investigated. The immunohistochemical method employed used seven types of antisera against chromogranin, serotonin, gastrin, cholecystokinin, somatostatin, glucagon and insulin. Chromogranin and serotonin immunoreactive (IR) cells were found throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Conversely, gastrin-IR cells were only found in the oxyntic gland, pyloric gland and duodenum, while cholecystokinin-IR and somatostatin-IR cells were detected in the oxyn…

The deer ked, Lipoptena cervi L. (Diptera: Hippoboscidae), is an ectoparasitic fly that spread to Finland in the early 1960s from the southeast across the Soviet border. It is currently a common parasite of the moose, Alces alces (Artiodactyla: Cervidae), in the southern part of the country and its area of distribution is gradually spreading to Finnish Lapland, where it will come into contact with another potential cervid host, the semi-domesticated reindeer, Rangifer tarandus tarandus. The aim of this study was to determine the intensity of deer ked parasitism on the moose in eastern Finland.…

Sensitivities of a wildlife species, deer mice, to oxidants were evaluated. A single dose (1589 mg/kg body weight by intraperitoneal injection) of carbon tetrachloride, a typical hepatotoxicant, caused changes in GCL activity and GSH content in multiple organs of deer mice. Hepatic GCL activity and GSH content were depleted substantially (P<0.01), renal GCL activity increased (P<0.05). Blood, brain and heart GCL activities increased (P<0.05), whereas GSH contents decreased significantly. Deer mice were exposed to Pb, or Pb together with Cu and Zn via drinking water for 4 weeks. GCL activities …
