Thyroid tissue from two patients with Batten-Spielmeyer-Vogt disease (BSV) was studied for peroxidase enzyme activity and for morphological abnormalities by light and electron microscopy. Diagnosis was confirmed by the demonstration of intracytoplasmic material identical to that described in other reported cases of BSV. There was a substantial decrease in peroxidase activity in the thyroid tissue from both patients. An abnormally low level of peroxidase activity had previously been demonstrated in the white blood cells of these patients. Thyroid biopsy offers obvious advantages over brain biop

The clinical and laboratory findings are presented of three patients (two affected sisters and their male cousin) with myophosphorylase deficiency in two interrelated families. Nine unaffected relatives were also investigated. Although the three patients demonstrated the characteristic features of the disease, their unaffected relatives showed no clear evidence of a heterozygous state. The genetic findings support the hypothesis that the disease is inherited as a rare autosomal recessive. A possible sex-limited mode of inheritance is discussed.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an intractable neurodegenerative disorder caused by mutant Huntingtin (HTT) proteins that adversely affect various biomolecules and genes. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), which are functional small non-coding RNAs, are also affected by mutant HTT proteins. Here, we show amelioration in motor function and lifespan of HD-model mice, R6/2 mice, by supplying miR-132 to HD brains using a recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) miRNA expression system. miR-132 is an miRNA related to neuronal maturation and function, but the level of miR-132 in the brain of R6/2 mice was significan

Barlow's disease and fibroelastic deficiency are the two dominant forms of degenerative mitral valve disease and have unique differentiating characteristics on clinical and echocardiographic assessment. Preoperative differentiation of patients by both cardiologists and surgeons is important because the techniques, surgical skill, and expertise required to achieve a repair vary among these etiological subsets. Barlow's patients often have multiple complex lesions, thus high rates of repair are only likely to be achieved by a reference mitral valve repair surgeon. In contrast, many forms of fibr

Measures of manganese (Mn) status in cattle vary among studies, and no single criterion accurately predicts or diagnoses Mn deficiency and pathologic outcomes. Mn deficiency causes congenital joint laxity and dwarfism (CJLD) when total dietary intake is <20 ppm Mn dry matter (DM) for most of the pregnancy. However, the recommended dietary intake of 40 ppm DM can also result in clinical Mn deficiency. Some studies have found that CJLD occurs in calves from cows fed red clover or silage but not in calves from cows fed hay. The concentration of Mn in the liver is the best indicator of Mn status i

Encephalitis lethargica (EL) was an epidemic that spread throughout Europe and North America during the 1920s. Although it could affect both children and adults alike, there were a strange series of chronic symptoms that exclusively affected its younger victims: behavioural disorders which could include criminal propensities. In Britain, which had passed the Mental Deficiency Act in 1913, the concept of mental deficiency was well understood when EL appeared. However, EL defied some of the basic precepts of mental deficiency to such an extent that amendments were made to the Mental Deficiency A

Tarui disease is a rare, genetically determined glycogen storage myopathy caused by the total lack of phosphofructokinase (PFK) enzymatic activity in the muscles and partially deficient enzymatic activity in the erythrocytes. We describe a patient with this disorder, who presented with exercise intolerance, painful cramps, elevation of muscle enzyme levels in the serum, compensated hemolysis with paradoxically elevated hemoglobin levels and gout with overproduction of uric acid. This patient had a partial hepatic uridine diphosphoglucuronate-glucuronyltransferase deficiency (Gilbert's syndrome

Iron deficiency (ID) has emerged as a pivotal yet underrecognized factor in the pathogenesis of immune-mediated inflammatory skin diseases (IMISDs) such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and hidradenitis suppurativa. Beyond its classical role in erythropoiesis, iron acts as a key modulator of immune cell activity, redox balance, and overall metabolic homeostasis. This review synthesises the latest evidence on the intricate relationship between systemic inflammation, disturbances of iron metabolism, and immunometabolic imbalances that underline the pathogenesis of IMISDs. Findings indicate that

Hypovitaminosis D (HD) is a relevant deficit. This vitamin has implications in bone health, as well as immunological and metabolic functions, and in the pathophysiology of cancer. Pediatric oncology patients are at increased risk for this deficiency. A cross-sectional, retrospective study was conducted to determine the prevalence of HD in pediatric oncology patients in a high-complexity hospital between January 2019 and August 2023. Eighty-nine patients were included. The overall median vitamin D levels were 18.3 ng/mL (IQR: 11.1-26.7). The prevalence of HD was 52.8% (95%CI: 41.9-63.5). These

Iron deficiency (ID) in patients with heart failure (HF) is a factor for unfavorable course and prognosis of the disease. The significance of ID in the diagnosis and treatment of HF has previously been demonstrated by multiple studies and meta-analyses. Therapy for ID in patients with HF is one of the most relevant and discussed issues. The use of intravenous iron medicinal products for the treatment of ID is currently being actively studied in patients of various categories; attempts are being made to specify the indications for use to produce the greatest effect on the prognosis and quality
