Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome and its complications: A report of two cases and literature review.

Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome (HWWS) is a rare congenital malformation characterized by uterus didelphys, unilateral blind hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis. The obstructed vagina affects menstrual flow, leading to related clinical symptoms after menarche. However, the age of onset, initial symptoms, and clinical complications differ among patients owing to the different types of vaginal septum. Herein, we report 2 cases. The first case is of a 20-year-old woman who presented with fever; she was diagnosed with vaginitis and pelvic inflammation due to the vaginal septum with ostiol

The spectrum of imaging appearances of müllerian duct anomalies: focus on MR imaging.

Müllerian duct anomalies (MDAs) are the result of incomplete development, vertical or lateral fusion, or absorption of the müllerian ducts. The range of anomalies includes uterovaginal agenesis or hypoplasia, unicornuate uterus, uterus didelphys, bicornuate uterus, septate uterus, and arcuate uterus. Correct diagnosis and classification of these anomalies are essential because pregnancy outcomes and treatment options vary between the types of anomaly. Furthermore, early identification of MDAs helps to avoid prolonged symptomatic periods and the complications that may subsequently arise, such a

Hemivaginal septum resection in a patient with a rare variant of Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome.

Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome is characterized by a triad of uterine didelphys, obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis. The syndrome should be suspected in any young woman with abdominal pain or cyclic dysmenorrhea, and radiologic evidence of müllerian duct and renal anomalies. Herein is presented the case of a 25-year-old woman with a rare variant of Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome, characterized by an anomalous connection between the 2 endocervical canals, who underwent hemivaginal septum resection to relieve progressively worsening dysmenorrhea. The right hemivaginal se

Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich Syndrome Complicated with Pyocolpos: An Unusual Cause of Postabortal Sepsis.

Obstructive mullerian anomalies give rise to a spectrum of clinical presentations and are uncommon in routine gynecologic practice. The patient usually becomes symptomatic in early reproductive years. Recurrent pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, enlarging abdominopelvic mass, and abnormal vaginal discharge are the common presenting symptoms. We describe a rare case of a mullerian anomaly getting diagnosed 13 years after attaining menarche during the evaluation of postabortal sepsis. Patient presented 2 weeks following evacuation carried out for missed abortion, with acute abdominal pain, fever and fou

Ultrasound evaluation of female genital tract anomalies: a review of 64 cases.

Sixty-four patients with an ultrasound diagnosis of an anomaly of the female genital tract were studied retrospectively to determine the accuracy and usefulness of sonographic examination of these anomalies in the pregnant (64%) and the nonpregnant (36%) patient. Ultrasound diagnoses in 46 patients with follow-up included: (1) bicornuate/septate uterus in 21 cases, (2) uterus didelphys in 18 cases, (3) cervical and vaginal atresia in three cases, (4) obstructed lower but normal upper genital tract in two cases, and (5) abnormal-appearing uterus in two cases. Ultrasound diagnosis was compared w

Arcuate and bicornuate uterine anomalies and infertility.

Twenty-three patients presenting with infertility were found to have uterine anomalies. Eighteen had primary infertility. Six (86%) of seven patients with arcuate uterus achieved a term pregnancy. Five patients of these seven had primary infertility. Of the 13 patients with bicornuate uterus, 6 subsequently underwent a metroplasty and 4 (67%) of these latter patients achieved a term pregnancy. Of the remaining seven patients with bicornuate uterus, one achieved pregnancy during investigations, one refused surgery, and five were not operated upon because of uncorrected nonuterine factors. Maternal and fetal outcomes in women with uterine congenital abnormalities: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Congenital uterine anomalies (CUA) are structural abnormalities resulting from disrupted Müllerian duct development and have been associated with adverse reproductive and obstetric outcomes. However, the magnitude of these risks and variation across anomaly subtypes remain incompletely defined. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between CUA and adverse maternal and fetal outcomes and to examine subtype-specific risk patterns using contemporary evidence. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies identified from MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Cochran

Bobcats (Lynx rufus) are natural definitive host of Besnoitia darlingi.

Bovine besnoitiosis, caused by Besnoitia besnoiti, is an economically important disease of cattle in many countries but its transmission remains a mystery. Wild felids are suspected to be its definitive hosts. The domestic cat (Felis catus) is known experimental definitive host for Besnoitia species of rodents. Here, we report for Besnoitia darlingi the first identification of a natural definitive host, the bobcat (Lynx rufus). Oocysts resembling Toxoplasma gondii (unsporulated; 10.9±0.8×12.1±0.2μm; n=5) were detected microscopically in the feces of two of 25 free ranging wild bobcats from Mis

Opossums and Cat Fleas: New Insights in the Ecology of Murine Typhus in Galveston, Texas.

Murine typhus is an acute undifferentiated febrile illness caused by Rickettsia typhi The classic reservoir (Rattus spp.) and flea vector (Xenopsylla cheopis) were once culprits of murine typhus in the United States. Vector and rodent control efforts have drastically decreased the prevalence of disease, except in a few endemic foci where opossums and cat fleas play a role in transmission. Since 2012, there has been a reemergence of murine typhus in Galveston, TX. We hypothesize that opossums and cat fleas are involved in the transmission of R. typhi in Galveston. To explore this, we sought to

PO41, a snake venom metalloproteinase inhibitor isolated from Philander opossum serum.

PO41 was isolated from Philander opossum serum by DEAE-Sephacel, Phenyl Superose and Superdex 200 chromatographies and showed a molecular mass of 41,330 Da by MALDI-TOF MS. Molecular masses of 81.5 and 84.5 kDa were obtained by size exclusion chromatography and dynamic laser light scattering, respectively, suggesting that PO41 is dimeric. Its isoelectric point was estimated to be lower than 3.5. PO41 presented similar amino terminal sequence to those of DM40 and DM43, two antihaemorrhagins previously isolated from Didelphis marsupialis serum and was recognized by polyclonal antibodies raised a…
