Lung magnetic resonance imaging with diffusion weighted imaging provides regional structural as well as functional information without radiation exposure in primary antibody deficiencies.

PURPOSE: Primary antibody deficiency patients suffer from infectious and non-infectious pulmonary complications leading over time to chronic lung disease. The complexity of this pulmonary involvement poses significant challenge in differential diagnosis in patients with long life disease and increased radio sensitivity. We planned to verify the utility of chest Magnetic Resolution Imaging with Diffusion-Weighted Imaging as a radiation free technique. METHODS: Prospective evaluation of 18 patients with Common Variable Immunodeficiency and X-linked Agammaglobulinemia. On the same day, patients

Diffuse cardiac fibrosis quantification in early systemic sclerosis by magnetic resonance imaging and correlation with skin fibrosis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the utility of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) T1 mapping in early systemic sclerosis (SSc) and its association with skin score. METHODS: Twenty-four consecutive patients with early SSc referred for cardiovascular evaluation and 12 controls without SSc were evaluated. All patients underwent cine, T1 mapping, and late gadolinium enhanced (LGE) CMR imaging. T1 mapping indices were compared between SSc patients and controls (extracellular volume fraction [ECV], gadolinium partition coefficient [λ], pre-contrast T1, and post-contrast T1). The association between T1 mapping p

A novel magnetic resonance imaging segmentation technique for determining diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma tumor volume.

OBJECTIVE Accurately determining diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) tumor volume is clinically important. The aims of the current study were to 1) measure DIPG volumes using methods that require different degrees of subjective judgment; and 2) evaluate interobserver agreement of measurements made using these methods. METHODS Eight patients from a Phase I clinical trial testing convection-enhanced delivery (CED) of a therapeutic antibody were included in the study. Pre-CED, post-radiation therapy axial T2-weighted images were analyzed using 2 methods requiring high degrees of subjective ju

Diffuse magnetic resonance imaging white-matter changes in a 15-year-old boy with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy.

We report a 15-year-old boy who presented with recurrent headaches associated with numbness, confusion, and speech difficulty. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed diffuse bilateral white-matter hyperintensity on fluid-attenuated inversion-recovery and T2-weighted images in the internal capsule, periventricular and subcortical white matter, base of the pons, and middle cerebellar peduncles. Lesions were isointense on T1-weighted images and nonenhancing. Muscle biopsy showed changes consistent with a mitochondrial myopathy. Mitochondrial respiratory chain enzyme activity analysis rev

Diffuse leptomeningeal enhancement, "ivy sign," in magnetic resonance images of moyamoya disease in childhood: case report.

We report three cases of children with moyamoya disease who revealed prominent leptomeningeal enhancement on postcontrast magnetic resonance (MR) images. Two of the children underwent bilateral extracranial-intracranial bypass operations because of ischemic symptoms. During the operations, a profuse pial arterial network was observed, which was considered to be the origin of the enhancement. The ischemic episodes disappeared after the operations, and the follow-up MR images showed marked reduction of the leptomeningeal enhancement. One of the three patients had an extracranial-intracranial byp

Predicting outcome in childhood diffuse midline gliomas using magnetic resonance imaging based texture analysis.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse midline gliomas (DMG) are aggressive brain tumours, previously known as diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPG), with 10% overall survival (OS) at 18 months. Predicting OS will help refine treatment strategy in this patient group. MRI based texture analysis (MRTA) is novel image analysis technique that provides objective information about spatial arrangement of MRI signal intensity (heterogeneity) and has potential to be imaging biomarker. OBJECTIVES: To investigate MRTA in predicting OS in childhood DMG. METHODS: Retrospective study of patients diagnosed with DMG, based

Prospective cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging in adults with Alström syndrome: silent progression of diffuse interstitial fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Alström syndrome (ALMS) is a rare ciliopathy characterised by early onset insulin resistance, obesity, and dyslipidaemia and is a model for diseases that have huge social, health and economic impact. Cardiomyopathy develops in the majority, with high rates of morbidity and mortality, the definitive features of which are coarse replacement fibrosis and diffuse myocardial fibrosis (DIF). The pathogenesis of heart failure is thought to involve fibroblast accumulation and expansion of the extracellular matrix with excess protein deposition, leading to distorted organ architecture and i

Symptoms of degeneration of the pyramidal tracts in conventional magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging in a young woman with primary lateral sclerosis.

Primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) is one of the forms of motor neuron disease (MND), affecting only upper motor neurons. The diagnosis of PLS should be made on different diagnostic criteria, for example, Pringle or Gordon, but it is usually a diagnosis of exclusion. There are no characteristic findings in standard laboratory and electrophysiological assessment. We present details of a 31-year-old woman who had suffered from progressive paraparesis with right-side predominance. Conventional MRI of brain and spinal cord and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies showed Hyperintense lesions in the

Development and validation of cardiac diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging for the diagnosis of myocardial injury in small animal models.

Cardiac diffusion weighted-magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) has slowly developed due to its technical difficulties. However, this limitation could be overcome by advanced techniques, including a stimulated echo technique and a gradient moment nulling technique. This study aimed to develop and validate a high-order DWI sequence, using echo-planar imaging (EPI) and second-order motion-compensated (M012) diffusion gradient applied to cardiac imaging in small-sized animals with fast heart and respiratory rates, and to investigate the feasibility of cardiac DWI, diagnosing acute myocardial injury i

Quantitative perfusion and water transport time model from multi b-value diffusion magnetic resonance imaging validated against neutron capture microspheres.

PURPOSE: Quantification of perfusion in ml/100 g/min, rather than comparing relative values side-to-side, is critical at the clinical and research levels for large longitudinal and multi-center trials. Intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) is a non-contrast magnetic resonance imaging diffusion-based scan that uses a multitude of b-values to measure various speeds of molecular perfusion and diffusion, sidestepping inaccuracy of arterial input functions or bolus kinetics. Questions remain as to the original of the signal and whether IVIM returns quantitative and accurate perfusion in a pathology s
