A dyadic perspective on parent and adolescent social media use: the roles of communication, joint technology use, and validation motives in problematic social media use.

BACKGROUND: Parents significantly influence adolescent behavior, yet research often overlooks dyadic interactions in shaping media use. Understanding how family members’ technology habits and communication relate to problematic media use (PMU) is critical for developing effective interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study used actor–partner interdependence modeling (APIM) to examine associations among time on social media, PMU, and three mediators (open communication, joint technology use, and validation motives) within parent–adolescent dyads. METHODS: Participants were 85 parent–adolescent dyads (

Latent profile analysis of depressive symptoms and its associations with problematic social media use and demographic characteristics among Chinese college students.

This study gave the Depression Scale and the Problematic Social Media Use Scale to 3,540 college students in order to examine the categorical distribution of depression levels among them as well as the predictive roles of problematic social media use (PSMU) and demographic characteristics. According to the findings, college students' depression levels fall into three latent categories: low, moderate, and high. Higher PSMU levels were linked to higher depression levels. Additionally, demographic factors including male, rural background, and grade also exerted significant influences on depressio

How do physical activity and social media use predict the study wellbeing profile of comprehensive school students?

Students' study wellbeing plays a crucial role in protecting against social and academic challenges, both within and outside school. However, little is known about how the extent of physical activity and social media use affects study wellbeing. To explore this, we identified profiles of study engagement and burnout among Finnish primary school students (n = 345, age 11), and lower secondary school students (n = 447, age 14). Using latent profile analysis, we identified five study wellbeing profiles: three showing a negative association between engagement and burnout-engaged, burned-out, and a

Promoting a personalized vaccine information website through social media and local outreach: a dissemination and implementation study.

Vaccine hesitancy is a major public health problem, with social media playing a crucial role in the spread of reliable vaccine information, as well as misinformation and disinformation. LetsTalkShots is a website that offers tailored, evidence-based vaccine information including personal narratives, credible sources, and animation. We compared the cost of promoting LetsTalkShots through outreach efforts of five local public health departments versus a paid social media campaign targeting the same five communities. Social media ads drove traffic at a low cost per click, though local outreach ef

On losing the "dispensable" sense: TikTok imitation publics and COVID-19 smell loss challenges.

The enduring effects of COVID-19 have called into question many of the assumptions upon which media and cultural studies rest, including a fundamental mode of perception: the sense of smell. In dialog with the field of sensory studies, this paper traces digital smell loss (anosmia) communities from pre-pandemic Facebook groups to mid-pandemic TikTok challenges. This article considers digital smell loss communities on TikTok as imitation publics characterized by repetition. Via replicable TikTok challenges, digital smell-loss communities reckoned with the unmooring effects of a seemingly mild s

Morphologic features of prostate cancer-encased native vessels: An image analysis study.

BACKGROUND: Vasculature plays a crucial role in the progression of prostate cancer (PC). Changes to the prostatic native vessels have not been studied since 2000 when Garcia et al. demonstrated marked media hypercellularity and increased artery thickness in prostatic native arteries within PC. We aim to further evaluate and characterize prostatic native vessels with a more accurate method with the use of virtual slides and digital analysis. DESIGN: Pathologist-annotated whole-mount digital slides from 96 entirely submitted prostatectomies were annotated for PC (color-coded by Gleason) using O

Going digital: how technology use may influence human brains and behavior
.

The digital revolution has changed, and continues to change, our world and our lives. Currently, major aspects of our lives have moved online due to the coronavirus pandemic, and social distancing has necessitated virtual togetherness. In a synopsis of 10 articles we present ample evidence that the use of digital technology may influence human brains and behavior in both negative and positive ways. For instance, brain imaging techniques show concrete morphological alterations in early childhood and during adolescence that are associated with intensive digital media use. Technology use apparent…

A multimodal artificial intelligence framework for digital forensics.

Digital forensics plays a key role in investigating different types of crimes. It involves analyzing evidence from electronic devices, social media, and system logs. However, investigators face major challenges due to the large size of digital data. Information from networks, smartphones, and online platforms is often too complex to analyze within a limited time. The large size of digital evidence and the pressure of a strict timeline for case investigation force the investigator to do data reduction and selective analysis. It is also difficult for the investigator to correlate the various dig

What Moves Parents to Recommend Digital Mental Health Tools for Youth? Behavioral Insights and Implications.

In this study we aimed to examine behavioral determinants influencing parents' willingness to recommend digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) to their youth, guided by the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behavior (COM-B) model. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 22 parents of adolescents aged 13-19 years with mental health concerns. Interview transcripts were thematically analyzed using a hybrid inductive-deductive approach. Findings were mapped onto COM-B domains. Capability barriers included low awareness, uncertainty about SSIs, and difficulty navigating digital tools. O

Absence of digital intervention: exploring the motivations behind self-harm adolescents' avoidance of psychological support techniques.

BACKGROUND: From the perspective of behavioural psychology and adolescent psychopathology, non-suicidal self-harm (NSSI) among adolescents is a multidetermined behaviour shaped by biological, psychological and social factors. Digital mental health interventions are vital for adolescent self-harm support, yet their acceptance among self-harming adolescents is low with significant avoidance tendencies. Existing research focuses on technical attributes of these tools but rarely explores the psychological motivations and contextual factors driving avoidance in this group, and few studies interpret
