Persistent hyperbilirubinemia and icterus are described in a healthy 4-year-old Thoroughbred horse. Hyperbilirubinemia was not related to food intake and was not associated with evidence of increased hemolysis or with acquired hepatic disease. The hyperbilirubinemia was thought to be a result of inappropriate conjugation of bilirubin rather than any abnormality in bilirubin uptake or excretion. The bilirubinemia in this horse appears most similar to a human syndrome, caused by a familial deficiency of bilirubin-uridine diphosphate glucuronyl transferase.

The action of fluoride ions on G proteins as well as on various ATPases and phosphatases, is related to their complexation with traces of aluminium or beryllium. These fluorometallic complexes act as analogs of phosphate: they bind with high affinity, but reversibly, in phosphate sites or, concomitantly with nucleoside-diphosphate, in nucleoside-triphosphate sites. The beryllofluoride complexes are strictly tetrahedral; they cannot take on the pentavalent conformation adopted by phosphate in transition states hence they interfere with phospho-transfer reaction mechanisms.

A number of biochemical parameters have been determined which characterized the state of CNS and the structure of cell membranes in antenatally alcoholized animals. As compared with the control group the alcoholized animals had a significantly increased level of phosphatidyl inositol diphosphate in brain phospholipid fractions, while content of serotonin was reduced in their brain and increased in blood plasma; content of phosphatidyl serine and the cholesterol/phospholipids ratio were reduced in brain.

Platelets of migraine patients showed abnormal behavior such as hyperaggregability and reduced monoamine oxidase activity (MAO). We measured the MAO activity, serotonin (5-HT) content and release, adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-induced aggregation, and the prostacyclin (PGI2) antiaggregatory effect using the same sample of platelets from migraine patients to find out if these characteristics are intercorrelated. A significant correlation between MAO activity and sensitivity to PGI2 was found.

OBJECTIVE: This study employs the Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to investigate the causal relationships among immune cells, cluster headache (CH), and potential mediation by serum metabolites.
METHODS: Using genome-wide association study (GWAS) data, MR analyses were conducted on 731 immune cell phenotypes, 1400 serum metabolites, and CH. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was employed as the primary analytical approach, supplemented by MR-Egger and weighted median analyses. Stability of results was assessed using Cochran's Q and other statistical tests.

We report five mutations, three of them novel, responsible for maple syrup urine disease in four unrelated Cypriot families. OBJECTIVES: To elucidate the mechanism by which aminoguanidine (AG) protects against cyclophosphamide (CP)-induced hemorrhagic cystitis.
METHODS: Hemorrhagic cystitis was induced in the rats by administration of a single injection of CP at a dose of 150 mg/kg body weight intraperitoneally. For the AG pretreatment studies, the rats were injected intraperitoneally with AG at a dose of 200 mg/kg body weight 1 hour before administration of CP. The control rats received AG or saline alone. All the rats were killed 16 hours after the administration of CP or saline.

To understand the molecular mechanisms underlying the developmental processes of the cerebral cortex, we screened genes whose mRNA expression was up-regulated in neonatal in the rat cortex to a greater extent than in adult by differential display and obtained five genes. Cerebral ischemia, induced in rats by occlusion of the middle cerebral artery resulted in infarcts affecting the basal ganglia and adjacent frontoparietal cortex.
