Collective Self-Esteem and Depressive Symptomatology in Lesbians and Gay Men: A Moderated Mediation Model of Self-Stigma and Psychological Abuse.

The context of stigma, in which lesbians and gay men live in most countries, exposes them to possible discrimination and promotes the internalization of negative attitudes about their own sexual orientation, which may have negative consequences for their mental health. Their psychological distress may increase when lesbians and gay men are exposed to other sources of stress such as intimate partner violence. With the aim of analyzing the relationship between these variables, this study intends to present a moderated mediation model that proposes: (a) self-stigma mediates the relationship betwe

Sensorimotor Induction of Auditory Misattribution in Early Psychosis.

Dysfunction of sensorimotor predictive processing is thought to underlie abnormalities in self-monitoring producing passivity symptoms in psychosis. Experimentally induced sensorimotor conflict can produce a failure in bodily self-monitoring (presence hallucination [PH]), yet it is unclear how this is related to auditory self-monitoring and psychosis symptoms. Here we show that the induction of sensorimotor conflict in early psychosis patients induces PH and impacts auditory-verbal self-monitoring. Participants manipulated a haptic robotic system inducing a bodily sensorimotor conflict. In exp

The role of experience-based perceptual learning in the face inversion effect.

Perceptual learning of the type we consider here is a consequence of experience with a class of stimuli. It amounts to an enhanced ability to discriminate between stimuli. We argue that it contributes to the ability to distinguish between faces and recognize individuals, and in particular contributes to the face inversion effect (better recognition performance for upright vs inverted faces). Previously, we have shown that experience with a prototype defined category of checkerboards leads to perceptual learning, that this produces an inversion effect, and that this effect can be disrupted by A

Individual differences in high-level biological motion tasks correlate with autistic traits.

Human actions are rich in social cues and play an essential role in interacting with the social environment. Hence, the perception of biological motion (i.e., movement elicited by humans and other animals) is considered to be an important gauge of a person's social cognition capacities. It has been well-documented that Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is associated with difficulties in social interactions. In the present study, we examined whether individual differences in biological motion perception relate to the degree of autistic traits among people in the typically-developing population. We

Holistic processing impairment can be restricted to faces in acquired prosopagnosia: evidence from the global/local Navon effect.

Previous studies have shown that acquired prosopagnosia is characterized by impairment at holistic/configural processing. However, this view is essentially supported by studies performed with patients whose face recognition difficulties are part of a more general visual (integrative) agnosia. Here, we tested the patient PS, a case of acquired prosopagnosia whose face-specific recognition difficulties have been related to the inability to process individual faces holistically (absence of inversion, composite, and whole-part effects with faces). Here, we show that in contrast to this impairment,

Conditioned reinforcement value and resistance to change.

Three experiments examined the effects of conditioned reinforcement value and primary reinforcement rate on resistance to change using a multiple schedule of observing-response procedures with pigeons. In the absence of observing responses in both components, unsignaled periods of variable-interval (VI) schedule food reinforcement alternated with extinction. Observing responses in both components intermittently produced 15 s of a stimulus associated with the VI schedule (i.e., S+). In the first experiment, a lower-valued conditioned reinforcer and a higher rate of primary reinforcement were ar

Training generalized receptive prepositions in retarded children.

THREE RETARDED CHILDREN WERE TRAINED, USING PROMPTING AND REINFORCEMENT PROCEDURES, TO RESPOND CORRECTLY TO THREE CATEGORIES OF PREPOSITIONAL REQUESTS: "put the-next to the-", "put the-under the-", and "put the-on top of the-". Training sessions were alternated with probe sessions throughout the study. During training, a child was trained to respond to one request (e.g., "put the doll next to the cup"); during probing, the child was tested for generalization of this training to untrained requests. Responses to untrained requests were never prompted nor reinforced. The results showed that, as r

Psychological morbidity as a moderator of intention to quit smoking: a study of smokers and former smokers.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze psychological morbidity as a moderator of the relationship between smoking representations and quality of life in smokers and former smokers, as well as to determine which psychological variables discriminate between smokers with and without the intention to quit smoking. METHODS: This was a quantitative, correlational cross-sectional study involving a convenience sample of 224 smokers and 169 former smokers. RESULTS: In smokers and former smokers, psychological morbidity had a moderating effect on the relationship between mental/physical quality of life and smoking rep

Differentiating psychological characteristics of patients with sleep apnea and narcolepsy.

Fifty male subjects were group-matched for age and socioeconomic status. Twenty of the subjects were diagnosed as having sleep apnea and 20 were diagnosed as having narcolepsy on the basis of sleep studies. The remaining 10 subjects served as normal controls. Differences among the groups were evaluated on the bases of two psychological instruments designed to assess personality characteristics and mood states. The findings suggest that narcoleptics and apneics both present discriminatively different psychological profiles than do normals. Moreover, personality characteristics of these two grou

Psychological trauma, somatization, dissociation, and psychiatric comorbidities in patients with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures compared with those in patients with intractable partial epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare patients with intractable epilepsy with patients with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) on the presence of psychological traumas, clinical factors, and psychological measures of somatization and dissociation. BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported a high prevalence of psychological trauma in patients with PNES, while less have examined the prevalence of psychological trauma in patients with epilepsy and compared both groups. Reports have been somewhat divergent with some describing significantly higher prevalence in physical abus

Perceived microaggressions and migrant health in Germany: the role of psychological capital.

BACKGROUND: Repeated exposure to microaggressions, subtle and often unintentional forms of discrimination, can undermine the well-being of migrant populations. This study examines the role of psychological capital, comprising hope, self-efficacy, resilience, and optimism, in mediating and moderating the association between perceived microaggressions and health outcomes among migrants in Germany. METHODS: In the cross-sectional study, a total of 858 participants with a migration background residing across different federal states in Germany completed a questionnaire assessing sociodemographic f

fMRI activity patterns in human LOC carry information about object exemplars within category.

Abstract The lateral occipital complex (LOC) is a set of areas in the human occipito-temporal cortex responding to objects as opposed to low-level control stimuli. Conventional functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) analysis methods based on regional averages could not detect signals discriminative of different types of objects in this region. Here, we examined fMRI signals using multivariate pattern recognition (support vector classification) to systematically explore the nature of object-related information available in fine-grained activity patterns in the LOC. Distributed fMRI signal

Risk and protective factors for psychological distress, anxiety, depression, and PTSD in unaccompanied minor migrants in Spain.

Unaccompanied minor migrants represent a rapidly growing and vulnerable population in Southern Europe, yet no comprehensive quantitative data have examined the multiple factors shaping their mental health outcomes in Spain. This study aimed to identify risk and protective factors linked to the migration process that are associated with psychological distress (K10), anxiety (GAD-7), depression (CIDI), and PTSD (PCL-5) among unaccompanied minor migrants in Spain. We examined 230 male participants (M age = 16.79, SD = 0.45). Data were collected through face-to-face, culturally adapted structured

Discriminability of multiple cutaneous and proprioceptive hand percepts evoked by intraneural stimulation with Utah slanted electrode arrays in human amputees.

BACKGROUND: Electrical stimulation of residual afferent nerve fibers can evoke sensations from a missing limb after amputation, and bionic arms endowed with artificial sensory feedback have been shown to confer functional and psychological benefits. Here we explore the extent to which artificial sensations can be discriminated based on location, quality, and intensity. METHODS: We implanted Utah Slanted Electrode Arrays (USEAs) in the arm nerves of three transradial amputees and delivered electrical stimulation via different electrodes and frequencies to produce sensations on the missing hand

Psychosocial factors predicting severity of depression among treatment-seeking HIV/AIDS patients: A multi-site Nigerian study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Depression as major psychological sequelea of the HIV/AIDS infection has continued to attract investigation. With few studies in Nigeria, it is unclear whether levels of perceived stigma, sexual risk behaviors, and anticipated discrimination are differentially associated with severity of depression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study using a multivariate design investigated the role of stigma, anticipated discrimination, self-esteem, HIV-related factors (e.g., drug use combination, knowledge of duration of HIV diagnosis) and socio demographic factors (e.g., mu

Risk factors of homelessness among sexual and gender minorities in the Southeastern U.S.

Homelessness disproportionately impacts sexual and gender minority (SGM) people, however, few studies have examined factors that predict homelessness among SGM adults. The present secondary analysis of a survey of SGM adults living in the Southeastern U.S. in 2016 (N = 427) assessed factors associated with report of past or current homelessness, which was endorsed by 17% of participants. Congruent with our hypotheses, past socioeconomic status (SES), current SES, mental health, and race were all significant predictors and accounted for 50.5% of variance in homelessness in this population.
