Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) are rare complications of pregnancy, and even more rare are cases with both complications occurring concomitantly. A 33-year-old woman developed a bullous PG precursing a chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) complicated by life-threatening, disseminated, intravascular coagulation after administration of systemic corticosteroids in combination with immunosuppressant and antibiotic agents. Although there is anecdotal evidence of balloon tamponade for posthysteroscopic acute uterine bleeding, a literature review disclosed no articles describing complications of the technique. In our patient, balloon tamponade for acute posthysteroscopic bleeding resulted in disseminated intravascular coagulation. In a second woman the procedure was successful.

We report a case of hepatic and splenic angiosarcoma in a 34 year-old man presenting with hemoperitoneum and consumption coagulopathy. Histological and immunohistological diagnosis was based on a biopsy specimen obtained through the transjugular route. Embolization via the splenic artery for the most significant lesions and intravenous chemotherapy resulted in a partial response in the liver and splenic tumour masses and survival with a good quality of life. Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a serious complication of meningococcal septicaemia. It often results in infarction of various tissues namely the skin, adrenal glands, kidneys, brain and, much less commonly, bones. We describe a patient who presented bone lesions after meningococcal septicaemia. In addition to plain radiography and scintigraphy the lesions were evaluated with MRI and have proved to be extensive and still progressive, approximately 18 months after the onset of the disease.

Thrombosis in hemophilia is very rare and is usually associated with the administration of prothrombin complex concentrates. We describe a severe hemophiliac with P. carinii pneumonia who had clinical and laboratory evidence of acute myocardial infarction and disseminated intravascular coagulation, and at autopsy, nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis as well. We suggest that prothrombin complex concentrates should be used cautiously in the setting of acute infection, and perhaps be given with appropriate doses of anticoagulants such as heparin.

We report a fatal case of occult pulmonary embolism complicating bronchogenic carcinoma which presented with rapidly progressive pulmonary miliary shadows and respiratory failure. A clotting profile abnormality compatible with disseminated intravascular coagulation was noted. Postmortem examination showed extensive clots occluding the major pulmonary vessels and areas of pulmonary infarcts. The pathogenesis, the different possible clinical manifestations and the obligatory laboratory tests are reviewed.
