[Symptomatic Meckel's diverticulum in children].

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most frequent anomaly of the small intestine, usually asymptotic. Complications of MD in children are usually bleeding and inflammation. Signs are non specific and diagnostics is prolonged. Scintigraphy is the method for the verification of bleeding from MD. A positive finding is the indication for exploration using laparoscopic or classic approach. In patients with bleeding of the MD, the literature presents, that there is usually gastric mucosa. The authors present patients with bleeding and the microscopic picture of the MD was intestinal mucosa with bleedi…

Pancreatic pseudotumor in Meckel diverticulum.

This report describes the ultrasonic appearance of an ectopic pancreatic rest presenting as a mass within an intussusception due to an inverted Meckel diverticulum. Familiarity with the ultrasound appearance of this entity may be useful to obviate unnecessary imaging workup.

[Laparoscopic surgery of Meckel's diverticulum].

Meckel's diverticulum is an evolution of omphalomesentric channel one of the most frequent embryologic abnormality of digestive tract. It is observed in two circumstances: during a routine exploration or after a complication: intestinal obstruction, peritonitis, recurrent abdominal pain. Only open or laparoscopic explorations allow a diagnosis. Resection of the diverticulum is recommended in children because the complications are frequent and serious. The preferred therapeutic method is the bowel resection with immediate anastomosis.

Meckel's diverticulum: a systematic review.

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital malformation of gastrointestinal tract. It can cause complications in the form of ulceration, haemorrhage, intussusception, intestinal obstruction, perforation and, very rarely, vesicodiverticular fistulae and tumours. These complications, especially bleeding, are more common in the paediatric age group than in adults; however it is not uncommon to miss the diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum in adults. Here, we reviewed the literature regarding the complications of this forgotten clinical entity in adults with potential diagnostic difficultie…

[Laparoscopic management of Meckel's diverticulum].

We present our observations on two young patients with repeated digestive bleeding from hemorrhagic Meckel's diverticulum. In one patient examined by Tc99 scintigraphy, the hemorrhagic area was shown in the lower abdomen. The laparoscopic exploration showed the Meckel's diverticulum at 1 m distance from ileocecal angle. Both cases were treated by resection with a vascular stapler postoperative evolution was favorable.

Scintigraphic evaluation of Zenker's diverticulum.

Zenker's diverticulum (ZD) is a rare pathology, with a prevalence of between 0.01% and 0.11%. Definitive diagnosis of ZD can be accomplished by contrast radiographic examination (barium oesophagogram, BE); oesophageal manometry (ME) is recommended mainly for those patients suffering from dysphagia and/or gastro-oesophageal reflux. The aims of the present study were to assess whether oropharyngo-oesophageal scintigraphy (OPES) is able (a) to visualise ZD and (2) to demonstrate the corresponding alteration in the swallowing phases. We studied 16 patients (nine male, seven female, mean age 67.4 y…

Meckel's diverticulum causing cecal volvulus.

Meckel's diverticulum is present in 2 per cent of the population with bowel obstruction as its most common complication. This case report describes an extremely rare complication of a Meckel's diverticulum, a cecal volvulus. The diagnosis of cecal volvulus was made preoperatively on abdominal X-rays; the diagnosis of a Meckel's diverticulum was made intraoperatively. The cecum was found to be twisted around a vitelline band on a broad-based Meckel's diverticulum extending to the umbilicus. The diverticulum was resected. The patient did well postoperatively and was discharged without any diffic…

Laparoscopic treatment of duodenal diverticulum.

A patient with a history of intermittent and intense pain in the upper abdomen secondary to an ulcer of a duodenal diverticulum underwent laparoscopic treatment. The diverticulum measured 2.5 cm in diameter and it was located on the lateral wall of the second portion of the duodenum. The diverticulum was inverted and the duodenal muscular defect was closed with interrupted sutures. Ambulation and a clear liquid diet was started on the same day as the operation, and the patient was discharged on the first postoperative day.

[Meckel's diverticulum: ten years experience].

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract. The majority of MD cases are asymptomatic although they can, occasionally, cause complications such as bleeding, intestinal obstruction and/or inflammatory process. The diagnosis is difficult and it is usually made at surgery. The treatment of choice in the patients with symptomatic MD is surgical resection while difference of opinion there are about the treatment of asymptomatic MD. The present study concerns 9 cases of MD, 7 symptomatic and 2 incidentally found during surgical abdominal operations…

[Congenital urethral diverticulum in adults].

OBJECTIVE: To report an additional case of congenital urethral diverticulum that was incidentally discovered in an adult patient that presented with prostatic syndrome. METHODS: The clinical features diagnosis and treatment of this urethral anomaly are discussed. RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: Congenital urethral diverticulum is an uncommon finding that usually requires treatment only if it is large or causes important symptoms. The patient described herein had a small urethral diverticulum that did not require treatment. However, the dome of the diverticulum was ruptured during urethrocystoscopy, thu…

Perforated leiomyosarcoma of Meckel's diverticulum.

Two cases of perforated leiomyosarcoma of Meckel's diverticulum are presented. There are only 59 cases reported in current literature, including 4 perforations. Although the condition is rare, leiomyosarcoma is the commonest tumour of Meckel's diverticulum. Its clinical presentation include abdominal pain, intestinal bleeding, abdominal mass, intestinal obstruction and less commonly, acute perforations. Both our cases presented with perforations which is unusual. Despite this late presentations both were resectable and both had no distant or local metastasis. One of our patients was 89 years o…

Meckel's diverticulum: a continuing dilemma?

Forty-three cases of Meckel's diverticulum (MD) encountered in an academic department of surgery over a 15-year period were reviewed. All of the patients and their general practitioners were contacted and long-term follow-up was obtained in 36 cases (85%). In 21 of 35 diverticulectomies, MD was an incidental finding. An overall complication rate of 26% was recorded over an average follow-up period of 8 years. In the asymptomatic group this rose to 30%. None of the eight cases in whom the diverticulum was not resected has developed early or late complications. Our findings suggest that an incid…

Meckel's diverticulum in exomphalos minor.

Fifty-four cases of exomphalos were reviewed. After the exclusion of five cases, seven out of 25 cases of exomphalos minor had co-existing Meckel's diverticulum compared with one out of 24 cases of exomphalos major. The high incidence of Meckel's diverticulum in exomphalos minor highlights the importance of surgical rather than manual reduction of the sac contents in order to exclude the presence of viscera from the sac before division. Also, the raised incidence of Meckel's diverticulum in general may well be due to a raised incidence in exomphalos minor in particular.
