Revision Arthroplasty with Total Femur Replacement for the Management of Complex Post-traumatic Bone Defect in a Patient with Dwarfism.

Dwarfism leads to an early onset of osteoarthritis of the joints of the lower limb. Due to bone deformities, arthroplasty is challenging. The incidence of implant-associated complications is higher compared to the normal population and often ends up with multiple revision arthroplasties. We report the first case in the literature of a 48-year-old patient with dwarfism who required implantation of a custom-made total femoral replacement due to aseptic stem loosening and a concomitant valgus gonarthrosis.

Loss of Wwox Causes Defective Development of Cerebral Cortex with Hypomyelination in a Rat Model of Lethal Dwarfism with Epilepsy.

WW domain-containing oxidoreductase (Wwox) is a putative tumor suppressor. Several germline mutations of Wwox have been associated with infa … ects of loss of function mutations in the Wwox gene in the immature cortex of a rat model of lethal dwarfism with epilepsy (lde/lde). Immunostaining revealed that Wwox is expressed in neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes. lde/lde cortices were characterized by a reduction in neurite growth without a reduced number of neurons, severe reduction in myeli …

Robotic surgery in patients with achondroplastic dwarfism: evaluation of risks and issues in an anatomical challenging bilateral partial nephrectomy.

The reports on the performance of robotic surgery in patients with dwarfism are anecdotal; anesthesiological issues and a challenging anatomy are the main factors that lead most of surgeons to prefer a more traditional approach. We present a case of bilateral robotic partial nephrectomy in a patient affected by achondroplastic dwarfism and aim to evaluate risks and issues in this type of surgery.

[A case of recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa associated with dwarfism with special reference to pathophysiological role of growth hormone].

Epidermolysis bullosa is a group of disorders whose common primary feature is the formation of blisters following trivial trauma. Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB), a subtype of epidermolysis bullosa, is frequently associated with growth retardation. This growth retardation has been reported to be caused by trophopathy following protein loss through skin lesions. Endocrine disorders as the cause of growth retardation in RDEB have not been clearly described. An 11-year-old female had a typical RDEB with dwarfism. Her height was 125 cm and weight was 21 kg, both of which were 2.5…

The radiological diagnosis of the fetal-face (= Robinow) syndrome (mesomelic dwarfism and small genitalia). Report of 3 cases.

Report of 3 cases with Robinow syndrome. Analysis of the X-ray findings, including the formerly reported cases. On radiological grounds, the diagnosis of the Robinow syndrome is possible by the combined observation of mesomelic shortening of the extremities, hemivertebra formation and fusion anomalies of spine and of the ribs. The "splitting" of terminal (bifid) phalanges and toes is a facultative, but highly diagnostic radiological sign. In 2 cases, the pattern profiles were of considerable similarity. The practical importance of the correct diagnosis in this syndrome is emphasized.

Adult duck fecal microbiota transplantation alleviates short beak and dwarfism syndrome in ducklings by inhibiting Th17 cell differentiation.

Novel goose parvovirus (NGPV) infection in ducklings induces short beak and dwarfism syndrome (SBDS), leading to significant economic losses. Since NGPV predominantly infects ducklings, whether reshaping the intestinal flora of ducklings through fecal microbiota transplantation from adult ducks (FMT-A) can alleviate SBDS is an interesting question. This study aimed to investigate the impact of FMT-A on the susceptibility of ducklings to NGPV infection, to elucidate the potential relationship between gut microbiota and viral pathogenicity. The results showed that ducklings were more susceptible…

Two Siblings With Microcephalic Osteodysplastic Primordial Dwarfism Type II (MOPDII) Caused by Compound Heterozygous Pericentrin (PCNT) Gene Variants.

Microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type II (MOPDII) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by severe pre- and postnatal growth failure and microcephaly. We present two male siblings with MOPDII confirmed by the identification of compound heterozygous variants in the pericentrin (PCNT) gene. The first, a twin with intrauterine growth restriction, was diagnosed postnatally at four years of age after developing dysmorphic features and neurodevelopmental delays. His younger sibling was diagnosed prenatally via chorionic villus sampling. These cases highlight that MOPDII can result…

POU1F1/Pou1f1 c.143-83A > G Variant Disrupts the Branch Site in Pre-mRNA and Leads to Dwarfism.

POU Class 1 Homeobox1 (POU1F1/Pou1f1) is a well-established pituitary-specific transcription factor, and causes, when mutated, combined pituitary hormone deficiency in humans and mice. POU1F1/Pou1f1 has 2 isoforms: the alpha and beta isoforms. Recently, pathogenic variants in the unique coding region of the beta isoform (beta domain) and the intron near the exon-intron boundary for the beta domain were reported, although their functional consequences remain obscure. In this study, we generated mice carrying the Pou1f1 c.143-83A>G substitution that recapitulates the human intronic variant near

Transgenic rice plants expressing the α-L-arabinofuranosidase of Coprinopsis cinerea exhibit strong dwarfism and markedly enhanced tillering.

Lignocellulosic materials are potential renewable sources of fermentable sugars for bioethanol production. In this study, we used the CcAbf62A gene encoding CcAbf62A, a putative extracellular α-L-arabinofuranosidase, cloned from the mycotrophic basidiomycete Coprinopsis cinerea. CcAbf62A acts on arabinoxylan, the major hemicellulose of grasses, releasing arabinose. CcAbf62A was introduced into rice with the aim of enhancing delignification efficiency and the availability of lignocellulosic materials without reducing lignin content. Among the 32 lines of regenerated transgenic rice, 13 exhibite

[Chronic giardiasis with intestinal dwarfism and delayed puberty in immunoglobulin deficiency syndrome: complete catch-up growth after therapy].

A 10-year-old, previously healthy Swiss boy suffered from repeated episodes of watery diarrhea for some months following a summer camp holiday. No etiology was found, and except for symptomatic treatment no other therapy was necessary. Five years later he was investigated because of growth failure, with a bone age of 11.5 years, but the correct diagnosis was not established. Only when he was reinvestigated at the age of 20 years, because of persistent growth failure and a bone age of 14 years, were Giardia lamblia trophozoites seen microscopically on the surface of duodenal mucosa biopsy speci

Overexpression of pineapple gibberellin 2-oxidase gene AcGA2ox6 in Arabidopsis induces delayed flowering, dwarfism, and enhanced leaf serration.

Despite the widespread use of ethephon to induce synchronous flowering in pineapple, the molecular mechanisms underlying its action are still not fully defined. Our previous RNA-seq analysis identified a gibberellin 2-oxidase (GA2ox) gene, AcGA2ox6, as being associated with flowering, but its functional role remained unconfirmed. In this study, we conducted a functional characterization of AcGA2ox6 through bioinformatics analysis, subcellular localization, and overexpression in Arabidopsis. Transgenic Arabidopsis lines exhibited striking phenotypes, including dwarfism, darker green and highly …

Duck "beak atrophy and dwarfism syndrome" disease complex: Interplay of novel goose parvovirus-related virus and duck circovirus?

As a newly emerged infectious disease, duck "beak atrophy and dwarfism syndrome (BADS)" disease has caused huge economic losses to waterfowl industry in China since 2015. Novel goose parvovirus-related virus (NGPV) is believed the main pathogen of BADS disease; however, BADS is rarely reproduced by infecting ducks with NGPV alone. As avian circovirus infection causes clinical symptoms similar to BADS, duck circovirus (DuCV) is suspected the minor pathogen of BADS disease. In this study, an investigation was carried out to determine the coinfection of NGPV and DuCV in duck embryos and in ducks …

Mutation in WDR4 impairs tRNA m(7)G46 methylation and causes a distinct form of microcephalic primordial dwarfism.

BACKGROUND: Primordial dwarfism is a state of extreme prenatal and postnatal growth deficiency, and is characterized by marked clinical and genetic heterogeneity. RESULTS: Two presumably unrelated consanguineous families presented with an apparently novel form of primordial dwarfism in which severe growth deficiency is accompanied by distinct facial dysmorphism, brain malformation (microcephaly, agenesis of corpus callosum, and simplified gyration), and severe encephalopathy with seizures. Combined autozygome/exome analysis revealed a novel missense mutation in WDR4 as the likely causal varia…

Dominant dwarfism in transgenic rats by targeting human growth hormone (GH) expression to hypothalamic GH-releasing factor neurons.

Expression of human growth hormone (hGH) was targeted to growth hormone-releasing (GRF) neurons in the hypothalamus of transgenic rats. This induced dominant dwarfism by local feedback inhibition of GRF. One line, bearing a single copy of a GRF-hGH transgene, has been characterized in detail, and has been termed Tgr (for Transgenic growth-retarded). hGH was detected by immunocytochemistry in the brain, restricted to the median eminence of the hypothalamus. Low levels were also detected in the anterior pituitary gland by radioimmunoassay. Transgene expression in these sites was confirmed by RT-…
