Microtia can be defined as a malformation of the auricle with varying severity. In the majority of patients it is combined with atresia or stenosis of the external auditory canal. The prevalence of microtia in Finland is approx. 4 out of 10000. Associated anomalies should be actively seeked and excluded. Approximately 70% of the patients seem to be non-syndromatic. Tuberculosis is a rare cause of chronic suppurative otitis media and mastoiditis; the predisposing factors of this association, however, are not commonly described. Epithelial cells of the inner ear coordinate their ion transport activity through a number of mechanisms. One important mechanism is the autocrine and paracrine signaling among neighboring cells in the ear via nucleotides, such as adenosine, ATP and UTP. This review summarizes observations on the release, detection and degradation of nucleotides by epithelial cells of the inner ear. Purinergic signaling is thought to be important for endolymph ion homeostasis and for protection from acoustic over-stimulation.

This study reports the evaluation of "second ear" stapedotomiesy results in 23 patients with otosclerosis. All pre- and post-operative audiological data, all relevant surgical information and patients' features were analyzed retrospectively.
