Efficient vitamin A production in Lipomyces starkeyi through metabolic engineering of the β-carotene and retinoid pathways.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A, an essential micronutrient, is critical for vision, immune function, and cellular differentiation. Traditional vitamin A production methods, primarily based on chemical synthesis, pose significant environmental challenges. Microbial fermentation offers a sustainable alternative, but microbial production of vitamin A has yet to match chemical synthesis in terms of yield and cost-effectiveness. Oleaginous yeasts, such as Lipomyces starkeyi, which can synthesize high levels of acetyl-CoA and lipids, represent promising platforms for producing high-value lipophilic compounds

Ni-Fe Dual-Site Polymer Catalyst for High Performance and Stable Electrochemical Urea Synthesis from CO2 and NO3.

The electrochemical synthesis of urea from nitrate (NO3 -) and carbon dioxide (CO2) presents a sustainable alternative to conventional methods, mitigating pollution and reducing energy consumption. Herein, a rationally designed Ni-Fe bimetallic pyromellitic acid polymer catalyst (Ni-PMDA@Fe) is developed for efficient urea electrosynthesis. This metal-organic polymer provides structural robustness, abundant active sites, and a tunable coordination environment, optimizing C-N coupling kinetics. Ni-PMDA@Fe achieves a urea yield of 449.56 mg h-1 gcat -1 and a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 41.06% at

Controlling product distributions from ethanol electrolysis.

Electrolysis of bioethanol in proton exchange fuel cells has the potential to become an important technology for sustainable production of green hydrogen and platform chemicals. However, the economic competitiveness of the process relative to water electrolysis is uncertain and will depend strongly on the demand for acetic acid, acetaldehyde, and other by-products. Controlling the product distribution is consequently a crucial element for development of ethanol electrolysis technology. This review focuses on the factors that determine product distributions and mechanistic models of the reactio

Does digital infrastructure improve individuals' body weight? A quasi-natural experiment based on "Broadband China" policy.

Whether digital infrastructure development improves population health outcomes remains empirically contested. This study exploits China's "Broadband China" pilot policy-implemented in staggered batches across 117 cities during 2014-2016-as a quasi-natural experiment and employs a difference-in-differences (DID) design with seven waves of the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS, 2010-2022) to estimate the causal effect of broadband infrastructure expansion on individual body weight and weight-related health inequality. The main findings are threefold. First, the "Broadband China" policy significan

The impact of circularity and circular strategies on firm employment.

In the past, research on a circular economy often focused on economic and ecological sustainability, while research on the social side of circularity has stepped up recently. The circular economy is often framed as a way to not only foster competitiveness and resource security, but also create opportunities to boost employment and provide high-quality, local jobs. This study aims to be the first to empirically interrogate this labor-enhancing assumption by using advanced Natural Language Processing in a unique combination with cross-sectional regression analysis for all private companies in Be

Unlocking the potential of Chinese herbal medicine residue-derived biochar as an efficient adsorbent for high-performance tetracycline removal.

This study employed hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) in conjunction with ZnCl2 activation and pyrolysis to produce biochar from one traditional Chinese medicine astragali radix (AR) residue. The resultant biochar was evaluated as a sustainable adsorbent for tetracycline (TC) elimination from water. The adsorption performance of TC on two micropore-rich AR biochars, AR@ZnCl2 (1370 m2 g-1) and HAR@ZnCl2 (1896 m2 g-1), was comprehensively evaluated using adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics. By virtue of pore diffusion, π-π interaction, electrostatic attraction, and hydrogen bonding

Mechanistic Study on the Possibility of Converting Dissociated Oxygen into Formic Acid on χ-Fe5C2(510) for Resource Recovery in Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis.

During Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, O atoms are dissociated on the surface of Fe-based catalysts. However, most of the dissociated O would be removed as H2O or CO2, which results in a low atom economy. Hence, a comprehensive study of the O removal pathway as formic acid has been investigated using the combination of density functional theory (DFT) and kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) to improve the economics of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis on Fe-based catalysts. The results show that the optimal pathway for the removal of dissociated O as formic acid is the OH pathway, of which the effective barrier energ

Brucella abortus S19 GFP-tagged vaccine allows the serological identification of vaccinated cattle.

Bovine brucellosis induces abortion in cows, produces important economic losses, and causes a widely distributed zoonosis. Its eradication was achieved in several countries after sustained vaccination with the live attenuated Brucella abortus S19 vaccine, in combination with the slaughtering of serologically positive animals. S19 induces antibodies against the smooth lipopolysaccharide (S-LPS), making difficult the differentiation of infected from vaccinated bovines. We developed an S19 strain constitutively expressing the green fluorescent protein (S19-GFP) coded in chromosome II. The S19-GFP

Improved efficiency of butanol production by absorbent fermentation with a renewable carrier.

BACKGROUND: Biobutanol production is still not economically competitive because of some principal drawbacks including high cost in feedstock consumption, low butanol concentration in the fermentation broth caused by severe product inhibition. An alternative fermentation mode is becoming an urgent requirement to solve these problems. Biobutanol production by absorbent fermentation with a renewable carrier, i.e. pretreated straw materials, is studied in this paper. RESULTS: Compared with other types of porous media, alkali-treated steam-exploded straw was proved to be a suitable carrier for abs

Introducing vaccination against serogroup B meningococcal disease: an economic and mathematical modelling study of potential impact.

BACKGROUND: Meningococcal disease remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The first broadly effective vaccine against group B disease (which causes considerable meningococcal disease in Europe, the Americas and Australasia) was licensed in the EU in January 2013; our objective was to estimate the potential impact of introducing such a vaccine in England. METHODS: We developed two models to estimate the impact of introducing a new 'MenB' vaccine. The cohort model assumes the vaccine protects against disease only; the transmission dynamic model also allows the vaccine t

"You should be grateful to have medicines": continued dependence, altering stigma and the HIV treatment experience in Serbia.

The expectation that universal HIV treatment access in resource-stretched settings will reduce stigma is a powerful aspiration that has been incorporated into a global rhetoric of hope around the HIV pandemic. Between 2005 and 2007, we undertook qualitative longitudinal research with people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) in Serbia. We draw here upon the thematic analysis of prospective interview accounts of 20 individuals to analyse PLHIV's perceptions of the influence of HIV treatment upon their quality of life. HIV is one of few conditions in Serbia where its treatment is fully funded by the s

Assessment of Fasciola and Paramphistomes co-infection in large ruminants through faecal egg counts around Taiping, Malaysia.

Emerging cases of Fasciola and Paramphistomes co-infection have been reported, especially in tropical regions. Thisis due to Fasciola and Paramphistomes sharing biological factors which influence the pattern of transmission, especially in faecal egg shedding due to interaction and competition in the definitive host. Most reports surveyed the occurrence of fasciolosis in ruminants with a lack of observation of faecal egg distribution. Therefore, present study is aimed to assess the distribution of Fasciola and Paramphistomes faecal egg count (fec) in co-infected large ruminants in Larut, Matang
