The shifting demographics of birth-related brachial plexus injury: The impact of socio-economic status and ethnic groups.

INTRODUCTION: Many of the risk factors for birth-related brachial plexus injury (BRBPI), such as maternal gestational diabetes and macrosomia, are known to vary between demographic groups. Socio-economic differences are known to influence access to healthcare, including elective caesarean section rates and access to consultant obstetricians, which could impact the rates of BRBPI. This study aims to explore whether BRBPI is affected by demographic factors. METHOD: This retrospective study compares cohorts of BRBPI patients referred to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in 2004, 2014 and 2

Factors influencing the implementation of health care reform: an examination of the Concurrent Care for Children provision.

In the wake of the 2013 Presidential reelection, states now face the reality of implementing the healthcare reform, including ACA section 2302 (Concurrent Care for Children). The purpose of our study was to examine the influence of economic, political, and legal factors on state implementation of ACA 2302. Using data from 2010 to 2012, our analysis revealed that for early implementers economic, political or legal factors did not influence implementation of ACA 2302. In 2011, states that were engaged in Medicaid cost containment efforts were more likely to implement ACA 2302 and in 2012, states

How socio-economic and atmospheric variables impact COVID-19 and influenza outbreaks in tropical and subtropical regions of Brazil.

COVID-19 has been disturbing human society with an intensity never seen since the Influenza epidemic (Spanish flu). COVID-19 and Influenza are both respiratory viruses and, in this study, we explore the relations of COVID-19 and Influenza with atmospheric variables and socio-economic conditions for tropical and subtropical climates in Brazil. Atmospheric variables, mobility, socio-economic conditions and population information were analyzed using a generalized additive model for daily COVID-19 cases from March 1st to May 15th, 2020, and for daily Influenza hospitalizations (2017-2019) in Brazi

Racial differences in the determinants of living arrangements of widowed and divorced elderly women.

Ability to afford single, separate households has been perceived as the key determinant of living alone among single older women. This paper shows that, when race is analyzed separately, family-related variables such as marital history and the number of children raised, rather than economic affordability, are the most important factors in the living arrangement decision of widowed elderly women of color. Economic affordability also turns out to be insignificant when white and nonwhite divorced elderly women are analyzed separately.

Spatial analysis of the relationship between early childhood mortality and malaria endemicity in Malawi.

Spatial differences in mortality have been reported in Africa amongst children under-five years of age. Risk factors contributing to this geographical variation include bio-demographic and socio-economic factors, the prevalence of infectious diseases and the variability in the quality of child health care. This paper is concerned with investigating the link between early childhood mortality and malaria risk. We used data from the Mapping Malaria Risk in Africa (MARA) and Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) databases to explore this relationship. The DHS survey included questions on bio-demogra…

Work status and health of women: a comparative study of northern and southern states of rural India.

The paper examines the net effect of work status on women's health and whether the effect persists after controlling for the influence of socio-economic factors. Our hypothesis is that working women face a greater risk of morbidity and mortality, given that most would be expected to shoulder dual responsibilities: market and household. The paper also examines whether the risk varies across regions. In particular, we examine whether the work status-health relationship differs between the southern and northern regions of India, which are known to be distinct in female autonomy. While women in In…
