The prevalence of IgG antibodies to three recombinant O. volvulus antigens, OvMBP/10, OvMBP/11 and OvMBP/29 was determined in a group of 94 microfilaria positive (mf+) individuals resident in the hyperendemic onchocercal area of Esmeraldas Province, Ecuador. Clone OvMBP/11 was the antigen most frequently recognized by patients sera followed by OvMBP/10 and OvMBP/29. When a cocktail of the three recombinant antigens was used the proportion of positive sera increased to 100%. Antibody responses to the fusion partner maltose binding protein (MBP) were low in comparison with those to the cloned an…

BACKGROUND: Chronic malnutrition in children (CMC) remains a pressing public health issue in Ecuador, especially in the rural Sierra communities. Support from community health workers (CHWs) to families during the first 1000 days of life is crucial for prevention. However, CHWs face operational challenges that reduce intervention effectiveness, emphasising the need to develop mobile health (mHealth) tools that are contextually appropriate, culturally relevant, and technically reliable.
OBJECTIVE: To design an mHealth tool (called Mikuy) that enables CHWs to implement a family support strategy…

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) requires sustained behavioral changes to achieve glycemic control (GC) and prevent complications. Social support (SS) is key for self-care in chronic conditions, yet its impact on GC in low-resource settings remains understudied. This study explores the role of SS in T2DM management in a low-income community in Quito, Ecuador.
METHODS: We employed a mixed-methods approach with a parallel convergent design. A retrospective cohort study was conducted with 332 adults aged 25-88 years with T2DM, recruited from public health facilities in district D1706. Quanti…

Humans can be infected with anthroponotic (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus) and with zoonotic (Ancylostoma ceylanicum, A. caninum, A. braziliense, and Uncinaria stenocephala) hookworms from dogs. Anthroponotic species are usually thought not to infect dogs. We used the internal transcribed spacer-1 (ITS1) gene in a quantitative PCR to detect anthroponotic and zoonotic hookworm species in fecal samples from 54 children and 79 dogs living in an indigenous community in tropical Northwestern Ecuador. Hookworm DNA was detected in 59.3% of children and 92.4% of dogs. Among samples from …

Lobomycosis-like disease (LLD) is a chronic granulomatous skin disorder that affects Delphinidae worldwide. LLD has been observed in common bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus from the Gulf of Guayaquil, Ecuador, since 1990. Although exogenous factors such as salinity and pollution may play a role in the pathogenesis of this disease in estuarine and coastal dolphin communities, we hypothesized that demography and social behaviour may also influence its epidemiology. To address this issue, the role of social behaviour in the distribution and prevalence of LLD was assessed through hierarchica…
