The zebrafish, a useful animal model for genetic studies, has a photosensitive pineal gland, which has an endogenous circadian pacemaker entrained to environmental light-dark cycles [G.M. Cahill, Brain Res. 708 (1996) 177-181]. Although pinopsin has been found in the pineal glands of birds and reptiles, the molecular identity responsible for fish pineal photosensitivity remains unclear. This study reports identification of a novel opsin gene expressed in the zebrafish pineal gland. The deduced amino acid sequence is similar to, but not identical (74% identity) with that of canonical rhodopsin

An EEL reflectance spectrophotometer was used to measure the skin color of the inner upper arm and the forearm of 913 Karkar Islanders (Madang District) and 684 Lufa villagers (Eastern Highlands District). The samples were subdivided to study sex, age, and population variation against a background of ecological observations, including sunlight exposure, clothing, and erythemally effective wavelengths of ultraviolet light (Robertson, unpublished Ph.D. thesis, 1974). Population differences in sex and age variation in upper arm skin color may largely be attributable to the effects of culturally a

Anthelmintics are veterinary drugs used to treat or prevent diseases in livestock and fishery products. However, their residues in animal-derived foods pose potential risks to human health. In Korea, maximum residue limits (MRLs) have been established to regulate such residues; however, for certain substances, including niclosamide, a widely used anthelmintic, only qualitative analytical methods are available, limiting effective residue monitoring. This study developed a multiresidue quantitative analytical method for 18 anthelmintic compounds. Method validation was conducted in accordance wit

The crystal structure of 1-[2-fluoro-6-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl]-5-iodo-6-methylpyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione (C13H9F4IN2O2, IFMBU), a key intermediate for Elagolix synthesis, was determined and reported for the first time, and further investigated by theoretical calculations. The molecule adopts a twisted `V'-shaped conformation, wherein the substituted benzene ring plane is nearly orthogonal to the uracil plane. In the crystal, molecules are linked by strong intermolecular N-H...O hydrogen bonds into centrosymmetric dimers, generating a highly stable R22(8) supramolecular ring motif. Hirshfeld

To date, four species of the genus Edwardsiella-E. tarda, E. ictaluri, E. piscicida, and E. anguilarum-have been identified as the cause of disease and mortality in various fish species. Thirty-six Edwardsiella strains isolated from different fish species in the Netherlands were identified using multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) based on sequence analysis of the genes gyrB, pgi and phoU. In parallel, an Edwardsiella matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) database was created by analyzing peptide spectra of a subset of these strains belongi

Shansha Bay, southeastern China, is a typical semi-enclosed bay facing intense anthropogenic pressure, with mariculture production reaching approximately 660,000 tons annually, predominantly driven by the large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) industry. To assess how these pressures influence biodiversity detection, we employed eDNA metabarcoding targeting the 12S rRNA gene to survey fish diversity across 10 sites, integrating both surface water and sediment matrices. A total of 40 species belonging to 16 orders, 27 families and 32 genera, were identified. Among them, L. crocea, Bostrychus

BACKGROUND: High myopia (HM) is a progressive ocular condition characterized by excessive axial elongation and severe refractive errors, often leading to sight-threatening complications. The underlying pathological driver of HM is the weakening of scleral biomechanics, making the sclera a key therapeutic target. While posterior scleral reinforcement (PSR) has been established as an effective intervention to strengthen the sclera, currently available PSR materials often fail to fully meet clinical demands.
RESULTS: Inspired by the electric eel, which generates surface electrolytes to facilitat

Image-based identification and quantification of different types of spermatogenic cells is of great importance, not only for reproductive studies but also for genetic breeding. Here, we have developed antibodies against spermatogenesis-related proteins in zebrafish (Danio rerio), including Ddx4, Piwil1, Sycp3, and Pcna, and a high-throughput method for immunofluorescence analysis of zebrafish testicular sections. By immunofluorescence analysis of zebrafish testes, our results demonstrate that the expression of Ddx4 decreases progressively during spermatogenesis, Piwil1 is strongly expressed in

Information on slaughter procedures for farmed fish in aquaculture is limited, both in Europe and in Italy, due to a general lack of field data. The aim of this study was to gather information on the procedures used to slaughter fish in Italy and to discuss them considering the WOAH and EFSA recommendations on fish welfare. Using a questionnaire survey, data were collected by official veterinarians in 64 slaughtering facilities where 20 different species of fish were slaughtered. The main species slaughtered were rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss; 29/64), followed by European sea bass (Dicent

The irreversible aggregation of proteins or peptides greatly limits their bioavailability; therefore, effective inhibition using small molecules or biocompatible materials is very difficult. Human calcitonin (hCT), a hormone polypeptide with 32 residues, is secreted by the C-cells of the thyroid gland. The biological function of this hormone is to regulate calcium and phosphate concentrations in the blood via several different pathways. One of these is to inhibit the activity of osteoclasts; thus, calcitonin could be used to treat osteoporosis and Paget's disease of the bone. However, hCT is p

BACKGROUND: Saffold virus (SAFV), which belongs to the genus Cardiovirus of the family Picornaviridae, is associated with acute respiratory or gastrointestinal illnesses in children; it is also suspected to cause severe diseases, such as acute flaccid paralysis and aseptic meningitis. However, the understanding of the mechanism of its pathogenicity is still limited due to the many unknowns about its lifecycle; for example, the cellular receptor for its infection remains to be determined. A system to monitor SAFV infection in vitro and in vivo is required in order to accelerate research on SAFV

A new species of the recently erected genus of proteocephalid cestodes, Synbranchiella Arredondo, Alves and Gil de Pertierra, 2017 , is described based on specimens found in the mountain mullet, Dajaus monticola (Bancroft, 1834), from Costa Rica. The new species is placed in Synbranchiella because of the cortical position of the genital organs (typical of the former subfamily Monticelliinae); a robust scolex (lacking a metascolex) having a dome-shaped apex and biloculate suckers (lacking free posterior margins); vitelline follicles in 2 narrow lateral bands; a vagina always anterior to the cir

Leptospirosis caused by spirochete bacterium of genus Leptospira affects humans and animals worldwide. Rodents are major reservoirs of leptospires whereas wetland and aquatic migratory birds also carry and transmit leptospires. Leptospirosis studies in fish are lacking in African countries despite favourable environment and abundant reservoirs, which can spread leptospires into aquatic habitats and infect fish. The objectives of this study were to determine presence of Leptospira in fish; the prevalent Leptospira serovars and whether are related to serovars reported in animals; and to ascertai

This study investigates the susceptibilities of the SPB cell line to fish viruses including giant seaperch iridovirus (GSIV-K1), red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV-Ku), grouper nervous necrosis virus (GNNV-K1), chum salmon reovirus (CSV) and eel herpesvirus (HVA). GSIV-K1, RSIV-Ku and CSV replicated well in SPB cells, with a significant cytopathic effect and virus production. However, the cells were HVA and GNNV refractory. To examine the ability of SPB cells to stably express foreign protein, expression vectors encoding GNNV B1 and B2 fused to enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) and GSIV OR

The organization of the minimal neuronal substrate capable of generating locomotor rhythmicity in vertebrates is investigated in several species, with an emphasis on identifying evolutionary-conserved features. In lamprey, an eel-like lower vertebrate that swims by undulatory movements of the body, the network has been identified as a recurrent network of excitatory interneurons localized in each spinal hemisegment. This conclusion rested upon the observation that each side of the spinal cord is able to express rhythmic locomotor-related bursting after being surgically separated along the midl

trans-3,3'-Bis[alpha-(trimethylammonio)methyl]azobenzene bromide (BisQ) is a potent agonist of the acetylcholine receptor (AcChoR) of Electrophorus electricus. BisQ is highly constrained, suggesting that its structure is complementary to the combining site of the AcChoR when the latter is in its activated state. Antibodies produced in rabbits to a conjugate of bovine serum albumin and a derivative of BisQ mimicked the binding characteristics of the AcChoR with respect to the order of binding of a variety of agonists and to the preferred recognition of decamethonium ion (an agonist) over hexame
