The Biomimetic Electrical Stimulation System Inducing Osteogenic Differentiations of BMSCs.

Electrical stimulation has been used clinically as an adjunct therapy to accelerate the healing of bone defects, and its mechanism requires further investigations. The complexity of the physiological microenvironment makes it challenging to study the effect of electrical signal on cells alone. Therefore, an artificial system mimicking cell microenvironment in vitro was developed to address this issue. In this work, a novel electrical stimulation system was constructed based on polypyrrole nanowires (ppyNWs) with a high aspect ratio. Synthesized ppyNWs formed a conductive network in the composi

Electrical stimulation: a novel therapeutic strategy to heal biological wounds.

Electrical stimulation (ES) has emerged as a powerful therapeutic modality for enhancing biological wound healing. This non-invasive technique utilizes low-level electrical currents to promote tissue regeneration and expedite the wound healing process. ES has been shown to accelerate wound closure, reduce inflammation, enhance angiogenesis, and modulate cell migration and proliferation through various mechanisms. The principle goal of wound management is the rapid recovery of the anatomical continuity of the skin, to prevent infections from the external environment and maintain homeostasis con

Electrical stimulation of the cerebellum facilitates automatic but not controlled word retrieval.

Recent research has indicated that the cerebellum is engaged in language functions, yet the role of the cerebellum in lexical-semantic memory is poorly understood. In a double-blind randomized controlled experiment, we therefore targeted the cerebellum by transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to assess and compare the contribution of the cerebellar processing to automatic and controlled retrieval of words in healthy adults (n = 136). Anodal cerebellar tDCS facilitated retrieval of semantically related words in free-associative chains, which was not due to a non-specific acceleration o

Intraoperative electrical stimulation for persistent, post-traumatic facial paralysis.

Approximately 7-10% of temporal bone fractures result in facial nerve paralysis. Treatment is dependent upon the severity of the nerve trauma and can range from conservative medical management to surgical intervention. A study by Hato et al. detailed the relationship between surgical timing and recovery rate for patients with facial nerve palsy secondary to temporal bone trauma. The rates of complete recovery and good recovery decline that the longer surgical intervention is delayed. We present the case of a 14-year-old male with a temporal bone fracture and delayed onset right-sided facial pa

Electrical stimulation alters DNA methylation and promotes neurite outgrowth.

Electrical stimulation (ES) influences neural regeneration and functionality. We here investigate whether ES regulates DNA demethylation, a critical epigenetic event known to influence nerve regeneration. Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) have long served as a standard model for central nervous system neurons, whose growth and disease development are reportedly affected by DNA methylation. The current study focuses on the ability of ES to rescue RGCs and preserve vision by modulating DNA demethylation. To evaluate DNA demethylation pattern during development, RGCs from mice at different stages of

The impact of pelvic floor electrical stimulation on vaginal microbiota and immunity.

Pelvic floor electrical stimulation (ES) is an effective treatment for pelvic floor dysfunction. However, the impact of ES on vaginal microbiota and local inflammatory response is yet poorly understood. Therefore, we designed a longitudinal study to investigate the impact of ES on vaginal microbiota and cytokines. A total of 170 participants were recruited into the study at Peking University International Hospital, Beijing, China, from December 2021 to April 2022. They were divided into two groups concerning the follow-up: long-term cohort (n = 147) following up to seven treatment sessions and

Effects of transcranial electrical stimulation techniques on foreign vocabulary learning.

Although the use of transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) techniques on healthy population has been linked to facilitating language learning, studies on their effects on foreign language learning processes are scarce and results remain unclear. The objective of this study was to analyze whether tES enhances foreign language learning processes. Sixty-four healthy native Spanish-speaking participants were randomly assigned to four groups (transcranial direct current, transcranial random noise, tDCS-tRNS stimulation, or sham). They completed two intervention sessions with a two-week gap in be

Non-invasive electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves for the management of tremor.

Pathological tremor in patients with essential tremor and Parkinsons disease is typically treated using medication or neurosurgical interventions. There is a widely recognized need for new treatments that avoid the side effects of current medications and do not carry the risks of surgical interventions. Building on decades of research and engineering development, non-invasive electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves has emerged as a safe and effective strategy for reducing pathologic tremor in essential tremor. This review surveys the peripheral electrical stimulation (PES) literature and s

Complex negative emotions induced by electrical stimulation of the human hypothalamus.

BACKGROUND: Stimulation of the ventromedial hypothalamic region in animals has been reported to cause attack behavior labeled as sham-rage without offering information about the internal affective state of the animal being stimulated. OBJECTIVE: To examine the causal effect of electrical stimulation near the ventromedial region of the human hypothalamus on the human subjective experience and map the electrophysiological connectivity of the hypothalamus with other brain regions. METHODS: We examined a patient (Subject S20_150) with intracranial electrodes implanted across 170 brain regions, i

Design considerations for piezocomposite materials for electrical stimulation in medical implants.

Incidence of non-union following long bone fracture fixation and spinal fusion procedures is increasing, and very costly for patients and the medical system. Direct current (DC) electrical stimulation has shown success as an adjunct therapy to stimulate bone healing and increase surgery success rates, though drawbacks of current devices and implantable battery packs have limited widespread use. Energy harvesting utilising piezoelectric materials has been widely studied for powering devices without a battery, and a preclinical animal study has shown efficacy of a piezocomposite spinal fusion im

MRIES: A Matlab Toolbox for Mapping the Responses to Intracranial Electrical Stimulation.

PROPOSE: Directed cortical responses to intracranial electrical stimulation are a good standard for mapping inter-regional direct connectivity. Cortico-cortical evoked potential (CCEP), elicited by single pulse electrical stimulation (SPES), has been widely used to map the normal and abnormal brain effective network. However, automated processing of CCEP datasets and visualization of connectivity results remain challenging for researchers and clinicians. In this study, we develop a Matlab toolbox named MRIES (Mapping the Responses to Intracranial Electrical Stimulation) to automatically proces

Electrical vagus nerve stimulation as a prophylaxis for SIRS and postoperative ileus.

Abdominal surgery results in an activation of immune cells of the bowel wall and a consecutive cytokine and nitric oxide (NO) release leading to an inflammation of the muscularis externa and a bowel paralysis, the so-called postoperative ileus (POI). In addition to the local inflammation, major surgical trauma can also lead to a variable pronounced systemic inflammation up to its maximum variant, the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), with hypotension, capillary leak and a breakdown of the intestinal barrier function followed by multi-organ dysfunction (MODS). Until now, neither f

Electrical stimulation for pain reduction in hard-to-heal wound healing.

OBJECTIVE: Despite treatment advances over the past 30 years, the societal impact of hard-to-heal wounds is increasingly burdensome. An unresolved issue is wound pain, which can make many treatments, such as compression in venous leg ulcers, intolerable. The aim of this review is to present the evidence and stimulate thinking on the use of electrical stimulation devices as a treatment technology with the potential to reduce pain, improve adherence and thus hard-to-heal wound outcomes. METHOD: A literature search was conducted for clinical studies up to August 2020 reporting the effects of ele

The Use of Electrical Nerve Stimulation to Treat Migraines: A Systematic Review.

Migraines have been defined as an intense unilateral throbbing or pulsating sensation lasting anywhere between a few hours to multiple days. They are the sixth most prevalent disease in the United States, with approximately 18% of women and 6% of men experiencing some form of a migraine throughout their lifetime. In addition, they pose a significant economic burden, accounting for anywhere between $13 and $17 billion in medical costs annually in the United States. While there are a wide variety of treatments for migraines on the market, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), be

A Review of Functional Electrical Stimulation Treatment in Spinal Cord Injury.

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) has been widely adopted to elicit muscle contraction in rehabilitation training after spinal cord injury (SCI). Conventional FES modalities include stimulations coupled with rowing, cycling, assisted walking and other derivatives. In this review, we studied thirteen clinical reports from the past 5 years and evaluated the effects of various FES aided rehabilitation plans on the functional recovery after SCI, highlighting upper and lower extremity strength, cardiopulmonary function, and balder control. We further explored potential mechanisms of FES using
