There are very few surgical options available for treating a patient with winged scapula caused by a long thoracic nerve (LTN) injury. Therefore, we devised a novel technique based on a cadaveric dissection whereby regional intercostal nerves (ICN) were harvested and transposed to the adjacent LTN in 10 embalmed cadavers (20 sides). The LTN was identified along the lateral border of the serratus anterior and ICNs were identified at the mid-axillary line inferior to the lower edge of the pectoralis major muscle. Along the mid-clavicular line, each ICN was transected and transposed to the adjace

BACKGROUND: The iliotibial band (ITB) trifurcates into the anterior, central and posterior branches at the knee level, and sometimes the branches must be selectively released to correct the valgus knee deformity during total knee arthroplasty. However, the anatomical morphology of the trifurcate ITBs has not been investigated.
METHODS: Fifty-two knees from 26 embalmed cadavers were dissected to observe and record the relationship of the three branches given off from the ITB trifurcation. Fourteen parameters with regard to the length, width, thickness, and trifurcate angle of each branch were

BACKGROUND: The marginal mandibular branch (Mbr) of the facial nerve is vulnerable to damage during rhytidoplasty, surgical reduction of the mandibular angle, parotidectomy, and excision of the submandibular gland.
OBJECTIVES: The authors sought to map the Mbr and determine the relationship between the number of Mbr offshoots and the course of the Mbr.
METHODS: The Mbr was examined in 29 hemifaces from 12 embalmed and 4 fresh cadavers (10 males, 6 females; mean age, 73.7 years).
RESULTS: The Mbr was located ≤5 mm from the gonion (Go) in 24 of 29 hemifaces (82.8%) and ≤10 mm from the interse

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this paper was to identify the determining factors of the glottal prephonatory configuration from the point of view of the resulting muscular actions (i.e., arytenoids adduction, membranous vocal fold adduction, and tension).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 21 human non-embalmed excised larynges (12 females and 9 males) were studied. Experiment A (11 larynges) studied four conditions of adduction of the vocal folds and arytenoids. Experiment B (10 larynges) studied the effect of cricothyroid approximation on the vocal fold length and the cricothyroid angle.
RESULTS: Exp

AIMS: The aim was to develop a new laparoscopic technique for placement of a pudendal lead.
METHODS: Development of a direct, feasible and reliable minimal-invasive laparoscopic approach to the pudendal nerve (PN). Thirty-one embalmed human specimens were dissected for the relevant anatomic structures of the pelvis. Step-by-step documentation and analysis of the laparoscopic approach in order to locate the PN directly in its course around the medial part of the sacrospinous ligament and test this approach for feasibility. Landmarks for intraoperative navigation towards the PN as well as the p

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the position of the subscapular nerves relative to surgical landmarks during exposure and to analyze the pattern of innervation of the subscapularis to avoid injury during anterior shoulder surgery.
METHODS: 20 embalmed human cadaveric shoulder specimens were used in the study. The muscular insertions of the subscapular nerves were marked and their closest branches to the musculotendinous junction and the coracoid process were measured in horizontal and vertical distances. In addition, the innervation pattern of each specimen was documented.

PURPOSE: Taking into consideration that the aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) is the commonest congenital aortic arch anomaly (prevalence 0.16-4.4%), our goal was to investigate its incidence in Greeks, with respect to location, course, and relationship to trachea and esophagus. Gender dimorphism, coexisting neural, and vascular variations were also examined. The clinical impact and embryological background of the variation are discussed.
METHODS: Two hundred and sixty-seven (126 male and 141 female) formalin-embalmed Greek cadavers (mean age 59 ± 13 years) were examined.

INTRODUCTION: Volar locking plates are used to treat unstable and displaced fractures of the distal radius. Potential advantages of stable anatomical reduction (eg early mobilisation) can be limited by penetration of dorsal screws, leading to synovitis and potential rupture of extensor tendons. Despite intraoperative imaging, penetration of dorsal screws continues to be a problem in volar plating of the distal radius. Ultrasound is a well recognised, readily available, diagnostic tool used to assess soft-tissue impingement by orthopaedic hardware. In this cadaveric study, we wished to ascertai

Road accidents can lead to abdominal injuries ranging from severe to lethal, that include hemorrhage of organs and their attachment system. A good understanding and prediction of abdominal injuries therefore requires investigation of the mechanical properties of the attachment systems of abdominal organs. In particular, the gastrocolic ligament (GCL) is one major link between the stomach and the transverse colon. This study aims to investigate the mechanical properties of the GCL under very low and high strain rate uniaxial tensile tests until failure. Thirty-five GCL samples were dissected fr

INTRODUCTION: The sympathetic trunks are two ganglionated nerve trunks that extend the whole length of the vertebral column. The two trunks end by joining together to form a single ganglion, the ganglion impar. The thoracic part of the sympathetic chain runs downward and leaves the thorax behind the medial arcuate ligament. The preganglionic fibers which are grouped together to forms planchnic nerves and supply the abdominal viscera. Anatomical variations of the thoracic sympathetic trunk in relation to intercostal nerves may be one of the reasons that cause surgical failures. Therefore, our pr

PURPOSE: To compare the torsional stability of 6 fixation techniques for intercarpal fixation including a 4-tine, in-line staple.
METHODS: We chose the scapholunate interval as the test site for rotational stability for various constructs. We used 42 pairs of embalmed scaphoids and lunates for the comparisons and created 6 construct groups. Fixation of the scapholunate gap was performed with a 3-mm screw, 2 1.1-mm (0.045-inch) K-wires spaced 2 mm apart, or 2 1.1-mm K-wires spaced 5 mm apart. One member of each pair was fixed with either a standard 2-tine peripherally placed staple or a custom

The purpose of the present study was to provide precise data regarding the branching pattern of the submental artery, which should be considered in occasions of bleeding during various dentoalveolar surgical procedures of the mandible, such as implant surgeries, tori removal, and iatrogenic injuries. Twenty-six embalmed adult hemifaces from Korean cadavers were used in this study. The vertical distance, horizontal distance, and diameter of the submental artery were measured from the site of the first premolar to the third molar. In cases where there was penetration of the mylohyoid muscle by t

A combination of an aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) and a bicarotid trunk (BCT) appears in up to 2.5% of the population. The aim of this study is to report the higher total and male incidence of this variation in the literature and to summarise its clinical impact, providing useful knowledge to anatomists, radiologists, cardiologists, and vascular and thoracic surgeons in order to avoid diagnostic pitfalls and therapeutic complications. A total of 72 (43 female and 29 male) Greek Caucasian formalin-embalmed cadavers were studied. The international literature was reviewed along with the

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the technical feasibility of harvesting a vascularized bone graft from the acromion pedicled on the acromial branch.
BACKGROUND: Complex fractures of the proximal humerus may result in partial or total avascular necrosis of the head fragment. Treatment of avascular necrosis of the humeral head is dependent upon the stage of disease as well as the dimension and location of necrosis. In general, the outcome is poor and complete restoration of the shoulder function is rarely attained. Contrary to osteonecrosis of carpal bones (where vascularized bone grafts have been ro

Circulus arteriosus (Circle of Willis) is an anastomotic ring which unites the internal carotid and vertebrobasilar systems. It slows down the blood before it reaches the brain and helps in collateral circulation. Anatomic study reveals the variation in the pattern and calibre of vessels which make up the circulus arteriosus. The greatest variation in calibre occurs in the posterior communicating artery. The posterior cerebral artery is divided into three portions by the posterior communicating artery; these are- P1, P2, and P3. Three basic configurations of the posterior communicating artery

The pelvic autonomic nerves innervate the pelvic viscera, and carry a high risk of damage during surgery. This high risk has been ascribed to the complex interrelationship of pelvic paravisceral structures and the difficulty in identifying particular structures, despite the fact that the anatomic characteristics of the pelvic autonomic plexus have been well documented. We dissected ten male embalmed adult cadavers with particular attention to the quantitative parameters of the pelvic plexus and its subsidiary plexus. The right inferior hypogastric plexus and its rectal branch were found to be

BACKGROUND: In a previous study, ligaments that connect the extraforaminal lumbar spinal nerves with the fibrous capsule of the facet joints and the dorsolateral side of the intervertebral disc were described. This anatomical configuration suggests a mechanical role in transferring extraforaminal spinal nerve traction.
METHODS: One embalmed human lumbar spine was dissected from the twelfth thoracic vertebra to the first sacral vertebra to isolate the twelfth thoracic to the fourth lumbar spinal nerves. The spinal nerves from L1 to L4 were pulled at different angles with respect to the axis of
