[On the urgency of treating ophthalmic emergencies].

In emergencies in ophthalmology a distinction must be made between systemic emergency situations that manifest in the eye and purely ocular emergencies. The latter threaten vision to varying degrees and therefore require differentiated treatment and care by the ophthalmologist. This requires considerable responsibility and high expertise as all subdisciplines of ophthalmology can be affected. Due to demographic developments and other factors, the number of emergency patients is increasing, which requires adaptation in resources and clinical management of patients.

[ENT emergencies in general practice (part 1)].

ENT complaints are common in primary care, yet their assessment can be challenging. Their clinical evaluation requires a knowledge of anatomy, pathology, and differential diagnoses. The boundaries between benign conditions and those requiring specific treatment or specialist referral is sometimes unclear. A structured clinical reasoning process, combined with a few key references, helps avoid the most common pitfalls. This illustrated practical guide is designed to support primary care physicians in providing safe, pragmatic, and guideline-based management. This first part deals with infectiou

Life support in hemodialysis emergencies-treatment standard.

Hemodialysis removes uremic toxins and excess water and sodium from the blood of patients with kidney failure. For the last 60 years, this technique has been extensively improved in order to optimize patient survival and minimize adverse events. Indeed, life-threatening complications related to hemodialysis have become very rare with the use of modern machines and equipment. These hemodialysis-related serious events that became less frequent include hemolysis, air embolism, dialyzer reactions and dialysis disequilibrium syndrome. On the other hand, other medical emergencies are regularly encou…

ChatGPT's competence in responding to urological emergencies.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) applications have been increasingly used as sources of medical information, alongside their applications in many other fields. This study is the first to evaluate ChatGPT's performance in addressing urological emergencies (UE). METHODS: The study included frequently asked questions (FAQs) by the public regarding UE, as well as UE-related questions formulated based on the European Association of Urology (EAU) guidelines. The FAQs were selected from questions posed by patients to doctors and hospital accounts on social media platforms (F…

The use of angioembolization in urological emergencies.

INTRODUCTION: The genitourinary tract and retroperitoneal hemorrhage belong to severe and sometimes life-threatening urological emergencies. Interventional radiology methods can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality in patients who fail conservative treatment and are unfit for surgery. MATERIALS: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients indicated for angiography and vasographic intervention due to urological pathology in 2015-2020. The study focused on the etiology, technical, clinical success, and possible complications related to angioembolization. RESULTS: In 5 years, we r…

Assessment and management of emergencies during haemodialysis.

The haemodialysis unit is a complex clinical environment. Medical emergencies complicating haemodialysis treatment are relatively infrequent but are associated with high morbidity and mortality. The management of intradialytic emergencies is challenging and relevant to the practice of all nephrology and critical care clinicians. There are no dedicated resuscitation guidelines for this unique patient population. This review article provides an outline of the assessment and treatment of important intradialytic emergencies (hypotension, hypertension, haemorrhage, hypoxia, neurologic disturbances,…

[Management of ear, nose and throat emergencies].

Emergency situations involving the ears, nose, and throat (ENT) area can pose considerable challenges for clinicians and often require an interdisciplinary approach due to the involvement of different organ systems. To avoid damage to highly relevant sensory and perception organs and life-threatening bleeding or respiratory complications, strategies that are as quick and targeted as possible are necessary. This article aims to provide an overview of ENT emergency management strategies. The entire spectrum from simple conservative to highly complex surgical measures plays a role here, both diag

Neurological Emergencies in the Intensive Care Unit.

Neurological emergencies carry significant morbidity and mortality, and it is necessary to have a multidisciplinary approach involving the emergency physician, the neurologist, the intensivist, and the critical care nursing staff. These disorders can be broadly divided into noninfectious and infectious etiologies. In this article, we review a few of the neurological emergencies that present to the neurological intensive unit, with emphasis on convulsive status epileptics, myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, meningitis, encephalitis, and brain abscess.

Pediatric Respiratory Emergencies-Recognition, Approach, and Management.

This article reviews the current trends and management of respiratory emergencies in children. Respiratory emergencies are a common report in pediatrics and often require prompt recognition and intervention. It is important to differentiate upper from lower respiratory disease processes because the management is often different. With the advent of many vaccinations, the concern for certain diseases has changed with variations in the prevalence of other organisms. This article discusses detection and management of many respiratory emergencies. [Pediatr Ann. 2023;52(4):e146-e152.].

Legal and Ethical Considerations in Psychiatric Emergencies.

Individual rights can be limited in the context of psychiatric emergencies. The emergency physician should be familiar with state laws pertaining to involuntary holds. Physicians are equipped to perform a medical screening examination, address mental health concerns, and lead efforts to de-escalate agitation. The physician should conduct a thorough assessment and distinguish between malingering and mental health decompensation, when appropriate.

Gastrointestinal Emergencies in Neonates: A Review Article.

Numerous emergencies that are life-threatening might present in the newborn period of life. Thus, physicians need an in-depth understanding of such circumstances in order to treat critically ill neonates. Identification of these illnesses and choosing the appropriate course of action, which includes patient stabilization, differential diagnosis based on laboratory and imaging results, and well-guided therapy, are the responsibility of the emergency department staff. The most typical diagnoses in this kind of situation are severe bacterial infections, congenital heart illness, gastrointestinal …

Perioperative Emergencies: Who, What, When, Where, Why?

OBJECTIVE(S): Throughout the last several decades, the perioperative mortality rate from anesthesia care has declined, shifting focus to perioperative emergencies. Data on these emergencies, often referred to as "Anesthesia STAT" calls (STATs), are lacking at adult hospitals. The goal of this study was to determine the etiology of STATs at a major academic medical center and to determine surgical cases and patient comorbid conditions that increase the risk for STATs. DESIGN: This was a retrospective observational study. SETTING: This study took place at a large academic medical center. PART…

Role of imaging in visceral vascular emergencies.

Differential diagnosis in non-traumatic acute abdomen is broad and unrelated diseases may simulate each other from a clinical perspective. Despite the fact that they are not as common, acute abdominal pain due to diseases related to visceral vessels may be life-threating if not detected and treated promptly. Thrombosis, dissection, and aneurysm in the abdominal visceral arteries or thrombosis in visceral veins may cause acute abdominal pain. Imaging with appropriate protocoling plays a fundamental role in both early diagnosis and determination of the treatment approach in these cases where ear

[Emergencies in dermatology : From gonorrhea to angioedema].

The spectrum of dermatological emergencies is diverse. Infections, in particular sexually transmitted infections, anaphylactic reactions, and cutaneous drug reactions are common causes for patients to present themselves to the dermatological emergency service. If a sexually transmitted infection is suspected, it is important for the physician to recognize which diseases need immediate treatment to avoid late complications. This requires a reliable diagnosis and knowledge of the appropriate therapy. Cutaneous drug reactions can take many forms. There is a spectrum of reactions that occur immedi…

Common Pediatric Medical Emergencies in Office Practice.

General Practitioners frequently see children with medical conditions that may evolve into an emergency if not promptly attended to. The most common emergencies encountered in pediatric office practice are respiratory distress, dehydration, anaphylaxis, seizures and trauma. Assessment of children is sometimes difficult as the signs and symptoms might be subtle and not markedly expressed. Also, normal value of vital signs vary with age, thus their interpretation requires discrete knowledge of age appropriate values. Initial approach to a sick child involves formation of initial impression, doin…
