The presence of Enterococcus faecalis in saliva as a risk factor for endodontic infection.

AIM: The aim of the present study was to investigate and correlate the prevalence of Enterococcus faecalis in saliva and in root canals with different pulpal and periapical conditions. METHODOLOGY: Sixty-seven patients were divided into five groups based on pulpal and periapical tissue status: healthy vital teeth (HVT, n=7), healthy treated teeth without lesion (HTT, n=9), irreversible pulpitis (IP, n=13), necrosis (N, n=18), and post-treatment apical periodontitis (PTAP, n=20). Saliva, rubber dam, sterility control and pre-treatment root canal samples were collected and microbiologically pro

Endodontic therapy in patients with inherited bleeding disorders: a scoping review.

This systematic scoping review aimed to map available evidence regarding endodontic therapy in patients with inherited bleeding disorders (IBDs). Studies in medicine or dentistry were selected if they reported on endodontic therapy in individuals with IBDs such as hemophilia A, hemophilia B, or von Willebrand disease. Two independent researchers performed searches and screening in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. The search initially yielded 676 potentially relevant studies, 14 of which were included in the final analysis. Of these 14 studies, 3 were classi

Efficacy of antiseptics for rubber dam sterilization prior to endodontic treatment.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the efficacy of various antiseptics for disinfection of rubber dams used during endodontic treatment, the duration of disinfection effectiveness, and the disinfection protocol employed by dental schools in Thailand. METHODS: The efficacy of 10% povidone-iodine, 1.5% tincture iodine and 70% ethyl alcohol in eliminating Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) and Candida albicans (C. albicans) on the rubber dam was investigated. Time duration of disinfection was evaluated at 0, 30, 60, and 120 min. The two-step disinfection method adopted at Thai dental school was e

Single versus multiple visits for endodontic treatment of permanent teeth.

BACKGROUND: Root canal treatment (RoCT), or endodontic treatment, is a common procedure in dentistry. The main indications for RoCT are irreversible pulpitis and necrosis of the dental pulp caused by carious processes, coronal crack or fracture, or dental trauma. Successful RoCT is characterised by an absence of symptoms (i.e. pain) and clinical signs (i.e. swelling and sinus tract) in teeth without radiographic evidence of periodontal involvement (i.e. normal periodontal ligament). The success of RoCT depends on a number of variables related to the preoperative condition of the tooth, as well

Accidental ingestion of an endodontic file: A case report and literary review.

Ingestion and aspiration can be accidental or intentional events in both adults and children. Approximately 1500 people in the United States die from ingestion of foreign bodies annually. Patients with cognitive disabilities, neurological disorders, elderly age or incarcerated patients carry the highest risk of intentional and/or accidental ingestion of foreign objects. Although uncommon, ingestion of foreign objects during dental procedures can be potentially life-threatening and increased awareness is important. Sharp objects ingested from dental procedures can cause impaction, obstruction,

Antibiotic use in endodontic treatment during pregnancy: A narrative review.

More than half of pregnant women are usually affected by odontogenic pain affects. Pain often accompanies periapical or pulp infections and increases the risks to pregnant patients and their fetuses. The American Dental Association, in partnership with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, has offered a strong declaration reaffirming the significance of suitable and timely oral health care as an indispensable constituent of a healthy pregnancy. However, there is lack of knowledge about the use of antibiotics in endodontic treatment. Therefore, the present study would review

Synthesis, characterization, and evaluation of curcumin-loaded endodontic reparative material.

Curcumin (CUR) is an ancient therapeutic agent with remarkable antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. The purpose of the current study was to synthesize and evaluate a curcumin-based reparative endodontic material to reduce infection and inflammation besides the induction of mineralization during the healing of the dentin-pulp complex. Poly-ɛ-caprolactone (PCL)/gelatin (Gel)/CUR scaffold was synthesized and assessed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). Agar diffusion test was performed against E. coli, A. baum

Fungal species in endodontic infections: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Fungal infections are common on oral mucosae, but their role in other oral sites is ill defined. Over the last few decades, numerous studies have reported the presence of fungi, particularly Candida species in endodontic infections, albeit in relatively small numbers in comparison to its predominant anaerobic bacteriome. Here, we review the fungal biome of primary and secondary endodontic infections, with particular reference to the prevalence and behavior of Candida species. Meta-analysis of the available data from a total of 39 studies fitting the inclusion criteria, indicate the overall wei

Malignant Lesions Mimicking Endodontic Pathoses Lesion: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Malignant nonendodontic periapical lesions represent a rare diagnosis, in which few case have been reported about this condition. Due to the low occurrence and little exploration of this subject, serious errors of diagnosis are observed in the oral medicine services. In this sense, the purpose of the present review was to integrate the information on the record published on malignant lesions that mimic endodontic pathoses into a comprehensive analysis of their clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic features. METHODS: An online search was made in March 2020 in the following da

Quantitative Assessment of Mechanical Allodynia and Central Sensitization in Endodontic Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Patients seeking endodontic treatment commonly present with reduced mechanical pain thresholds (ie, mechanical allodynia [MA]) in the offending teeth. In patients with moderate to severe pain, MA may manifest in the teeth contralateral to the offending teeth because of the onset of central sensitization (CS). We hypothesize that there are quantitative differences in MA and CS in patients with different pulp and periradicular diagnoses. METHODS: Patients (n = 70) receiving endodontic treatment in the graduate endodontic clinic at the University of Texas Health Science Center at S

A CAD/CAM-based strategy for concurrent endodontic and restorative treatment.

This case report describes a technique in which endodontic treatment and permanent indirect restoration were completed in the same clinical appointment with the aid of a computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system. Two patients were diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis of the mandibular first molar. After access preparation, root canals were located, irrigation was performed until bleeding ceased, and the coronal tooth structure was prepared for indirect restoration. Then, utilizing an interim 3-mm build-up of the endodontic access cavity, a hemi-arch digital scan was p

Successful Management of Teeth with Different Types of Endodontic-Periodontal Lesions.

Endodontic-periodontal diseases often present great challenges to the clinician in their diagnosis, management, and prognosis. Understanding the disease process through cause-and-effect relationships between the pulp and supporting periodontal tissues with the aid of rational classifications leads to successful treatment outcomes. In this report, we present several treatment modalities in patients with different endodontic-periodontal lesions. A modification to the new endodontic-periodontic classification, Al-Fouzan's classification, was also added. The first case was classified as retrograde

Differentiating spontaneous vertical root fracture in endodontically treated tooth.

Although vertical root fracture (VRF) is mostly found in endodontically treated teeth, it also occurs spontaneously. If VRF is recognized after endodontic treatment, it is considered to be iatrogenic and can lead to legal trouble. However, legal problems can be averted if the dentist can prove that the VRF existed before endodontic treatment. This case report describes an unusual, spontaneous VRF in an endodontically treated tooth and presents a useful tip for determining whether a fracture is iatrogenic. We performed nonsurgical endodontic treatment on a mandibular first molar with irreversib
