Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) affects predominantly preterm infants, who have specific risk factors leading to intestinal dysbiosis. Manipulations of gut microbiota through probiotics have the potential to prevent NEC.The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effect of probiotics for NEC prevention in preterm infants, with a focus on specific strains, microbiological strength of currently available studies, and high-risk populations. PubMed and the Cochrane Library were searched for trials published within 4th February 2015. Randomized-controlled trials reportin

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is an acute neonatal inflammatory disease which may lead to intestinal necrosis, multisystem failure, and death. Currently, NEC is diagnosed by a combination of laboratory and radiographic tests conducted a posteriori i.e., when NEC is already clinically significant. Given the acute onset and rapid progression of NEC, a non-invasive biomarker that allows early detection of patients at risk is required as a matter of urgency. We evaluated whether the high frequency (HF) component of heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of vagal efferent tonic choli

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Probiotic therapy has been shown to reduce morbidity and mortality of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in premature infants in several international studies using various probiotic agents. The purpose of this study(*) is to describe our experience of using probiotic therapy in preventing NEC in infants with very low birth weight (VLBW) in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and to evaluate whether our records provide evidence of effectiveness for probiotic therapy.
METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study, the efficacy of probiotic therapy in preventing NEC in VL

BACKGROUND: Abdominal radiography is the reference standard in imaging neonates with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC); however, ultrasound of the abdomen including bowel may be of value in this setting.
OBJECTIVE: To correlate sonographic and radiographic findings with patient outcomes in NEC.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed sonographic and radiographic exams, as well as clinical, pathological and laboratory records. Ultrasound images were reviewed for free intraperitoneal gas, peritoneal fluid, pneumatosis intestinalis, portal gas, bowel vascularity, bowel wall thickness and echogenicity,

We present three cases of pre-term low-weight infants with suspected necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) [one eventually recognized as a connatal cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection], microbiologically monitored using a molecular assay detecting bacterial and fungal DNA in blood. The detection of DNA from enteric pathogens in blood was interpreted as a sign of ongoing perforation, and represented a useful complement in the management of the presented cases. Moreover, these cases suggest the opportunity for larger future studies to assess the possible role of a molecular approach in the close monitorin

OBJECTIVES: CD40, a co-stimulatory molecule, plays a critical role in coordinating enteric inflammatory immune responses. In necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), upregulation of IL-10, a CD40-modulated cytokine, has been described, but the role of the IL-10 receptor (IL-10Rβ), CD40, and its ligand CD40L in disease pathogenesis is unknown. The study herein investigates ileal expression of CD40, CD40L, and IL-10R in a rat model of NEC.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: NEC was induced in newborn rats using established methods of formula feeding, asphyxia, and cold stress. Expression of CD40, CD40L, IL-10Rβ, an

BACKGROUND: Novel antidepressant drugs are increasingly used by women of child bearing age. However, potentially harmful effects on fetus and newborn remain unknown.
METHODS: Case report and literature review.
RESULTS: We present preterm twins whose mother was treated with venlafaxine, a nonselective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, throughout pregnancy until delivery. The twins developed neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis.
CONCLUSION: The question whether there might be a correlation between maternal serotonin reuptake inhibitor therapy and neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis is discussed.

Necrotizing enterocolitis is a rare and severe complication of Hischsprung's disease. Aggravation of unknown or undertreated Hischsprung's disease may be seen during pregnancy. To our knowledge, the following case is the first combining those two elements: necrotizing enterocolitis in a 20 years old women operated on of Hischsprung's disease when she was six months. The final diagnosis was made 24 hours later. Definitive treatment was a three-stage ileal pouch-anal anastomosis.

As a direct consequence of the sophisticated arrangement of its intrinsic neurons, the gastrointestinal tract is unique among peripheral organs, in its ability to mediate its own reflexes. Neurons of the enteric nervous system are intimately associated with enteric glial cells. These supporting cells do not resemble Schwann cells, the glial cell found in all other parts of the peripheral nervous system, but share many similarities with astrocytes of the central nervous system. Ablation of enteric glial cells in adult transgenic mice has demonstrated that these cells are essential to maintain t

A 68-year-old male diagnosed as carcinoma of the sigmoid colon developed shock and cardiac arrest just 8 hours after the onset of ielus. After resuscitation, exploratory laparotomy was carried out and it revealed gangrene spreading from the sigmoid colon over the distal 150cm of the terminal ileum, separated from the carcinoma by a normal segment of the colon 13cm in length. All the mesenteric vessels were pulsating normally. The whole necrotic lesion including the carcinoma was resected and an ileostomy was constructed. This is a noteworthy report of severe obstructive necrotizing enterocolit

Per anal balloon dilatation of a sigmoid colon stricture caused by necrotizing enterocolitis allowed identification of a more proximal lesion which would otherwise have gone radiographically undetected. Repeated dilatations at two weeks and four weeks following the initial dilatation of the stricture resulted in relief of the stricture and obviated the need for surgical treatment of this lesion.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a common gastrointestinal disease in newborns, with insidious onset, rapid progression, and severe complications. Although abdominal X-ray examination is the standard method for diagnosing NEC, it has the disadvantages of difficulty in early diagnosis and a low positive detection rate. With the development of ultrasound technology, it has advantages such as non-radiation and dynamic, repeatable examination, and is increasingly being applied in the diagnosis of NEC.

Hybrid stage 1 palliation (HS1P) is performed at many centers for patients with single ventricle heart disease or complex biventricular heart disease and high-risk features. Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is common in these infants, although specific risk factors have not been identified to predict those who will develop NEC. A single-center retrospective chart review of 105 infants who underwent HS1P at < 30 days of age was performed. Clinical, procedural, and echocardiographic features at HS1P and prior to NEC episodes were collected. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome accounted for 54.3% of p

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) remains one of the most devastating gastrointestinal disorders affecting preterm infants, with substantial mortality and long-term morbidity despite advances in neonatal care. Increasing evidence implicates intestinal dysbiosis, impaired intestinal barrier function, and dysregulated immune responses as central drivers of NEC pathogenesis, making microbiome-targeted interventions a promising preventive strategy. Collectively termed "biotics," these interventions include probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and postbiotics, each aimed at modulating the developing g

We report a case of multiple liver abscesses after necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), which were successfully detected by ultrasound screening and treated successfully. This baby was not premature but had truncus arteriosus and was at risk of NEC. NEC developed on day 7, and abdominal drainage, bowel resection, and enterostomy were performed on day 12. The postoperative clinical course and laboratory data were uneventful. However, abdominal ultrasound screening, which was performed to check for any postoperative complications, revealed multiple liver abscesses on postoperative day 14. Contrast-e

Osteopontin (OPN) is a multifunctional milk protein with various potential health benefits. However, studies on the role of OPN during early life are still very limited. This study employed a neonatal rat model to investigate the protective effects of milk OPN against necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a devastating gastrointestinal disease leading high morbidity and mortality in infants. In NEC-affected rat pups, milk OPN enhanced the survival rates, and alleviated the ileum tissue damage. Immunofluorescence staining revealed that milk OPN significantly promoted intestinal cell proliferation an
