Environmental factors in haemopoietic failure in humans.

Aplastic anaemia can be defined as pancytopenia in the presence of a hypoplastic bone marrow and in the absence of leukaemia or malignant infiltration. Most cases have been attributed to an intrinsic defect in the pluripotential haemopoietic stem cell; however, stem cell suppression or a defect in the marrow environment would also produce the symptoms of aplasia. In vitro culture systems have been used to explore these possibilities and have provided evidence that the syndrome known as aplastic anaemia includes several distinct disease processes. These include primary failure of the haemopoiet

Studies in the behavioral toxicology of environmental contaminants.

Behavioral toxicology represents a relatively new research area in the West, and a new source of information pertinent to standard setting. Despite this abbreviated history, however, it can call on a rather advanced technology, largely provided by the rapid and extensive development of behavioral pharmacology during the past two decades. As exemplified by the U.S. contribution to the joint study of carbon disulfide, the approach derived from this background relies on the acquisition of dose--effect data with a preparation yielding stable baseline performance. The first study in this collaborat

Environmental stress and thyrotoxicosis. Absence of association.

The incidence of treated thyrotoxicosis in Northern Ireland has been estimated by the technique of "therapeutic auditing" for the periods (a) three years preceeding the start of the present civil unrest and (b) the ensuing three years. No change in incidence was found, which supports the concept that environmental stress is not important in the pathogenesis of this disease.

Allergenicity of piperazine: a study in environmental aetiology.

This paper reports an apparent biological difference between two otherwise identical preparations of piperazine hexahydrate. It reports the cutaneous irritancy and allergenicity of this substance and records the effect of environmental temperature on those properties, particularly the former. Finally, it reports severe, delayed asthma-like response to piperazine exposure. Interrogation of companies engaged in the manufacture of the substance revealed that the unwelcome effects reported here have quite commonly affected workers in the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, South Africa, and

Tire-Derived Microplastics as Chemically Complex Environmental Contaminants: Mechanistic Pathways, Exposure Gradients, and Implications for Environmental Health.

Tire-derived microplastics (TWPs) are now recognized as one of the largest and most persistent sources of environmental micro- and nanoplastic pollution, yet their implications for human health remain incompletely characterized. TWPs contain complex mixtures of synthetic polymers, metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, plasticizers, antioxidants, and transformation products such as 6PPD-quinone. These constituents exhibit chemical reactivity and biological activity relevant to oxidative stress, endothelial injury, inflammation, immune perturbation, and metabolic disruption-processes increas
