Epidemiological features of meningococcal disease described as from the second half of the 80's inclusive, have motivated a revision of current guidelines for sporadic disease and outbreak control. The increase of disease among teenagers and linked cases involving schools are the two most significant aspects that have prompted the revision of control measures. Vaccination routines and advice for the disease management of clusters are also relevant features recently revised. BACKGROUND: Shigellosis, also known as bacillary dysentery, is a contagious and infectious disease. In the European Union, on the basis of the Commission Decision of 2 April 2009 and the Commission Decision of 28 April 2008, a unified system for collecting epidemiological data on infectious diseases was introduced, including shigellosis. This makes it possible to compare data collected at different times and in different countries.

We report epidemiological and clinical aspects of an outbreak of louse-borne relapsing fever (LBRF) in Asella in Arsi Zone, central Ethiopia, from July to November 2016. A total of 63 LBRF cases were reported. The overall case fatality rate was 13% among treated patients. In this article, the first-line epidemiological assessment, individual prevention and control measures, and public health investigations and interventions in relation to this outbreak are described. Treatment recommendations for resource-limited settings are discussed by review of the latest literature.

Listerial keratoconjunctivitis or silage eye has increasingly been reported in ruminants in recent years. Although the disease has always been associated with silage feeding, its cause, pathogenesis, and epidemiology remain to be fully disclosed. Clinical courses include signs of keratoconjunctivitis and uveitis and cases recover without any residual lesions after antibiotic therapy. More epidemiologic and clinical as well as experimental studies are required to determine this poorly defined condition so that preventive measures could be established.
