OBJECTIVE: Analyze the postoperative clinical and radiographic results of children under 10 years of age with slipped proximal femoral epiphysis and determine the differences compared to other age groups.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective study with a minimum follow-up of 2 years; Southwick's angle, treatment, and the rate of contralateral slip were all assessed. The Iowa scale was used for assessment purposes.
RESULTS: A total of 18 patients and 23 hips were reported (5 cases were bilateral), mean age was 8.53 years, and Southwick's angle was 43 degrees. All cases were treated with in sit

Traumatic hip dislocation is an uncommon injury in children. The urgency of closed reduction to prevent possible osteonecrosis may present some pitfalls. Adolescents with open proximal femoral physis may have sustained trauma to the physis at the time of dislocation that can lead to displacement of the epiphysis during the reduction maneuver. The purpose of this study is to report 5 cases with this complication and discuss potential etiology and management. All of the 5 patients were between 12 and 16 years old and underwent closed reduction under conscious sedation. Epiphysiolysis of the femo

Monozygotic twins with Turner syndrome have rarely been reported. An increased incidence of slipped capital femoral epiphysis has been associated with growth hormone therapy, as well as with Turner syndrome, but has never been described in twins with Turner syndrome. We report the first case of monozygotic twins with Turner syndrome with a 46,Xi(Xq) karyotype, both of whom developed slipped capital femoral epiphysis during growth hormone therapy. This report adds to existing reports of monozygotic twins with Turner syndrome and contributes to recognition of the potential clinical course in suc

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis typically occurs in adolescents. Presentation may include limp or vague pain in the hip, thigh or knee. Knee pain, in particular, is a common complaint among adolescents and may be due to patello-femoral syndromes, Osgood-Schlatter disease, patellar tendonitis, or chondromalacia patella, to name a few. However, it is vital to remember that the complaint of knee pain may be present because of referred pain from pathology at the hip. Every child presenting with a complaint of hip, thigh or knee pain must undergo a hip examination. Likewise, a "groin pull" is exc

A rare case of a 12-year-old boy on whom a joint-preserving operation for osteonecrosis after slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) was performed, is described. Firstly, in situ pinning was performed for acute-on-chronic SCFE. However, osteonecrosis and collapse of the femoral head occurred at 7 months after surgery. Secondly, transtrochanteric rotational osteotomy (TRO) was performed against progression of the collapse of the femoral head. Eight years of X-ray observation revealed bone remodeling at the osteonecrotic region. No documentation has been reported about the potential of bone re

OBJECTIVE: Delay in diagnosis of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) has important implications in terms of slip severity and long-term hip outcome. The purpose of this study was to identify predictors of delay in the diagnosis of SCFE.
METHODS: A review of 196 patients with SCFE was performed. The primary outcome measure was delay from onset of symptoms to diagnosis. Covariates included age, gender, side, weight, pain location, insurance status, family income, slip severity, and slip stability. Delay in diagnosis was not normal in distribution; therefore, nonparametric univariate and mu

BACKGROUND: The risk of a contralateral slip in patients who are first seen with a unilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis has been reported to be 2335 times higher than the risk of an initial slip. The overall prevalence of bilaterality varies widely throughout the literature, with some reports indicating rates as high as 80%. This finding has led many authors to recommend prophylactic pinning of the contralateral asymptomatic hip in patients presenting with a unilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis.
METHODS: A decision analysis model with probabilities for the occurrence of contra

INTRODUCTION: Early slipped capital femoral epiphysis (ESCFE) can be treated surgically, with excellent results, if it is diagnosed in its initial stage; however, the rate of late or missed diagnoses remains surprisingly high.
PURPOSE: We compared radiography, US and MR sensitivity in ESCFE diagnosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We examined 21 symptomatic overweight patients (15 boys and 6 girls) aged 9 to 15 years with anteroposterior radiographs; frog leg images were not acquired in 3 cases only. US was performed in 19 cases and the images acquired with 5-7.5 MHz probes on the sagittal plane par

From January 1982 to December 1987, 114 hips of 80 patients underwent pinning for treatment of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). Three groups were differentiated based on the number of pins used. The average length of follow-up was 2 years 5 months. The mean time to physeal closure was 5.43 months in the single pin group, 5.54 months in the two pin group, and 6.44 months in the three or more pin group. These differences were not statistically significant. There was a statistically significant decrease in the rate of pin-related complications and reoperations in the single pin group as

A significant association between slipped upper femoral epiphysis (SCFE) and subtalar arthritis causes peroneal spastic flatfoot. Three patients with this association were observed in 136 cases of SCFE, an incidence of 2.3%; the anticipated incidence would be 0.4%. We postulate that both conditions reflect an underlying immunologic disorder.

In a rare case of progressive bilateral valgus-slipped capital femoral epiphysis, modified Imhauser-Weber osteotomies were carried out. The osteotomies allowed for significant varus correction and thus included shortening of the neck and distal transfer of the greater trochanter. The planning technique of the complex osteotomy is discussed. At 5-year follow-up the patient had a gratifying result.

In the offspring of a sow suffering from epiphyseolysis a unilateral and bilateral epiphyseolysis occurred associated with high energy food and also partly due to low mineral food in 4 out of 7 piglets. A further animal showed apophyseolysis. Compared to the normal piglets there was no difference observed concerning the parameter of the bone metabolism (Ca, P, alk. phosphatase) and the size of angles between shaft and neck of the femur. Serial X-ray examinations revealed osteolytic changes in the cortex of the femur neck, starting before epiphyseolysis was evident and which could be proved to

Authors studied 53 cases of slipped upper femoral epiphysis. They analyse principally the result of the surgical treatment. They find 15% of bad results due essentially to therapeutic errors leading to chondrolysis and necrosis. Extra-articular fixation by two screws is the treatment of choice in most cases. Intra-articular fixation, Howorth procedure, gives good result when screwing is impossible. Orthopedic reduction is banned in gradual slipping, but is considered as good solution in acute slipping. When the deplacement considered as good solution in acute slipping. When the deplacement is

Eleven cases of slipped upper femoral epiphysis have been corrected and fixed, using Dunn's technique. Seven were chronic slips and four were acute slips with severe displacement. The children were aged between 11 and 15 years. The displacement was measured on lateral radiographs of the femoral neck and was type II in the acute cases and type III in chronic cases, ranging between 50 degrees and the maximum possible displacement. Acute cases were operated on between 2 and 15 days following the onset of the condition, and chronic cases were operated on between 2 and 14 months following the onset
