Effect of pimobendan or benazepril hydrochloride on survival times in dogs with congestive heart failure caused by naturally occurring myxomatous mitral valve disease: the QUEST study.

BACKGROUND: Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) continues to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality in geriatric dogs despite conventional therapy. HYPOTHESIS: Pimobendan in addition to conventional therapy will extend time to sudden cardiac death, euthanasia for cardiac reasons, or treatment failure when compared with conventional therapy plus benazepril in dogs with congestive heart failure (CHF) attributable to MMVD. ANIMALS: Two hundred and sixty client-owned dogs in CHF caused by MMVD were recruited from 28 centers in Europe, Canada, and Australia. METHODS: A prospective s

A comparative pathological study on granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis and central malignant histiocytosis in dogs.

Histiocytic proliferative disorders in canine central nervous system (CNS) including granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis (GME) and malignant histiocytosis were compared pathologically. Lesions of GME mainly existed in the white matter of the cerebrum, brainstem and cerebellum and consisted of characteristic perivascular cuffing, parenchymal granuloma and leptomeningeal infiltrates of mononuclear cells. In malignant histiocytosis, there were two histological patterns, diffuse proliferation of neoplastic histiocytes through the leptomeninges and neoplastic nodule formation in the parenchyma.

Evaluation of Oral Transmucosal Administration of Pentobarbital for Euthanasia of Conscious Wild Birds.

This prospective study evaluated oral transmucosal pentobarbital sodium at three doses in 110 wild-caught wild birds requiring euthanasia. Birds received transmucosal pentobarbital at five (430 mg/kg), six (516 mg/kg), and seven times (602 mg/kg) the intravenous dose for mammals. Time to first effects and loss of consciousness, presence of pupillary light and corneal reflexes, apnea, and asystole were recorded each minute. When asystole was not achieved at 5 minutes, IV pentobarbital was administered. Combining data for all doses, loss of consciousness occurred at a median (range) of 2 minutes

Pathological consequences of low atmospheric pressure stunning in broiler chickens.

Low atmospheric pressure stunning (LAPS) is a novel approach to pre-slaughter stunning of chickens using progressive hypobaric hypoxia by the application of gradual decompression (280s cycle) according to a set of prescribed pressure curves. Low atmospheric pressure stunning produces a non-recovery state. Concerns have been raised relating to the possible pathological and welfare consequences of expansion of air in the body during LAPS. In a randomised trial, we compared the gross pathology of broilers exposed to LAPS with a control group euthanised by intravenous injection of pentobarbital so

Amputation for histiocytic sarcoma in a cat.

A 9-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat presented with a skin lesion of the left tarsus. The lesion was biopsied and, based on the microscopic appearance and immunohistochemical characteristics, histiocytic sarcoma was diagnosed. Amputation was performed with improved demeanor seen postoperatively. However, between 44 and 60 days following the surgery, relapse of skin lesions appeared in multiple locations, including at the previous amputation site, and euthanasia was elected. This is the first report of a histiocytic sarcoma treated with amputation in a cat.

Ectoparasitic dermatitis in free-ranging swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor) in New South Wales.

We report extensive dermatological lesions in three, free-ranging, adult, male swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor), presented to Taronga Western Plains Zoo wildlife hospital. All three animals were moderately infested with the louse species Heterodoxus ualabati, and two were concurrently infested with a previously undescribed sarcoptiform mite of the genus Diabolicoptes. Histological changes included moderate to marked compact hyperkeratosis, focal deep pyoderma and superficial dermatophytosis. Mild to moderate hyperplastic perivascular and periadnexal dermatitis with marked superficial and fol

Gas gangrene caused by Clostridium chauvoei in suckling piglets.

Clostridium chauvoei is an anaerobic bacterium, widespread in the environment, and one of the causes of gas gangrene in animals. We describe an outbreak of gas gangrene in 1- to 3-day-old suckling piglets in a commercial farrowing farm caused by C. chauvoei. Twenty-five litters were affected, resulting in 30 deaths and a ~1% increase in preweaning mortality. Affected piglets had lethargy; fever; anorexia; and purple discoloration of the abdomen, head, and limbs. Without intervention, the disease progressed to death or required euthanasia within 24 hours. Gross and microscopic findings included

Spontaneous rupture of the right aortic sinus resulting in a sterile aorto-atrial fistula in a pet rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

Aortocardiac fistula is a broad term used to describe defects between the aorta and other cardiac chambers that can occur in humans and animals. A 1.5-year-old, 1.7 kg, male castrated Holland lop rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was presented for a two-week history of a heart murmur with corresponding cardiomegaly on radiographs. Physical examination confirmed a grade-V/VI continuous heart murmur on the right sternal border with a regular rhythm and a gallop sound. Echocardiography revealed an aortic-to-right-atrial fistula causing severe left-sided volume overload. Based on the echocardiographi

Nociceptive and histomorphometric evaluation of neural mobilization in experimental injury of the median nerve.

The carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common peripheral neuropathy in the upper limb, but its treatment with conservative therapies such as neural mobilization (NM) is still controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of the NM as treatment in a model of median nerve compression. 18 Wistar rats were subjected to compression of the median nerve in the right elbow proximal region. Were randomly divided into G1 (untreated), G2 (NM for 1 minute), and G3 (NM for 3 minutes). For treatment, the animals were anesthetized and the right forelimb received mobilization adapted to

Cryptosporidium sp.-associated enteritis without gastritis in rough green snakes (Opheodrys aestivus) and a common garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis).

An epizootic of severe Cryptosporidium sp.-associated enteritis occurred in a group of 15 wild-caught juvenile rough green snakes (Opheodrys aestivus) at the Baltimore Zoo quarantine facility. All of the animals died with no premonitory signs. Histopathologic examination of the small and proximal large intestine of eight of the green snakes showed moderate to severe Cryptosporidium sp. infection and enteritis characterized by dense heterophilic and lymphocytic inflammatory infiltrates throughout the lamina propria with epithelial necrosis. Cryptosporidium sp. was also found in feces of an adul

Durable contraception in the female domestic cat using viral-vectored delivery of a feline anti-Müllerian hormone transgene.

Eighty percent of the estimated 600 million domestic cats in the world are free-roaming. These cats typically experience suboptimal welfare and inflict high levels of predation on wildlife. Additionally, euthanasia of healthy animals in overpopulated shelters raises ethical considerations. While surgical sterilization is the mainstay of pet population control, there is a need for efficient, safe, and cost-effective permanent contraception alternatives. Herein, we report evidence that a single intramuscular treatment with an adeno-associated viral vector delivering an anti-Müllerian hormone tra

An Experimental Dermal Oedema Model for Apx Toxins of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae.

In-vivo models of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (App) infection in pigs are required for the development of vaccines and investigations of pathogenicity. Existing models cause severe respiratory disease with pulmonary oedema, dyspnoea and severe thoracic pain, and careful monitoring and early intervention with euthanasia is, therefore, needed to avoid unnecessary suffering in experimental animals. As a potential replacement for the existing respiratory infection model, an in-vivo protocol was evaluated using intradermal or subcutaneous injection of different App strains and Apx toxins into t

Diverse types of epineural conduits for bridging short nerve defects. An experimental study in the rabbit.

In this study the process of peripheral nerve regeneration through an epineural flap conduit was examined using four groups of 126 New Zealand rabbits. There were three study groups (A, B, and C) and 1 control group (D). A 10-mm long sciatic nerve defect was bridged either with 3 variations of an epineural flap (Groups A, B, and C) or with a nerve autograft (Group D). Animals from all groups were examined 21, 42, and 91 days postoperatively to evaluate nerve regeneration employing light microscopy and immunocytochemistry. Nerve regeneration was studied in transverse sections at 3, 6, and 9 mm

Technical Note: Validation of the effectiveness of electric stunning for euthanasia of mature swine (Sus scrofa domesticus).

Electrocution and the use of a penetrating captive bolt gun (PCBG) are both acceptable methods of euthanasia for market weight swine. Research has demonstrated that a PCBG is effective in both growing and mature swine. Given limited to no published research base on electrocution in mature swine, the objectives of the present study were to evaluate the efficacy of a two-stage (head only followed by head to heart, 10 s contact for each) mobile electric stunner (E-STUN, Hubert HAAS TBG 96N) and to assess euthanasia outcomes when comparing E-STUN with the frontal placement of a heavy-duty PCBG (Ja

Translational insights into canine dorsal root ganglia cell types using cross-species comparisons.

Chronic pain accounts for nearly half of owner-reported canine euthanasia decisions, yet dogs remain underutilized as a large-animal model for studying pain and developing translational therapeutics. Here, we present a canine dorsal root ganglion (DRG) cell atlas generated from six donors, representing five breeds, both sexes, and three spinal segments. Our dataset comprises 3,026 neurons and 11,734 non-neuronal cells and resolves 15 neuronal subtypes that map cleanly onto A- and C-fiber classes. We further identify eight major non-neuronal subtypes, including glial, vascular, and immune popul

Is the Activity-Based Anorexia Model a Reliable Method of Presenting Peripheral Clinical Features of Anorexia Nervosa?

Anorexia nervosa (AN) causes the highest number of deaths among all psychiatric disorders. Reduction in food intake and hyperactivity/increased anxiety observed in AN are also the core features of the activity-based anorexia animal model (ABA). Our aim was to assess how the acute ABA protocol mimics common AN complications, including gonadal and cardiovascular dysfunctions, depending on gender, age, and initial body weight, to form a comprehensive description of ABA as a reliable research tool. Wheel running, body weight, and food intake of adolescent female and male rats were monitored. Elect
