Parietal P3 and midfrontal theta prospectively predict the development of adolescent alcohol use.

BACKGROUND: Subclinical adolescent alcohol use is highly prevalent and may have deleterious effects on important psychosocial and brain outcomes. Prior research has focused on identifying endophenotypes of pathological drinking, and the predictors of normative drinking remain understudied. This study investigated the incremental predictive value of two potential psychophysiological endophenotypes, P3 amplitude (an index of decision making) and midfrontal theta power (a correlate of attentional control), for prospectively predicting the expression and initiation of alcohol use emerging in adole

Athletes versus video game players: A predictive contextual processing study.

We investigated the effect of abstract and real life meaningful images from sports on predictive contextual processing in professional athletes and video gamers. EEG was recorded in three groups: professional basketball players (BP), professional athletes of individual sports (IA) and experienced action video game players (VG). Two recording sessions, each with a different set of visual stimuli was presented: either triangles facing left, up, right or down or four images of a basketball player throwing a ball. Recording blocks consisted of targets preceded by randomized sequences of standards

Syntactic processing of Hebrew sentences in normal and dyslexic readers: electrophysiological evidence.

The authors examined differences in brain activity as measured by amplitudes and latencies of event-related potential (ERP) components in Hebrew-speaking adult dyslexic and normal readers. The participants were measured while processing words' syntactic functions during reading of sentences with subject-verb-object syntactic order. The results suggested that among dyslexic and normal readers, N100 and P300 ERP components were sensitive to certain constituents of syntactic analysis for target words in accordance with their grammatical roles. The findings further demonstrated significant differe

Auditory brain-stem responses (ABRs) in sleep respiratory disorders.

Neurophysiological repercussions of sleep respiratory disorders (SRDs) are still unclear. It has been shown that SRDs induce disturbance on auditory event-related potentials with a delayed latency of the cognitive P300 potentials. Since the Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABRs) explore the auditory brainstem structures and are independent on cognition, we evaluated the neurological impact of SDRs on central nervous system by ABRs in these patients. Four groups of patients were studied: snorers (S, 17 subjects), sleep apnoea syndrome (SAS, 48 subjects), apnoeic patients with respiratory insuffici

Acute tai chi practice and emotional stimulus processing in adults with and without tai chi experience: An ERP study.

Tai Chi combines coordinated movement, breathing regulation, and sustained attention. It remains unclear whether prior Tai Chi experience is associated with different immediate neural responses to picture stimuli after a shared practice session. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while 39 healthy adults viewed high-arousal negative and neutral pictures from the Chinese Affective Picture System before and after a 30-min simplified Tai Chi session. Negative pictures were also the low-probability stimuli. Seventeen participants had at least 1 year of Tai Chi experience and 22 had no pr

Ayahuasca-inspired DMT/HAR formulation reduces brain differentiation between self and other faces.

BACKGROUND: Psychedelics are known to profoundly alter perception and self-referential processing, yet their specific effects on face recognition -particularly with regard to the recognition of face familiarity-remain underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the effects of an ayahuasca-inspired novel DMT/HAR (N,N-dimethyltryptamine/Harmine) formulation and Harmine alone on face recognition and self-referential processing, as measured by event-related potentials (ERPs) and subjective behavioral measures. METHODS: In a within-subject, double-blind, placebo-controlled design, 30 health

Cognitive processing of orientation discrimination in anisometropic amblyopia.

Cognition is very important in our daily life. However, amblyopia has abnormal visual cognition. Physiological changes of the brain during processes of cognition could be reflected with ERPs. So the purpose of this study was to investigate the speed and the capacity of resource allocation in visual cognitive processing in orientation discrimination task during monocular and binocular viewing conditions of amblyopia and normal control as well as the corresponding eyes of the two groups with ERPs. We also sought to investigate whether the speed and the capacity of resource allocation in visual c

No Single Best Pipeline: Multiverse Analysis of EEG Preprocessing for N-Back Working Memory Tasks.

Working memory (WM) involves temporary information maintenance and manipulation, widely assessed using n-back tasks. This study systematically compared forty-three electroencephalography (EEG) preprocessing pipelines, varying in high-pass filtering, low-pass filtering, Independent Component Analysis, and re-referencing methods, to evaluate their impact on event-related potentials (ERP) during the n-back (2-back and 3-back) task across three previously published datasets with a total of 164 participants. The primary outcome was ERP data quality of the P300 measured at the Pz across preprocessin

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) Modulates Event-Related Potential (ERP) Indices of Attention in Autism.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have previously been shown to have significantly augmented and prolonged event-related potentials (ERP) to irrelevant visual stimuli compared to controls at both early and later stages (e.g., N200, P300) of visual processing and evidence of an overall lack of stimulus discrimination. Abnormally large and indiscriminative cortical responses to sensory stimuli may reflect cortical inhibitory deficits and a disruption in the excitation/inhibition ratio. Low-frequency (≤1HZ) repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been shown to increa

Investigating the Effect of Cognitive Rehabilitation on Cognitive Impairment Associated With Antiseizure Medications in Patients With Epilepsy.

ObjectiveMost existing studies on cognitive rehabilitation in epilepsy focus on patients undergoing epilepsy surgery or classify interventions based on epilepsy type. This study aimed to determine whether antiseizure medications (ASMs) cause cognitive dysfunction in epilepsy patients by using neuropsychological assessments and auditory event-related potentials (ERPs), and whether cognitive rehabilitation can reduce this potential impact.Materials and MethodsThe study included patients scheduled to begin ASM monotherapy. All participants first underwent a face-to-face Montreal Cognitive Assessm

Empathy in electrodermal responsive and nonresponsive patients with schizophrenia.

Skin conductance response (SCR) to emotion-evoking stimuli has in previous studies suggested the existence of two subgroups of schizophrenia patients. One is characterized by absent SCR and the other by heightened or non-habituating SCR. These subgroups have also been shown to differ in symptoms, prognosis and social integration. The present project compared social cognition in the two subgroups. SCR from 28 patients with schizophrenia and 24 matched healthy controls was measured while they watched emotion-evoking and neutral video tapes. Assessments of symptoms, neurocognition, social cogniti

A double-blind HD-tDCS/EEG study examining right temporoparietal junction involvement in facial emotion processing.

Prior studies have demonstrated that aspects of social cognition can be modulated via temporoparietal junction (TPJ) transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). However, this technique lacks focality and electrophysiological effects or correlates are rarely examined. The present study investigated whether anodal and/or cathodal high-definition tDCS (HD-tDCS) would influence facial emotion processing performance relative to sham stimulation, and whether task performance changes were related to neurophysiological changes. Participants completed a facial emotion attribution tasks before and a

Different cortical source activation patterns in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder during a time reproduction task.

Several neurocognitive studies have indicated that children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) exhibit cognitive deficits in perceptual timing functions; however, only a few electroencephalographic studies have investigated their time reproduction abilities. In the present research, 15 children with ADHD were studied along with 19 age-matched control subjects (aged 7-11 years) as they attempted to reproduce shorter (1000 ms) and longer (2200 ms) time intervals. Trial-mean event-related potential (ERP) and event-related spectral perturbation measures were used to compare the e

Differences in Children and Adolescents with Depression before and after a Remediation Program: An Event-Related Potential Study.

Depression is clinically diagnosed when a defined constellation of symptoms manifests over a specific duration with notable severity. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is characterized by the presence of five or more symptoms persisting for at least two weeks. As a profound mental health condition affecting millions globally, depression presents a considerable challenge for researchers and clinicians alike. In pediatric and adolescent populations, depression can precipitate adverse outcomes, including

Reward processing in certain versus uncertain contexts in schizophrenia: An event-related potential (ERP) study.

Disturbances in motivation are prominent in the clinical presentation of people with schizophrenia and might reflect a disturbance in reward processing. Recent advances in affective neuroscience have subdivided reward processing into distinct components, but there are two limitations of the prior work in schizophrenia. First, studies typically focus on only one component rather than on the unfolding of reward processing across multiple stages. Second, studies have not considered the impact of certainty effects, which represent an important contextual factor that impacts processing. We examined

Discriminating neurological from psychiatric hypersomnia using the forced awakening test.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep inertia refers to the inability to attain full alertness following awakening from sleep and is a major component of hypersomnia. As event-related potentials (ERPs) are correlated to the degree of consciousness, they allow exploring information processing in transitional states of vigilance. Their modifications during forced awakening (FA) context have been shown to reflect sleep inertia. OBJECTIVES: To assess the diagnostic value of a FA test using an oddball stimulation protocol during a nap in a representative sample of patients with excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS).

Time Course of Electrocortical Processing of Food Stimuli in Adolescent Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) typically manifests during adolescence and is linked to significant psychological and physical sequelae. A better understanding of the underlying maintenance mechanisms of adolescent AN is therefore crucial. Cognitive behavioral theories emphasize the influence of cognitive biases in the processing of disorder-relevant stimuli. METHOD: The current study investigated attentional bias to high- and low-calorie food in female adolescents with AN (n = 31) and without AN (n = 35). An event-related potentials study utilizing prolonged stimulus presentation in an atte

[Assessment of the brain functional state in pathological gamblers with a complex of neurophysiological methods].

A diagnosis of pathological gambling met ICD-10 and DSM-IV criteria. Based on the electroencephalographic data, two types of disturbances of electric activity were singled out: (1) abnormalities of amplitude and frequency characteristics of alpha-rhythm and (2) the disturbance of mechanisms of synchronized slow waves generating associated with the alpha-rhythm abnormalities. Despite the fact that patients did not abuse drugs, they had changes similar to those in drug addicts, i.e. the increase of index and power of beta-rhythm, abnormalities of amplitude and frequency characteristics of alpha-
