SCOPE AND PURPOSE: The aim of this guidance is to support the dental team to; manage patients with periodontal diseases in primary care appropriately; improve the quality of decision making for referral to secondary care; improve the overall oral health of the population. It focuses on the prevention and non-surgical treatment of periodontal diseases and implant diseases in primary care. The surgical treatment of periodontal and implant diseases and the management of patients by periodontal specialists or in a secondary care setting are outwith the scope of this guidance and are not discussed

INTERVENTION: Children aged three to eight years, with at least one molar with an acute, deep carious lesion into the dentine were recruited. Treatment took place under rubber dam with decayed dentine being removed completely from the lateral walls of cavities in both groups using round burs operated at low speed. DESIGN: Randomised controlled trial.
INTERVENTION: Patients were randomised to receive either a 5 g tube of dexamethasone ointment (containing 5 mg dexamethasone) [n=120] or placebo ointment [n=120]. Participants were instructed to apply the given agents to the ulcer three times a day (after meals) for five days.
