Food taboo among pregnant Ethiopian women: magnitude, drivers, and association with anemia.

BACKGROUND: There are pervasive pregnancy-related food taboos and myths (PRFT) in Ethiopia. The evidence, however, is limited on whether PRFT contributes to the burden of maternal anemia. Thus, this study was aimed to determine the magnitude of PRFT, the reasons for adherence to PRFT, and the association of adherence to PRFT with anemia, among pregnant Ethiopian women. METHODS: The study was case-control in design and recruited a sample of 592 pregnant women attending antenatal care in four health facilities in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Participants were classified into anemic cases (n = 187) an

Proton stereotactic radiotherapy for persistent adrenocorticotropin-producing adenomas.

CONTEXT: Radiation therapy is a potentially curative treatment for corticotroph adenomas refractory to surgery. Protons have an advantage over photons (x-rays) by depositing energy at the target with no exit dose, providing a lower dose to adjacent normal tissues. Until recently, proton stereotactic radiotherapy (PSR) was available at only two U.S. centers; use will increase as proton facilities are under development. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of PSR for persistent Cushing's disease (CD) and Nelson's syndrome (NS). DESIGN: This was a retrospective revie

Evaluation of strategies to support implementation of a hospital walking program: protocol for a type III effectiveness-implementation hybrid trial.

BACKGROUND: STRIDE is a supervised walking program designed to address the negative consequences of immobility during hospitalization for older adults. In an 8-hospital stepped wedge randomized controlled trial, STRIDE was associated with reduced odds of hospital discharge to skilled nursing facility. STRIDE has the potential to become a system-wide approach to address hospital-associated disability in Veteran's Affairs; however, critical questions remain about how best to scale and sustain the program. The overall study goal is to compare the impact of two strategies on STRIDE program penetra

Evidence, theory and context: using intervention mapping in the development of a community-based self-management program for chronic low back pain in a rural African primary care setting - the good back program.

BACKGROUND: Rural Nigeria has one of the greatest burdens of low back pain but there are no effective evidence-based interventions to manage it in this population. This paper presents the application of the intervention mapping (IM) approach in the development of a complex behavior change intervention - The Good Back program, aimed at reducing non-specific chronic low back pain (CLBP) disability in rural Nigeria. METHODS: The first four steps of IM were applied. A critical review of the literature, 2 qualitative studies and a population-based cross-sectional study in rural Nigeria helped to i

Feasibility and tolerability of group cognitive behavioral therapy on improving functioning and managing craving and psychosocial factors among incarcerated women with methamphetamine use disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) has risen among women globally and is disproportionately higher in prisons. In Indonesia, correctional facilities still lack any structured and evidence-based psychological therapy. To address this gap, we developed the Indonesia Substance Use Reduction for Female Therapy (Indo-SURFT). METHODS: A single-arm unblinded design with a 3-month follow-up was conducted among incarcerated women with MUD. Participants completed 12 sessions over six weeks. Assessments included user perception ratings, Addiction Severity Index (ASI), Visual Analog Scale f

Economic burden of breast, cervical, and oral cancer in Bangladesh: a cost-of-illness study.

BACKGROUND: Breast, cervical, and oral cancers are leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Bangladesh, placing a heavy economic burden on households and the health system. Yet, this burden remains poorly understood, as no prior study has comprehensively examined their economic impact. Moreover, the profound psychological suffering experienced by patients are often overlooked in existing global evidence. Therefore, this study aims to estimate the comprehensive economic burden of breast, cervical, and oral cancers in Bangladesh from the household perspective. METHODS: Using a cross-section

Be-SNAP: the Belgian Sepsis National Action Plan.

Sepsis represents a significant healthcare challenge in Belgium with an estimated 40,952 cases annually (95% CI 31,938-54,451). This life-threatening condition leads to approximately 7,675 premature deaths per year (95% CI 6,421-9,089) and a loss of 38,106 quality-adjusted life years. The economic impact is substantial with annual costs ranging from €277 million to €4.3 billion. Despite this impact, Belgium lacks a national sepsis plan until present date. Following requests from diverse professional and patient organizations yielding public and political attention, the federal minister of Heal

The burden and management of neonatal jaundice in Nigeria: A scoping review of the literature.

Neonatal jaundice is a leading cause of hospitalization in the first week of life worldwide. If inappropriately managed, it may result in significant bilirubin-induced mortality and disability. We set out to describe the epidemiology of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia as well as the practices and challenges in the care of infants with significant neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (SNH) in Nigeria, as basis for policy intervention and research priorities. We systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, WHO Library Database, African Index Medicu

Absence of antiretroviral therapy and other risk factors for morbidity and mortality in Malaysian compulsory drug detention and rehabilitation centers.

BACKGROUND: Throughout Asia, people who use drugs are confined in facilities referred to as compulsory drug detention and rehabilitation centers. The limited transparency and accessibility of these centers has posed a significant challenge to evaluating detainees and detention conditions directly. Despite HIV being highly prevalent in this type of confined setting, direct evaluation of detainees with HIV and their access to medical care has yet to be reported in the literature. METHODS: We evaluated the health status of 100 adult male detainees with HIV and their access to medical care in the

Evidence of an association between the vasopressin V1b receptor gene (AVPR1B) and childhood-onset mood disorders.

CONTEXT: Disturbances in stress hormones have been implicated in mood disorders, in particular in the hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Arginine vasopressin (AVP) plays a crucial role in modulating the HPA axis under stress and does so through a G protein-coupled receptor, vasopressin V1b receptor (AVPR1b). OBJECTIVE: To determine if genetic variation in AVPR1B could be contributing to vulnerability to mood disorders. DESIGN: We genotyped single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across the AVPR1B gene in a family-based sample with childhood-onset mood disorders. S

23S rRNA as an a-Maz-ing new bacterial toxin target.

BACKGROUND: TB-HIV co-infection is one of the biggest public health challenges in sub-Saharan Africa. Although there is a wealth of information on TB-HIV co-infection among settled populations in Africa and elsewhere, to our knowledge, there are no published reports on TB-HIV co-infection from pastoral communities. In this study, we report the prevalence of TB, HIV and TB-HIV co-infection among pulmonary TB suspects in the Afar Regional State of Ethiopia. DESIGN: In a cross-sectional study design, 325 pulmonary TB suspects were included from five health facilities. Three sputum samples (spot-

Portal-systemic encephalopathy in non-cirrhotic patients: classification of clinical types, diagnosis and treatment.

Hepatic encephalopathy is suspected in non-cirrhotic cases of encephalopathy because the symptoms are accompanied by hyperammonaemia. However, the cause of the large portal-systemic shunt formation observed in these cases is not clear, as cirrhosis and portal hypertension are absent. The frequency of such cases reported in the literature is increasing with progress and spread of abdominal imaging diagnostic techniques. Some cases have been misdiagnosed as psychiatric diseases (dementia, depression and others) and consequently patients have been hospitalized in psychiatric institutions or geria

Determinants of visceral leishmaniasis among patients admitted to selected public hospitals in Guji and Borena Zones, southern Oromia, Ethiopia: An unmatched case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) remains a significant public health concern in East Africa, with an estimated 30,000 cases reported annually. Ethiopia is among the most affected countries in the region, with the southern part of the country bearing a substantial share of the disease burden. Despite the high endemicity of VL in these areas, evidence regarding the factors contributing to disease occurrence among at-risk populations remains limited. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to identify the determinants of visceral leishmaniasis among patients admitted to selected public hospitals in G

Early initiation of fast-track care for persons living with HIV initiating dolutegravir-based regimens during a period of severe civil unrest in Port-au-Prince, Haiti: a pilot randomized trial.

INTRODUCTION: Differentiated service delivery (DSD) models have been widely implemented for patients in stable HIV care. However, DSD has rarely been offered to newly diagnosed patients. We assessed the effectiveness of early fast-track care during a period of severe civil unrest in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. METHODS: We conducted a pilot randomized trial among adults presenting with early HIV disease to determine whether early fast-track care (8-12 weeks after same-day HIV testing and antiretroviral therapy [ART] initiation) was associated with superior outcomes compared with standard (deferred

Implementation of a multifaceted nurse-led intervention to reduce indwelling urinary catheter use in four Australian hospitals: A pre- and postintervention study.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to reduce indwelling urinary catheter (IDC) use and duration through implementation of a multifaceted "bundled" care intervention. BACKGROUND: Indwelling urinary catheters present a risk for patients through the potential development of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI), with duration of IDC a key risk factor. Catheter-associated urinary tract infection is considered preventable yet accounts for over a third of all hospital-acquired infections. The most effective CAUTI reduction strategy is to avoid IDC use where ever possible and to rem
