Somatosensory-evoked and spinal cord-evoked potentials in response to pudendal and tibial nerve stimulation in cats.

Somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEP) and spinal cord-evoked potentials (SCEP) were recorded in clinically normal adult cats in response to electrical stimulation of pudendal and tibial nerves to provide normative data that can be used in a clinical evaluation of pudendal nerve function in cats after sacral or sacrococcygeal luxations or fractures. Responses to tibial nerve stimulation were included in the study as an internal control because it is usually not involved in these types of injuries and because its SEP and SCEP are easily recorded. Evoked potentials were characterized by the laten…

Contribution of initial median-nerve somatosensory evoked potentials and brainstem auditory evoked potentials to prediction of clinical outcome in cerebrovascular critical care patients: a statistical evaluation.

In a prospective study of 200 patients with cerebrovascular disease (48 intracerebral hemorrhages, [ICH]; 64 subarachnoid hemorrhages, [SAH]; 48 supratentorial and 40 infratentorial ischemic strokes), we assessed the individual and combined prognostic value of median-nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) within 72 hours of admission. Clinical outcome was graded in three ranked categories according to a modified Glasgow Outcome Scale. Likewise, the initial SEP and BAEP findings were graded in a three-class score. In all groups, the SEP were …

Evaluation of visual evoked potentials and brain-stem auditory evoked response in patients of chronic kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with functional changes in the central nervous system (CNS) which, in the initial stages do not manifest clinically. Early involvement of the CNS can be identified by the assessment of the electrocortical activity. Visual evoked potential (VEP) and brain-stem auditory evoked response (BAER) are useful tests for the early diagnosis of CNS involvement in CKD and are more sensitive compared to electroencephalography. One hundred adult CKD patients (stage 3-5 and 5D) and 50 controls were included in the study. Clinical and biochemical parameters were asse

Evoked potential findings in Behçet's disease. Brain-stem auditory, visual, and somatosensory evoked potentials in 44 patients.

We studied 54 patients with Behçet's disease, 41 males and 13 females, mean age 28 years. Forty-four patients had auditory brain-stem evoked potential (BAEP) recordings, 39 had pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (VEP), 27 had median nerve somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) recordings, and 25 tibial nerve SEPs. BAEPs were abnormal in 16 patients (52%) with neurological manifestations and in 4 (31%) without, because of decreased amplitude of wave V, prolonged I-III or III-V interpeak latencies, or uncertain/absent waves III and/or V. Eleven patients (40%) with neurological symptoms and …

Somatosensory Evoked Potentials in Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3 and Type 10.

Spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) are heterogeneous neurodegenerative disorders with variable phenotypes. Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) provide insights into the integrity of the dorsal-lemniscal pathway. This study aimed to evaluate SSEP findings in patients with SCA3 and SCA10 and compare their neurophysiological profiles. We conducted a cross-sectional study including 20 SCA3 patients and 20 SCA10 patients under follow-up at a tertiary ataxia clinic in Southern Brazil. Clinical assessment comprised demographic, genetic, and phenotypic characterization, including the Scale for the Ass…

Early nociceptive evoked potentials in symptomatic and asymptomatic transthyretin mutation carriers.

INTRODUCTION: Small fiber involvement is an early feature of hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis with polyneuropathy (ATTRv-PN), but neurophysiological assessment remains challenging due to the lack of reliable methods. Nociceptive evoked potentials (NEPs), recently introduced to evaluate the nociceptive pathway, were employed here to identify potential neurophysiological abnormalities in ATTRv-PN. METHODS: Fourteen transthyretin mutation carriers (eight ATTRv-PN, six asymptomatic) underwent a cross-sectional evaluation, including clinical scales, NEPs, pain-related evoked potentials (PREPs)…

Evaluation of Masseteric Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials in Patients With Migraine.

PURPOSE: Masseter vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (mVEMP) involve the connection between the vestibular complex and trigeminal nerve nuclei. Given the theory that migraine is caused by increased activation of the trigeminal nerve, it is believed that mVEMP responses may have influenced in migraine patients. METHOD: The study included 20 individuals with migraine and 20 healthy controls. Latency, amplitude, and interaural amplitude asymmetry ratio of mVEMP responses recorded in migraine patients were compared with control group. RESULTS: Considering the mVEMP normalization study conduct

Shape analysis of evoked action potentials recorded on the splenic nerve.

Stimulation of the splenic nerve represents a new way of treatment for inflammatory diseases and in particular rheumatoid arthritis. The implementation of this treatment requires studies on the functioning of the nerve and its response to stimulation in order to find the most suitable parameters allowing appropriate biological feedback while maintaining the condition of the nerve and optimizing the energy of the stimulation with a view to maximizing the lifespan of the future implantable device. In this study, we searched how to analyze the evoked nervous response to characterize the influence

The role of the electroencephalogram and evoked potentials after cardiac arrest.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In comatose cardiac arrest survivors, the electroencephalogram (EEG) is the most widely used test to assess the severity of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBI) and guide antiseizure treatment. However, a wide variety of EEG patterns are described in literature. Moreover, the value of postarrest seizure treatment is uncertain. Absent N20 waves of short-latency somatosensory-evoked potentials (SSEPs) are a specific predictor of irreversible HIBI. However, the prognostic significance of the N20 amplitude is less known. RECENT FINDINGS: The increasing adoption of standardized …
