Mitigating facial nerve injury risks in aesthetic surgery: A narrative review of surgical practices and anatomicsal challenges.

Facial nerve injuries pose challenges in cosmetic surgery. We comprehensively reviewed the anatomy of the facial nerve, with a focus on its five major branches-temporal, zygomatic, buccal, marginal mandibular, and cervical- and explored the clinical implications of nerve injuries during cosmetic procedures. Surgical damage to any branch of the facial nerve can lead to functional impairments, including facial asymmetry, impaired eye closure, speech difficulties, and reduced oral competence. Furthermore, aesthetic consequences, including facial drooping and altered appearance, can profoundly aff

Burkitt Lymphoma Presenting With Acute Kidney Injury and Facial Nerve Palsy: A Case Report With Literature Review.

Burkitt lymphoma is an aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma. While kidney infiltration is well documented, acute kidney injury is an unusual presentation. Facial nerve palsy is even rarer. Here, we report a case of a 2-year-old boy with both of these unusual findings. He presented with acute kidney injury and bilateral nephromegaly. Two days later, he developed left-sided facial nerve palsy. Imaging showed enlarged cervical lymph nodes. Bone marrow biopsy confirmed Burkitt lymphoma. He was treated following the COG ANHL01P1 protocol, with initial significant clinical improvement. Despite this, his

An Unusual Pediatric Case of an Insidious Thermal Airway Injury Without Initial Signs of Facial or Intraoral Scalding.

Thermal airway injuries, usually accompanied by facial burns, require emergency management. We encountered a pediatric case of a late airway-scalding injury without any initial signs of scalding on the face or inside the oral cavity. A 16-month-old boy was accidentally exposed to boiling water from overhead and developed tachypnea and dyspnea at 8 h after the injury. When he visited our hospital at 12 h after the injury, there were no scalding-related findings on his face or inside his oral cavity; however, severe laryngeal edema was observed, which required emergency intubation. Thermal airwa

Evaluation of Concomitant Facial Fracture in Traumatic Brain Injury Patients-Simplification and External Validation of a Prediction Model.

BACKGROUND: Patients with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) often experience concurrent facial bone fractures. In 2021, a prediction model with 10 variables was published and precisely predicted concomitant facial fractures in TBI patients. Herein, external validation and simplification of this model was performed. METHODS: Traumatic brain injury patients treated at a major referral trauma center were retrospectively reviewed for 1 year. The original prediction model (published in 2021), which was developed from a rural level II trauma center, was applied for external validation. A new and simp

Porous Organic Materials in Tissue Engineering: Recent Advances and Applications for Severed Facial Nerve Injury Repair.

The prevalence of facial nerve injury is substantial, and the restoration of its structure and function remains a significant challenge. Autologous nerve transplantation is a common treatment for severed facial nerve injury; however, it has great limitations. Therefore, there is an urgent need for clinical repair methods that can rival it. Tissue engineering nerve conduits are usually composed of scaffolds, cells and neurofactors. Tissue engineering is regarded as a promising method for facial nerve regeneration. Among different factors, the porous nerve conduit made of organic materials, whic

Relationships of self-awareness and facial affect recognition to social communication ability in persons with traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can cause changes to the injured person's physical ability, cognitive functioning, and social interactions. Since these attributes largely determine a person's concept of who they are, TBI poses a threat to sense of self. Due to the importance of social communication skills for community integration, impairment of these skills is a particular threat to sense of self. The present investigation sought to explore characteristics that influence social communication abilities. We hypothesized that both ability to interpret facial affect and self-awareness would be assoc

Repair of facial nerve crush injury in rabbits using collagen plus basic fibroblast growth factor.

Facial nerves are frequently crushed or cut during facial surgery. In this study, the feasibility of repairing facial nerves in rabbits after crush or cut off injury was evaluated using collagen conduits with A collagen-binding domain (CBD)-human basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF). A total of 39 six-month-old New Zealand White rabbits were randomly divided into four groups of nine rabbits, and bilateral crush or cut off injuries were made on each animal's face. Three rabbits were classified as the healthy control. The facial nerves were cut or crushed and then were either untreated or wrapp

Transplantation of Olfactory Stem Cells with Biodegradable Hydrogel Accelerates Facial Nerve Regeneration After Crush Injury.

Olfactory mucosa contains neural stem cells, called olfactory stem cells (OSCs), which produce trophic support required for promoting axonal regeneration after nerve injury. However, the local tissue environment can reduce the viability/function of transplanted cells when placed directly on the injury. Although gelatin hydrogels have been shown to aid cell survival during transplantation, such OSC-hydrogel combinations have not been extensively tested, particularly during recovery from facial nerve palsy. In this study, OSCs were isolated from the olfactory mucosae of newborn mice and were sho

Continuous dynamic mapping to avoid accidental injury of the facial nerve during surgery for large vestibular schwannomas.

In vestibular schwannoma (VS) surgery postoperative facial nerve (CN VII) palsy is reducing quality of life. Recently, we have introduced a surgical suction device for continuous dynamic mapping to provide feedback during tumor resection without switching to a separate stimulation probe. The objective was to evaluate the reliability of this method to avoid CN VII injury. Continuous mapping for CN VII was performed in large VS (08/2014 to 11/2017) additionally to standard neurophysiological techniques. A surgical suction-and-mapping probe was used for surgical dissection and continuous monopola

Bovine lactoferrin reduces extra-territorial facial allodynia/hyperalgesia following a trigeminal nerve injury in the rat.

There is an urgent clinical need for an effective therapeutic agent to treat neuropathic pain. This study explored whether intrathecal administration of bovine lactoferrin (bLF), in combination with signal transduction pathway inhibition or an inflammatory cytokine production, results in reduced allodynia/hyperalgesia in the whisker pad area following mental nerve transection (MNT) in rats. Rats were intrathecally infused with bLF, lipopolysaccharide from Rhodobacter sphaeroides (LPS-RS), an antagonist of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), or interleukin (IL)-18 binding protein (BP). bLF attenuated

A Modified Preauricular Approach for Treating Intracapsular Condylar Fractures to Prevent Facial Nerve Injury: The Supratemporalis Approach.

PURPOSE: The facial nerve remains at risk of injury with the preauricular approach; thus, preservation of the functional integrity of the facial nerve is considered an important factor in the success of temporomandibular joint surgery. The aim of this study was to prevent facial nerve injury using the supratemporalis approach in the treatment of intracapsular condylar fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, the population consisted of patients diagnosed with intracapsular condylar fractures who received surgical treatment from July 2005 to May 2014. Patients in the

Concepts in Neural Coaptation: Using the Facial Nerve as a Paradigm in Understanding Principles Surrounding Nerve Injury and Repair.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with nerve transection face unpredictable outcomes, and microsurgical interventions have variable success. The facial nerve in particular is prone to traumatic transection and leads to debilitating sequelae. Surgeons have used multiple modalities of enhancing nerve regeneration and restoring premorbid functionality. The success of nerve regeneration is predicated on multiple physiologic factors. This article sought to collate the literature on factors influencing nerve damage and repair, using the facial nerve as a paradigm. As such, facial reanimation will also be brie

The soft tissue landmarks to avoid injury to the facial artery during filler and neurotoxin injection at the nasolabial region.

The aim of this study was to locate the course of the facial artery and to propose "the danger line" vulnerable to vascular complications following filler injection. The entire facial soft tissues were harvested from 14 Thai soft embalmed cadavers as a facial flap specimen. Measurements of the distance, the depth, and the diameter of the facial artery were done at level of the oral commissure and the nasal ala. The distance between the facial artery and the oral commissure was 15.3 ± 3.7 mm and the depth from the skin was 11.1 ± 3.1 mm. The distance between the facial artery and the nasal ala

Qualitative effect on mRNAs of injury-associated proteins by cell phone like radiation in rat facial nerves.

Rats were exposed to cell phone radiation for 6 hours per day for 18 weeks. The buccal and mandibular branches of the facial nerve were evaluated for this study. The mRNA levels of four proteins that are usually up regulated when an injury has occurred were investigated; included were Calcium ATP-ase, Endothelin, Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule, and Neural Growth Factor. These isolated mRNAs were subjected to RT-PCR and all four were up regulated. The mandibular nerve showed a higher and broader level of up regulation than the buccal nerve. All four mRNA up regulations for the mandibular nerve a

Manually-stimulated recovery of motor function after facial nerve injury requires intact sensory input.

We have recently shown in rat that daily manual stimulation (MS) of vibrissal muscles promotes recovery of whisking and reduces polyinnervation of muscle fibers following repair of the facial nerve (facial-facial anastomosis, FFA). Here, we examined whether these positive effects were: (1) correlated with alterations of the afferent connections of regenerated facial motoneurons, and (2) whether they were achieved by enhanced sensory input through the intact trigeminal nerve. First, we quantified the extent of total synaptic input to motoneurons in the facial nucleus using synaptophysin immunoc

[Long-term functional and aesthetic sequelae after complex facial trauma associated with a mild brain injury].

INTRODUCTION: Most victims of complex facial trauma will have permanent sequelae. The goal of our work was to evaluate, by means of a retrospective study, the long-term sequelae in these patients. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 102 victims of complex facial trauma were treated in our department between 1995 and 2000. Twenty-four could be re-examined in 2006 in order to evaluate their long-term sequelae. All the patients suffered a mild brain injury. RESULTS: The overall satisfaction rate was good (19/24), but all patients presented either functional or aesthetic sequelae. The major functional sequelae

Facial nerve in rhytidoplasty: anatomic study of its trajectory in the overlying skin and the most common sites of injury.

The anatomic study of the facial nerve is closely related to the prevention of nerve injury that may occur in facial surgeries. The purpose of this study is to analyze the most susceptible areas in the face regarding the probability of facial nerve injury, based on the demarcation of its trajectory in the overlying skin. Three hundred cadaveric hemifaces were dissected (172 male, 128 female) and the facial nerve trajectory was followed from the stylomastoids foramen to the mimic muscles. The trajectory of the facial branches was delimited in the overlying skin by six diverging lines, with the
