Gaze patterns during face perception have been shown to relate to psychiatric symptoms. Standard analysis of gaze behavior includes calculating fixations within arbitrarily predetermined areas of interest. In contrast to this approach, we present an objective, data-driven method for the analysis of gaze patterns and their relation to diagnostic test scores. This method was applied to data acquired in an adult sample (N = 111) of psychiatry outpatients while they freely looked at images of human faces. Dimensional symptom scores of autism, attention deficit, and depression were collected. A lin

Face recognition is a highly developed and efficient human function that involves multiple neural networks. A main pathway links the occipital cortex, where an occipital face area (OFA) has been identified, to a fusiform face area (FFA) in the fusiform gyrus, which plays a critical role in face recognition. This core pathway deals with invariant aspects of the face. Another pathway, including the superior temporal sulcus, is involved in the perception of more changeable aspects of the face such as gaze orientation, face expression and lip movements. It has been defined by some authors as a "th

Emotions are implicitly expressed in both facial expressions and prosodic components of vocal communication. The ability to recognize nonverbal cues of emotion is an important feature of social competence that matures gradually across childhood and adolescence. Compared to the extensive knowledge about the development of emotion recognition (ER) from facial displays of emotion, relatively little is known about the maturation of this ability in the auditory domain. The current review provides an overview of knowledge about the development of vocal emotion recognition from behavioural studies, a

We examined category formation for faces differing in age in 9- and 12-month-olds, and the influence of exposure to infant faces on such ability. Infants were familiarized with adult or infant faces, and then tested with a novel exemplar from the familiarized category paired with a novel exemplar from a novel category (Experiment 1). Both age groups formed discrete categories of adult and infant faces, but exposure to infant faces in everyday life did not modulate performance. The same task was conducted with child versus infant faces (Experiment 2). Whereas 9-month-olds preferred infant faces

BACKGROUND: Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and Williams-Beuren Syndrome (WS) are two conditions which seem to be at opposite ends in the continuum of social fear but show compromised abilities in some overlapping areas, including some social interactions, gaze contact and processing of facial emotional cues. The increase in the number of neuroimaging studies has greatly expanded our knowledge of the neural bases of facial emotion processing in both conditions. However, to date, SAD and WS have not been compared.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of functional magnetic resonance imaging

Individuals with callous-unemotional (CU) traits show deficits in facial emotion recognition. According to preliminary research, this impairment may be due to attentional neglect to peoples' eyes when evaluating emotionally expressive faces. However, it is unknown whether this atypical processing pattern is unique to established variants of CU traits or modifiable with intervention. This study examined facial affect recognition and gaze patterns among individuals (N = 80; M age = 19.95, SD = 1.01 years; 50% female) with primary vs secondary CU variants. These groups were identified based on re

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) commonly involve deficits in social cognition and facial processing. The N170 and N250 event-related potentials (ERP), indexing perceptual and recognition stages of face processing respectively, have shown alterations in schizophrenia. Given diagnostic advances, an updated analysis is necessary to examine these ERP across SSD, including high-risk individuals and those exhibiting schizotypal traits.
OBJECTIVES: To update previous meta-analysis findings by evaluating the effects of SSD on N170 and N250 amplitude and latency.
METHOD: Studies

Evidence indicates that faces are rapidly detected and prioritized in visual processing due to their social relevance. Crucially, research has shown that faces capture attention even when they are task-irrelevant, suggesting the existence of an automatic, domain-specific attentional mechanism. This prioritization appears to extend to face pareidolia-the illusory perception of faces in objects-indicating that face detection may rely on a broadly tuned mechanism that classifies stimuli as faces or non-faces based on relatively minimal information, such as the T-shaped configuration common to all

Much of our visual experience of faces, including our own, is mediated by technology, for example when a digital photo depicts a mirror reversal of reality. How does this difference in visual experience affect judgments about appearance? Here, we asked participants to view their likeness in photographs that were reversed (as when viewed in a mirror) or not reversed (as when viewed directly). Observers also perceptually adapted (or not) to the reversed or non-reversed images in a 2 × 2 design. Observers then rated how much each photograph resembled them and how much they liked their appearance

BACKGROUND: Autistic and non-autistic individuals often differ in how they perceive and show emotions, especially in their ability and inclination to infer other people's feelings from subtle cues like facial expressions. Prominent theories of autism have suggested that these differences stem from alterations in amygdala functioning and that amygdala hypoactivation causes problems with emotion recognition. Thus far, however, empirical investigations of this hypothesis have yielded mixed results and largely relied on relatively small samples.
METHODS: In a sample of 72 autistic and 79 non-auti

INTRODUCTION: 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22qDS) has been associated with varying levels of social impairments, and with atypical visual scanning of faces. The present study explored whether self-reported sensitivity to eye contact might be related to these phenomena.
METHOD: Individuals with confirmed 22qDS were interviewed about their experience and possible discomfort with eye contact. In cases where individuals expresesed discomfort, they were subsequently asked about coping mechanisms used to deal with this discomfort. In addition to self-reported eye contact discomfort, gaze to emotional

Impaired capability for understanding and interpreting the expressions on other people's faces manifests itself as a core feature of schizophrenia, contributing to social dysfunction. With the purpose of better understanding of the neurobiological basis of facial emotion perception deficits in schizophrenia, we investigated facial emotion perception abilities and regional structural brain abnormalities in drug-naïve patients with first-episode schizophrenia, and then examined the correlation between them. Fifty-two drug-naive patients with first-episode schizophrenia and 29 group-matched healt

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can lead to impairments in emotion recognition that can present considerable challenges to social communication and the maintenance of interpersonal relationships. This review aimed to estimate the magnitude of emotion recognition impairments in TBI patients overall, and at the emotion category level, and to determine if the magnitude of observed impairments were moderated by modality (e.g., face, voice, multi-modal) of emotional expression, and severity of injury. Searches of PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, and Medline databases identified 17 studies which satisfied str

Background In recent years, a growing body of eye-tracking research has investigated gaze behavior in individuals with social anxiety during the visual perception of emotional stimuli. The aim of this article was to review and synthesize studies examining attention orientation in patients with clinical social anxiety by means of eye-tracking methodology. Methods Through a systematic search, 30 articles were identified, including 11 studies in which single emotional faces were used as stimuli and seven eligible studies in which threatening faces were paired with neutral stimuli. Meta-analyses w

OBJECTIVES: Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), such as Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, and Huntington's disease, inevitably lead to impairments in higher-order cognitive functions, including the perception of emotional cues and decision-making behavior. Such impairments are likely to cause risky daily life behavior, for instance, in traffic. Impaired recognition of emotional expressions, such as fear, is considered a marker of impaired experience of emotions. Lower fear experience can, in turn, be related to risk-taking behavior. The aim of our study wa

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Functional imaging studies, intracranial recordings, and lesion-deficit correlations in neurological patients have produced unique insights into the cognitive mechanisms and neural substrates of face recognition. In this review, we highlight recent advances in the field and integrate data from these complementary lines of research to propose a functional neuroanatomical model of face identity recognition.
RECENT FINDINGS: Rather than being localized to a single specialized cortical region, face recognition is supported by a distributed neural network. Core components of the

Facial expression recognition depends on both motion and intensity, but how these factors interact within and across emotions remains unclear. Here we examined recognition accuracy of basic emotions (anger, disgust, fear, joy, sadness, surprise) across low, medium, and high intensity displays of static and naturally dynamic facial expressions. Results showed while there was an overall increase in accuracy with intensity, there were complex interactions between intensity, motion, and emotion. Dynamic cues enhanced recognition of joy, surprise, and anger, particularly at low intensity, whereas d

BACKGROUND: Facial emotion recognition (FER) is affected in multiple sclerosis (MS), impacting interpersonal functioning. Standard FER tests utilize static/posed stimuli, lacking in ecological validity. In this pilot study, we used the Emotion Authenticity Recognition (EAR) test, featuring both genuine/posed dynamic expressions, to assess FER in an MS sample, also investigating behavioral/neuroimaging correlates.
METHODS: A group of 54 MS patients (36 F; age = 41.4 ± 11.0, education = 14.7 ± 2.8) and a matched age/sex/education sample of 54 healthy controls (HCs) completed the EAR test, which

BACKGROUND: Substantial evidence exists about emotion processing (EP) impairments in schizophrenia patients. However, whether these deficits are present primarily during psychosis (i.e., state dependent) or an integral part of the disorder (i.e., trait dependent) remains unclear.
METHODS: EP was assessed with the degraded facial affect recognition task in schizophrenia patients (N=521) and healthy controls (N=312) at baseline (T1) and after a three year follow-up (T2). In schizophrenia patients symptomatic remission was assessed with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) remission
