Childhood environmental unpredictability, defined as the spatial-temporal variation of adverse experiences (Young et al., 2020), has been identified as an essential feature of adversity that has important developmental implications (Ellis et al., 2022). Prior work has linked environmental unpredictability to mental health problems (Koss et al., 2025) and dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis (Doom et al., 2024). However, most studies have treated unpredictability as a static construct, overlooking variability in environmental experiences over time. Although the distinc

BACKGROUND: Family history of diabetes mellitus (FH_ DM) is a well-established risk factor for diabetes, but most studies have focused on disease incidence rather than glycemic changes over time. Understanding how FH_ DM affects the magnitude of change in blood glucose biomarkers before clinical diagnosis can inform earlier intervention strategies and optimize screening intervals.
METHODS: We analyzed standardized health checkup data from Korean adults aged 20 years or older with repeated measurements over approximately 2-year (n = 25,647) and 4-year (n = 12,831) intervals. Using propensity s

Using cross-sectional and longitudinal data from a drug and violence prevention program of Nicaraguan adolescents, this study offers a unique look into personal, family, peer, and communal factors for depression and post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSD). This study draws on primary socialization theory to hypothesize that family, peer, and community factors have a significant impact on youth mental health outcomes. A total of 4631 adolescents (ages 10-17, 49% female) completed self-report surveys in schools. Path models showed that cross-sectionally, parental factors including parental monitor

Strong social support is a protective factor in diabetes and mental health management. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the type of support on perceived mental health status among people with diabetes. We used data from the 2021 Household Component of the Medical Expenditure Survey (MEPS). Regression models assessed the association between mental well-being (outcome) and expected help from family, friends, and the community (exposure). Support from both friends and family were significantly associated with better mental well-being, adjusting for covariates. Secondary a

OBJECTIVE: Identify sources of emotional support among caregivers of children with more complex special health care needs (SHCN) and examine their relationships with caregiver emotional well-being.
METHODS: Secondary analysis of the 2016 to 2022 National Survey of Children's Health. We categorized children by degree of medical complexity: no SHCN, less complex SHCN, and more complex SHCN. Our primary outcome was caregivers' self-reported sources of emotional support. Chi-squared testing compared caregivers' sources of emotional support across child medical complexity levels. Adjusted logistic

Though pediatric health supervision Down syndrome (DS) guidelines have been established for decades, prior work has shown that primary care providers (PCPs) experience challenges to their adherence and information on family caregivers' experience with the DS guidelines is lacking. To address this literature gap, our study sought to understand the experiences of family caregivers with health supervision care as related to guideline adherence and patient-family experience. Through semi-structured interviews, we found that most caregivers felt their child's health care needs were being met but ex

Despite autism's prominent genetic etiology and early-life origins, parsing genetic effects contributing to the condition into those that operate directly (via allelic transmission to offspring) vs. indirectly (via influencing prenatal environment) remains challenging. We examined this using a novel design leveraging 3-generation family linkage in Danish national registers. The cohort included all children born in Denmark from 1998-2015 and their relatives identified through 3-generation family linkage. The analytic sample comprised full maternal cousin pairs, including parallel (children of m

This study examines the association between family-level intelligence metrics, and maternal health outcomes in middle age, as captured in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. Building on past research documenting links between maternal intelligence and health, our study expands the inquiry by exploring how both variations and trends in family-level intelligence are associated with maternal middle-age health. We use multilevel modeling analysis to extract family intelligence levels and growth scores from children's Peabody Individual Achievement Test of math, reading recognition and readi

The IκB kinase (IKK) complex plays a central role in many signaling pathways that activate NF-κB, which turns on a battery of genes important for immune response, inflammation, and cancer development. Ubiquitination is one of the most prevalent post-translational modifications of proteins and is best known for targeting substrates for proteasomal degradation. The investigations of NF-κB signaling pathway primed the unveiling of the non-degradative roles of protein ubiquitination. The NF-κB-essential modulator (NEMO) is the IKK regulatory subunit that is essential for IKK activation by diverse

Adolescents in out-of-home care face heightened risks of mental health disorders, yet less is known about the broader range of mental health symptoms and their development over time. This study examines self-reported mental health complaints among adolescents in foster family care compared to their peers in the general population. Using repeated cross-sectional data from the Stockholm School Survey (2004-2022), which includes approximately 114,000 participants, 1 % of whom live in foster family care, the study analyzes differences in prevalence and explores temporal trends of these complaints,

Over 7000 youth ages 13-24 are diagnosed annually with HIV-1 in the United States despite the 2018 approval of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for adolescents, highlighting the need for more research on provider prescribing practices in pediatric populations. Prior research chiefly focuses on patient barriers to accessing PrEP, and thus, our study explored provider barriers. From August to December of 2023, we conducted a survey of medical providers in pediatrics, family medicine (FM), and internal medicine (IM)/pediatrics. A 5-point Likert scale (0-4) assessed comfort in providing adoles
