Experience of family caregivers of breast cancer-related lymphedema patients participating in lymphedema management: a phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Home-based maintenance treatment is necessary for patients with breast cancer-related lymphedema even after their treatment regimen is finished. There is limited understanding regarding the involvement and experiences of family caregivers in effectively managing lymphedema. Therefore, this study aims to explore the daily experiences of family caregivers in order to enhance their home care plans for lymphedema management. METHODS: Employing phenomenological research methods, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 family caregivers responsible for the care of breast cance

Early identification of individual, parent and family related factors associated with different levels of youth care services.

Intensive youth care (out-of-home care and repeated outpatient care) is often provided to children with complex and persistent difficulties and is associated with adverse later outcomes. In order to reduce the escalation of care needs by timely referring to lighter forms of youth care, it is essential to differentiate children according to their risk for these intensive types of youth care. The aim of this study is to examine whether individual, parental, and family-related factors are differentially associated with light and intensive forms of youth care. Register data of 15,116 children and

Familial Occurrence of Anti-NF155 Autoimmune Nodopathy in Father and Son: Expanding the Spectrum of IgG4-Related Nodopathies.

We report the first documented familial occurrence of Anti-Neurofascin-155 (Anti-NF155) autoimmune nodopathy in both a father and his son. Anti-NF155 nodopathy can resemble chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) but differs in its poor response to standard CIDP treatments such as intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and steroids, instead requiring B-cell-depleting therapies. A previously healthy 34-year-old male presented with a five-to-six week history of subacute sensory ataxia, symmetric proximal and distal weakness, and areflexia, preceded by right-sided Bell's palsy. Cerebr

A case report of a family with MYH9 gene mutation-related disease in an ethnic minority group and literature review.

BACKGROUND: May-Hegglin anomaly, a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by MYH9 mutations, is characterized by the classic "triad" of thrombocytopenia, giant platelets, and granulocyte cytoplasmic inclusion bodies; some patients also present non-hematological symptoms. RESULTS: We reported a family of MYH9-related disease. The proband had microscopic hematuria, proteinuria, and thrombocytopenia on physical examination; blood smear re-examination showed giant platelets and Döhle-like bodies. His medical history included childhood epistaxis; his father had unexplained thrombocytopenia/protein

Expanding the Clinical and Mutational Spectrum of FBXO7-Related Parkinsonism: A Novel Italian Family and Comprehensive Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the FBXO7 gene (PARK15) cause an autosomal recessive, early-onset neurodegenerative disorder typically presenting as Parkinsonian-Pyramidal Syndrome (PPS). Despite its recognition, the high phenotypic variability often delays diagnosis. Here, we report a novel Italian family and synthesize data from all published cases to date, offering an updated clinical and molecular overview of the disease. METHODS: We performed clinical and molecular characterization of a newly identified family. Furthermore, we conducted a systematic literature review (from 2008 to 2026) to aggr

Hypocalciuria as a Key to Diagnosis: A Rare Case of GNA11-Related Familial Hypocalciuric Hypercalcemia (FHH) Type 2.

Familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia (FHH) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder of calcium homeostasis characterized by mild hypercalcemia, non-suppressed parathyroid hormone (PTH), and hypocalciuria. FHH type 2 (FHH2), caused by mutations in the GNA11 gene, is particularly rare. Differentiating FHH from primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is crucial to avoid unnecessary surgical intervention. We report a 63-year-old male with persistent hypercalcemia and inappropriately normal PTH levels. Biochemical evaluation revealed marked hypocalciuria with a fractional excretion of calcium of 0.0039. Im

Evolutionary insights and expression patterns of sex-related gene families in the zig-zag eel Mastacembelus armatus.

The zig-zag eel exhibits both sexual dimorphism and sex reversal, making it crucial to understand the mechanisms of sex determination and differentiation. Additionally, the wild populations of the zig-zag eel are significantly declining, emphasizing the need for urgent conservation efforts. In this study, we identified 7 Dmrt, 62 HMG-box, and 73 TGF-β family members in the zig-zag eel genome. Evolutionary analysis revealed that the HMG-box and TGF-β families in the zig-zag eel are primarily characterized by purifying selection. Furthermore, we identified 52 differentially expressed genes betwe

Family risk classes predict longitudinal parent and child outcomes: Understanding the implications of poverty-related adversity.

Experiencing poverty and associated risk factors can be detrimental to families' mental health and well-being. However, it is unclear whether experiencing specific types or patterns of adversity leads to distinct outcomes. Guided by the Family Stress Model, the objective of this study was to (a) identify unique family risk classes based on exposure to various combinations of poverty-related adversity and (b) examine whether the family risk classes differed in their levels of parental coping strategies, couple relationship quality, parenting practices, and child behavior problems. The sample in

Identification of tacrolimus-related genes in familial combined hyperlipidemia and development of a diagnostic model using bioinformatics analysis.

BACKGROUND: Clinical observations have revealed that patients undergoing organ transplantation administered tacrolimus often experience abnormal lipid metabolism with serious consequences. Thus, the intricate interplay between tacrolimus and lipid metabolism must be addressed to develop targeted therapeutic interventions. Our ongoing research aims to develop precision medicine approaches that not only alleviate the immediate repercussions for organ transplant patients but also enhance their long-term outcomes. To this end, we investigated the potential genes associated with tacrolimus metaboli

Parental attitudes and practices in families with siblings with and without intellectual disability: Influences of sociodemographic and child-related factors.

BACKGROUND: Parenting styles and attitudes are a relevant factor of a child's developmental environment. When parents raise both a child with an intellectual disability and a typically developing (TD) sibling, their approaches may differ due to factors related to the child, family, and social context. This study explored whether parenting styles and attitudes are consistent across children and examined whether sociodemographic and child-related factors explain variations in parenting behaviors. METHOD: Ninety-five parents with one child diagnosed with intellectual disability (according to DSM

Preventing Childhood Sexual Abuse Related Mental Health Deterioration Using a Narrative Family Intervention in Burundi.

Despite the severe impact of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) on trauma-related disorders, preventive interventions are scarce, especially in (post-)conflict regions. We developed and evaluated a narrative family communication approach for sexually abused Burundian female children and adolescents (N = 102). The intervention cohort (n = 55) received psychoeducation, parental skill training, and preventive narrative exposure therapy. Intervention participants reported improved parental acceptance at 3- and 12-month follow-ups (3mFUP, 12mFUP), and showed greater improvement in overall mental health b

Climate-related disasters and biological aging based on DNA methylation: a twin and family study in Australian women.

BACKGROUND: Weather-related disasters are devastating and may exhibit greater intensity globally under a changing climate, leaving survivors with greater and sustained health risks. However, the potential epigenetic mechanisms underlying the persistent adverse health impacts remain unclear. We aimed to examine the association between tropical cyclones (TCs) or flood exposure and biological aging based on DNA methylation. METHODS: We analysed peripheral blood samples from 479 women in 130 families across Australia and derived six metrics of DNA methylation age acceleration (DNAmAgeAC) for each
