A "Signal Relay" Mode Triggered by Bimetallic Synergistic Enhancement in an MOF-Based Multiemission Fluorescence Sensing/Adsorption Platform for Broad-Concentration-Range Tetracycline Antibiotics Visual Detection.

The widespread misuse of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) and their persistent low-concentration residues in animal-derived foods pose critical threats to human health, while existing analytical methods lack the capability for continuous therapeutic drug monitoring. Herein, a multiemission MOF-on-MOF fluorescence sensing platform codoped with Eu3+ and Zn2+ was engineered via epitaxial growth for simultaneous adsorption and detection of tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, and doxycycline. By leveraging the differential coordination affinities of Eu3+ and Zn2+ toward TCs, a "signal r

Chloroform in food samples from 2014 Canadian total diet study: occurrence and dietary exposure.

Chloroform or trichloromethane is one of the trihalomethanes formed during disinfection of water with chlorine, and residues of chloroform can be detected in foods and food products due to the use of chlorinated drinking water and disinfecting food processing equipment with chlorine-based disinfectants. In this study, chloroform was detected in 37 (or 23%) of the 159 composite food samples from the 2014 Canadian Total Diet Study, but was not detected in cereals, fruits, fast foods, and most of the meat samples. Chloroform was detected in almost all 14 composite samples of dairy products, with …

The Potential of Sweetpotato as a Functional Food in Sub-Saharan Africa and Its Implications for Health: A Review.

Increasing urbanization in developing countries has resulted in busier lifestyles, accompanied by consumption of fast foods. The consequence is an increased prevalence in noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Food-based approaches would be cheaper and more sustainable in reducing these NCDs compared to drugs, which may have side effects. Studies have suggested that consuming functional foods could potentially lower NCD risks. Sweetpotato is regarded as a functional food because it contains bioactive compounds. Recently, sweetpotato has gained attention in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), but research has …

The albumin-exendin-4 recombinant protein E2HSA improves glycemic control and β-cell function in spontaneous diabetic KKAy mice.

BACKGROUND: E2HSA is a genetic fusion protein that consists of two tandem exendin-4 molecules that are covalently bonded to recombinant human serum albumin via a peptide linker. Previous studies have demonstrated that E2HSA significantly decreased blood glucose levels, improved β-cell function and promoted β-cell proliferation in diabetic db/dB mice. This study aimed to evaluate the benefits of E2HSA on glucose and lipid metabolism in a spontaneous diabetes animal model, KKAy mice. METHODS: E2HSA was acutely administered at doses of 1, 3 and 9 mg/kg by subcutaneous injection in diabetic KKAy

A microbiota-informed pipeline for in vitro characterisation of insulinotropic properties of dairy fermentates using static EndoC-βH1 and dynamic microfluidic models.

Diabetes mellitus (DM), which encompasses Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes, affects approximately 537 million adults, with prevalence continuing to rise. In addition to pregnancy, factors such as dietary choices, lifestyle and infections can lead to the development of DM. Given the increasing prevalence of DM, it is necessary to continue to identify approaches to control the release of insulin. Emerging evidence indicates that the gut microbiota plays a central role in mediating the metabolic effects of diet on the host, including the regulation of insulin secretion. Dietary interventio

Endocrine response to realimentation in young northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris): Indications for development of fasting adaptation.

Most organisms undergo changes in their environment, both predictably and unpredictably, which require them to alter priorities in nutrient allocation with regards to food availability. Species that more predictably encounter extended periods of limited food resources or intake while mitigating the negative effects of starvation are considered to be fasting adapted. Northern elephant seals (NES) are one such species and routinely undergo extended periods of fasting for breeding, molting, as well as a post-weaning fast at 6-8weeks of age. However, during unusual times of nutritional deprivation

The association between ultra-processed food exposure and cognition in older adults.

With an ageing population comes a growing burden of age-related cognitive decline. While evidence supports a relationship between higher diet quality and better cognitive outcomes, the association between ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and cognitive function remains underexplored. We examined this association using prospective data from the ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) study, a cohort of Australian adults aged 70 years and older. Dietary intake was assessed via a mail-based diet screening questionnaire and categorised according to the Nova classification. Cognitive performa

Long-term impact of unhealthy food tax on consumption and the drivers behind: A longitudinal study in Hungary.

Several countries have introduced public health product taxes with the objective of reducing the absolute amount of consumption of unhealthy food and tackling obesity. This study aims to estimate the long-term impact of the Hungarian public health product tax introduced in 2011. To achieve this, a unique consumer purchase dataset was analysed to examine daily fast-moving consumer goods purchases from a representative sample of 2,000 households from 2010 to 2018. The results indicate that the tax has been fully reflected in consumer prices. A decline in consumption was observed initially, consi

A High-Sugar Diet Consumption, Metabolism and Health Impacts with a Focus on the Development of Substance Use Disorder: A Narrative Review.

Carbohydrates are important macronutrients in human and rodent diet patterns that play a key role in crucial metabolic pathways and provide the necessary energy for proper body functioning. Sugar homeostasis and intake require complex hormonal and nervous control to proper body energy balance. Added sugar in processed food results in metabolic, cardiovascular, and nervous disorders. Epidemiological reports have shown enhanced consumption of sweet products in children and adults, especially in reproductive age and in pregnant women, which can lead to the susceptibility of offspring's health to

Small intestinal motility and transit by electromyography and radiology in the fasted and fed pig.

The pattern of small intestinal digesta transit was studied in six young pigs (20-30 kg) by simultaneous electromyography and radiology. Pigs showed migrating myoelectric complexes (m.m.c.s) in the small intestine both when fasted and after feeding. The m.m.c.s were modified by feeding; quiescence was much reduced in duration and irregular spiking activity (i.s.a.) was prolonged; m.m.c.s were not disrupted and phases of regular spiking activity (r.s.a.) were still seen after feeding. The r.s.a. phase could be recognized on the screen and in spot films from both fasting and fed pigs as a band o

[Does the stomach balloon modify the function of the esophagus and lower esophageal sphincter, stomach emptying and release of gastrointestinal peptides?].

The Willmen gastric bubble has been used as an adjunct to weight loss in morbidly obese patients. 35 patients with morbid obesity were studied with routine manometry, esophageal 24-h-pH-measurement, and gastric emptying studies before and 4 weeks after bubble placement. During emptying studies blood samples were taken to measure gastrin, PP, CCK, VIP, neurotensin and insulin. No patient developed heartburn or regurgitation after bubble placement. Esophageal motility and LES function remained unchanged. There was no important pathological gastroesophageal reflux before and after gastric bubble.

Pramlintide treatment reduces 24-h caloric intake and meal sizes and improves control of eating in obese subjects: a 6-wk translational research study.

Evidence from rodent studies indicates that the beta-cell-derived neurohormone amylin exerts multiple effects on eating behavior, including reductions in meal size, intake of highly palatable foods, and stress-induced sucrose consumption. To assess the effect of amylin agonism on human eating behavior we conducted a randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled, multicenter study investigating the effects of the amylin analog pramlintide on body weight, 24-h caloric intake, portion sizes, "fast food" intake, and perceived control of eating in 88 obese subjects. After a 2-day placebo lead-in, subject
