Ferulic acid lowers body weight and visceral fat accumulation via modulation of enzymatic, hormonal and inflammatory changes in a mouse model of high-fat diet-induced obesity.

Previous studies have reported on the glucose and lipid-lowering effects of ferulic acid (FA) but its anti-obesity potential has not yet been firmly established. This study investigated the possible anti-obesitogenic effects of FA in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 15 weeks. To assess the antiobesity potential of FA, 32 male Swiss mice, weighing 20-25 g (n=6-8 per group) were fed a normal diet (ND) or HFD, treated orally or not with either FA (10 mg/kg) or sibutramine (10 mg/kg) for 15 weeks and at the end of this period, the body weights of animals, visceral fat accumulation, plasma levels

A comparison of associations of body mass index and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry measured percentage fat and total fat with global serum metabolites in young women.

OBJECTIVE: Body mass index (BMI) does not directly measure adiposity, whereas dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) provides valid direct estimates of adiposity. Therefore, this study evaluated usefulness of BMI as a measure of adiposity in serum metabolomics studies. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted of 202 women aged 25 to 29 years in the Dietary Intervention Study in Children Follow-Up Study. Heights and weights were measured, and body composition was quantified using clinical DXA protocols. Serum metabolomic profiling was performed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spe

Associations of fat mass and fat-free mass accretion in infancy with body composition and cardiometabolic risk markers at 5 years: The Ethiopian iABC birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Accelerated growth in early childhood is an established risk factor for later obesity and cardiometabolic disease, but the relative importance of fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) accretion is not well understood. We aimed to study how FM and FFM at birth and their accretion during infancy were associated with body composition and cardiometabolic risk markers at 5 years. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Healthy children born at term were enrolled in the Infant Anthropometry and Body Composition (iABC) birth cohort between December 2008 and October 2012 at Jimma University Specialized Hos

Relationships Between the Infrapatellar Fat Pad and Patellofemoral Joint Osteoarthritis Differ With Body Mass Index and Sex.

The role of the infrapatellar fat pad (IPFP) in knee osteoarthritis is not understood. This study aimed to identify relationships between MRI-based signal abnormalities in the IPFP and measures of structural pathology and symptom severity in PFJOA, as well as investigate the influence of obesity and sex on these relationships. Seventy participants (ages 28-80) with isolated PFJOA underwent bilateral knee MRI scan acquisitions and completed the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS). MR images were scored for abnormal IPFP area and signal intensity, joint effusion, synovial prolife

Nonlinear relationship between body fat percentage and NAFLD mediated by METS-IR: threshold effects and subgroup differences.

The mechanism linking body fat percentage (BFR) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains unclear. This study investigated whether the metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR) mediates this relationship and examined threshold effects and population heterogeneity. In this cross-sectional study of 6281 participants from the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), logistic regression with restricted cubic splines was used to evaluate the BFR-NAFLD association and identify a threshold. A causal mediation analysis quantified the proportion of the BFR

The role of body composition and visceral fat in osteoporosis subtype differentiation: Insights from bioelectrical impedance analysis.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have demonstrated a close link between body composition and the development and progression of osteoporosis. Visceral fat, in particular, appears to influence bone loss through its pro-inflammatory properties. However, it remains unclear whether this mechanism is equally relevant across different forms of osteoporosis. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether body composition-especially visceral fat- differs between postmenopausal and senile osteoporosis. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A total of 47 patients were prospectively enrolled. The senile osteoporosis group included p

Upper-body free-breathing Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting applied to the quantification of water T1 and fat fraction.

Over the past decade, Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting (MRF) has emerged as an efficient paradigm for the rapid and simultaneous quantification of multiple MRI parameters, including fat fraction (FF), water T1 (T1H2O), water T2 (T2H2O), and fat T1 (T1fat). These parameters serve as promising imaging biomarkers in various anatomical targets such as the heart, liver, and skeletal muscles. However, measuring these parameters in the upper body poses challenges due to physiological motion, particularly respiratory motion. In this work, we propose a novel approach, motion-corrected (MoCo) MRF T1-FF

Dietary milk phospholipids increase body fat and modulate gut permeability, systemic inflammation, and lipid metabolism in mice.

The study examined how dietary milk polar lipids affect gut permeability, systemic inflammation, and lipid metabolism during diet-induced obesity (DIO). C57BL/6J mice (n = 6 × 3) were fed different diets with 34% fat as energy for 15 wk: (1) a modified AIN-93G diet (control; CO); (2) CO with milk gangliosides (GG); and (3) CO with milk phospholipids (MPL). Gut permeability was assessed by fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran and sugar absorption tests. Intestinal tight junction proteins were evaluated by western blot. Plasma cytokines were measured by immunoassay. Body composition was assessed b

Body fat and skeletal muscle mass predict knee strength and pain in young women with patellofemoral pain.

INTRODUCTION: Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is a chronic dysfunction, with a high prevalence in young women and characterized by complaints of recurrent pain and a poor long-term prognosis. With a multifactorial characteristic, recent studies point to a possible association between body composition and PFP outcomes, however the results are still unclear. OBJECTIVE: to investigate whether there is an association between BMI, skeletal muscle mass and body fat with physical function, knee strength and pain in women with PFP. METHODS: Twenty-four women, aged between 18 and 35 years, diagnosed with P

Body mass index and fat influences the role of Bifidobacterium genus in lupus patients concerning fibrinogen levels.

INTRODUCTION: Metabolic disorders and autoimmune diseases elicit distinct yet interconnected manifestations of inflammation, which may be boosted by an excess of body adiposity. The purpose of this investigation was to analyze anthropometric, biochemical, and inflammatory/coagulation variables concerning patients diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) exploiting low-grade metabolic inflammation (MI), as reference. METHODS: A population stratification by body mass index (BMI), allowed to assess the impact of adiposity on the putative role of gut microbiota composition on coagulation

Low-Fat, High-Carbohydrate Diets Reduce Body Weight and Sperm Count but Increase Sperm Motility in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Male reproduction is impacted by both over- and under-nutrition, demonstrated by animal studies using high-fat and low-protein dietary interventions. Little is known about the impacts of low-fat, high-carb diets and types of dietary carbohydrates on sperm traits. OBJECTIVES: Using a nutritional geometry approach, we investigated the effects of partially or completely substituting glucose for fructose in isocaloric diets containing either 10%, 20%, or 30% fat (by energy) on sperm traits in mice. METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice were fed 1 of 15 experimental diets for 18 wk starting fro

Assessment of Body Fat Percentage Using B-Mode Ultrasound Technique versus Skinfold Caliper in Obese Healthy Volunteers.

Background and aims The measurement of the skinfold thickness at various sites with the calipers has remained the traditional method for estimation of body fat percentage (%BF) in clinical practice. Although this technique is relatively inexpensive and easy to learn, there are more chances of errors while measuring the skinfold thickness by this method. Therefore, no single standard prediction formula for the determination of body fat could be fixed. The aim of our study was to use B-mode ultrasound (US) for measuring the subcutaneous fat thickness and the calipers for skinfold thickness, and

Using bioelectrical impedance analysis for modeling regression and predicting body fat accumulation in dogs in East Thailand.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Obesity in dogs leads to several health problems, such as premature death, and contributes to other diseases. Recently, body fat percentage has been considered to represent the body condition of dogs, and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is the most effective method for accurately measuring body fat in dogs. In Thailand, information on the body condition of dogs is limited, and there is no standard body fat level for Thai or mongrel dogs. This study was designed to evaluate and analyze the body fat percentage in dogs through BIA using a handheld instrument. The result

Tocotrienols Influence Body Weight Gain and Brain Protein Expression in Long-Term High-Fat Diet-Treated Mice.

Obesity induces serious diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. It has been reported that obesity increases the risk of cognitive dysfunction. Cognitive dysfunction is a characteristic symptom of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. However, the detailed mechanisms of obesity-induced cognitive dysfunction have not yet been elucidated. The onset and progression of obesity-induced severe secondary diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular events, and hypertension are deeply connected to oxidative stress. We hypothesized that obesity induces cognitive dysfunction via acceleration o

Anthropometry-based prediction of body fat in infants from birth to 6 months: the Baby-bod study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Prediction equations generated from anthropometric measures are frequently used to quantify paediatric body composition. We tested the agreeability and predictive power of select (Lingwood and Aris) fat mass prediction equations against body fat measured via ADP; and generated and evaluated new anthropometry-based models for use in the first 6 months of life. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Data were obtained from 278 white European Australian infants at birth, 3 and 6 months. Prediction models (i.e. Baby-bod models) were generated for each time point via stepwise linear regression a

Oral Pharmacological Activation of Hypothalamic Guanylate Cyclase 2C Receptor Stimulates Brown Fat Thermogenesis to Reduce Body Weight.

Linaclotide is a synthetic peptide approved by the FDA for the treatment of constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome and chronic constipation. Linaclotide binds and activates the transmembrane receptor guanylate cyclase 2C (Gucy2c). Uroguanylin (UGN) is a 16 amino acid peptide that is mainly secreted by enterochromaffin cells in the duodenum and proximal small intestine. UGN is the endogenous ligand of Gucy2c and decreases body weight in diet-induced obese (DIO) mice via the activation of the thermogenic program in brown adipose tissue. Therefore, we wanted to evaluate whether oral li
