Emotion regulation (ER) is a key competence in adolescence that is related to multiple psychological outcomes, including adaptive functioning and psychopathological symptoms. The development of ER skills is closely associated with a child's family relational context. Nevertheless, few studies have investigated the physiological ER of adolescents during family interactions that go beyond the mother-adolescent dyad. Thus, little is understood regarding which features of communication in the mother-father-adolescent triad (e.g., warmth of affective exchanges) are relevant to adolescents' physiolo

Participants (N = 126) read one of four scenarios depicting an incident of child physical abuse inflicted by the father. Scenarios varied history of wife abuse (present vs. absent) and severity of child abuse (battering vs. death). Overall, the father was held highly responsible. Greater maternal culpability was assigned when a history of wife abuse was present. The degree to which the mother should have been able to predict the incident of child abuse and maternal responsibility were mitigated when the abuse resulted in the death of her child. Perceptions of maternal psychological stability w

Multicomponent family-based interventions can mitigate the adverse effects of poverty on family functioning. However, benefits are not uniform across families. Limited research has examined how distinct constellations of poverty-related risk shape engagement with and responsiveness to preventive interventions. Using a person-centered approach, this study tested whether pre-intervention risk classes predicted differential engagement with and response to the Fatherhood, Relationship, and Marriage Education (FRAME) intervention, a program based on the Family Stress Model and designed to strengthe

BACKGROUND: Adolescent children of U.S. military veterans may be at increased risk for engaging in substance use; however, this has yet to be examined using nationally representative data. Parental involvement and communication are potential protective factors to target with prevention efforts, but veterans' parenting has not been studied in general, nonclinical populations.
OBJECTIVES: This study presents data on parenting characteristics among fathers who are veterans of the U.S. military and the substance use behaviors of their adolescent children.
METHODS: Data were analyzed from approxi

Anxiety disorders are the most commonly reported form of mental health problem among youth, but they often go undiagnosed and untreated. This study examined the relationship between burn-injured youths' self-reported anxiety levels, as compared with their parent's perceptions of their child's emotional well-being. Burn-injured children were invited to voluntarily complete the Child Version of the 41-item survey, Screen for Child Anxiety Related Disorders, which consists of five anxiety subscales as well as a Total Anxiety Score. Parents were invited to complete the Parent Version. Sixty-three

BACKGROUND: Experiencing Failure to Thrive or malnutrition in early years has been associated with children later displaying low Intelligence Quotient (IQ). The current study's aim was to examine whether Failure to Thrive in Toddlers with Lack of Interest in Eating and Food, a subtype of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder as defined by DSM-5, which has also previously been identified as Infantile Anorexia (IA), was associated with poor cognitive development outcomes during later childhood.
METHODS: The IQs and growth parameter of 30 children (53% female) previously diagnosed and treate

The author examined the therapeutic sequence of 37 child and adolescent cases of neurotic disorder in whom the non-verbal approach was successively taken for more than 6 months. The cases could be classified into two types, according to their choice of non-verbal methods: "simple type" cases, who chose only one method at all their therapeutic sessions and "mixed type" cases, who took various combinations of non-verbal methods during the period of psychotherapy. In "simple type" cases, premorbid character was usually introverted and emotionally stable. As for their family situations, their fath

Secure infant-father and infant-mother attachments are associated with fewer internalizing and externalizing behavior problems in childhood. The attachment network underscores relationships with both fathers and mothers to form four distinct configurations of attachment security (e.g., both secure, both insecure). This exploratory study had three aims: (a) to confirm the four classifications of the attachment network with fathers and mothers, (b) to examine whether longitudinal trajectories of toddler behavior problems differed as a function of the attachment network from 18 to 36 months, and

OBJECTIVES: The benefits of paternal investment have long been explored by assessing the impact of father's presence on child wellbeing. Previous studies, however, have only examined the average effect of father's presence on child survivorship. Here we assess the total fitness cost to men of deserting (or the benefit of staying), by considering effects on the entire progeny. We estimate the total number of children that a deserting father can expect to lose due to reduced survivorship over the life course in five populations, and compare this loss to the benefit gains from remarrying a younge

An emerging (yet still scant) body of research has linked interparental hostility to youth compromised social competence over time among ado … ffered the negative association between interparental hostility at grade 5 and mother-child but not father-child relationship quality at grade 6. Mother-child relationship quality, in turn, was associated positively with youth social competence at age 15. As such, interparental hostility at grade 5 was negatively related to youth social competence at age 15 via mother-c …

Following gender reassignment, transsexuals are often assessed in many different areas with regard to how they are functioning. However, there is little attention paid to the children they may have had prior to the operation and change in lifestyle. Children may present with problems related to the parents transsexualism, or with more generalised difficulties secondary to break-up of the family. A family of a transsexual father is described in which the children presented with difficulties and in which the intervention was successful.

Perinatal father engagement has been shown to improve maternal and infant health outcomes and parental well-being. However, we know little about expectant fathers' infant care self-efficacy and involvement intentions and their associated factors. An urban sample of 97 expectant fathers with less than a college degree completed a survey prenatally that assessed infant involvement intentions, parenting knowledge and beliefs, and expected infant care self-efficacy and coparenting support. Fathers reported high infant involvement intentions, strong infant care self-efficacy and coparenting support

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: To describe factors associated with father involvement in the neonatal intensive care unit using the Heuristic model of the dynamic of parental behaviour and influence on children over time.
BACKGROUND: Research shows that infants with involved fathers have better cognitive development, fewer crying episodes after caesarean birth, improved breastfeeding exclusivity and duration, and more regular sleep patterns. Preterm infants with involved fathers have improved cognitive development.
DESIGN: This cross-sectional exploratory study used survey methodology to explore factors

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between aggressive behaviors, parent-child separation and experience of childhood abuse among junior high school students.
METHODS: A total of 1417 students in ordinary junior high schools from 3 townships in Huoshan, Anhui were involved in this study. Self-made questionnaire was used to estimate aggressive behaviors, parent-child separation in childhood, child abuse and social demographic information of the students under this study.

Synchrony, a construct used across multiple fields to denote the temporal relationship between events, is applied to the study of parent-infant interactions and suggested as a model for intersubjectivity. Three types of timed relationships between the parent and child's affective behavior are assessed: concurrent, sequential, and organized in an ongoing patterned format, and the development of each is charted across the first year. Viewed as a formative experience for the maturation of the social brain, synchrony impacts the development of self-regulation, symbol use, and empathy across childh

BACKGROUND: Few studies have assessed how children are affected by parental alcohol consumption without clinically diagnosed alcohol problems, especially in relation to more long-term and severe consequences. The aim is to investigate how fathers' alcohol use is related to the risk for substance-related disorders in offspring.
METHOD: A prospective cohort study of 64 710 Swedish citizens whose fathers were conscripted for compulsory military training at ages 18-20 in 1969/70. Information on fathers' alcohol consumption, frequency of intoxication and apprehended for drunkenness, was collected
