Clinical and Genetic Analysis of A Father-Son Duo with Monomelic Amyotrophy: Case Report.

Monomelic Amyotrophy (MMA) is a rare neurological disorder restricted to one upper limb, predominantly affecting young males with an unknown aetiopathogenesis. We report a familial case of father-son duo affected by MMA. Whole exome sequencing identified genetic variations in SLIT1, RYR3 and ARPP21 involved in axon guidance, calcium homeostasis and regulation of calmodulin signaling respectively. This is the first attempt to define genetic modifiers associated with MMA from India and advocates to extend genetic screening to a larger cohort. Deciphering the functional consequences of variations

Incommensurability: an obstacle to the integration of psychotherapy and spirituality. the desert fathers as an overcoming epistemological paradigm.

In recent years, the body of literature that deals with trying different ways of integrating spirituality into psychotherapeutic practice ha … methodological problems that supposes a project of this type. We present the writings of the Desert Fathers as an explanatory model that guarantees an epistemologically legitimate integration of spiritual traditions with psychotherapeutic practice. And for that reason, we argue that their writings could constitute a way to overcome the relationship of mut …

Did We Forget Something? Fathering Supports and Programs in Prisons in Victoria, Australia.

This article draws from data gathered for an Australian Research Council-funded study conducted in Victoria and New South Wales between 2011 and 2015, which examined how dependent children are responded to when their primary carer is imprisoned. In particular, this article specifically addresses a gap in knowledge by examining the current state of fathering programs in prison in Victoria. To do so, the views of 39 primary carer fathers incarcerated in Victoria are analysed. We argue that there is a distinct lack of support for fathers in prison, acting as a barrier towards maintaining father-c…

Parenting and Incarceration: Perspectives on Father-Child Involvement during Reentry from Prison.

Large numbers of the more than 2 million people incarcerated in the United States are fathers who, upon exiting prison, return to their families and communities. Nevertheless, fathers' experiences of parenting from prison, their reentry process as a parent, and their involvement with their children after prison is not well understood. This qualitative study examines the experiences of 19 fathers recently released from prison to understand how incarceration shapes parenting and facilitates or presents barriers to father-child relationships. Our findings indicate that, despite the substantial ch…

Should a Teenager Be Allowed to Leave the Hospital AMA to Attend His Father's Funeral?

What should physicians do when an adolescent wishes to risk his physical health and leave the hospital to attend the funeral of his late father? What if the young man's mother, and only remaining guardian, both supports and encourages such a decision? In this Ethics Rounds discussion, we examine the legality, morality, and safety of discharging a minor under such conditions.

Reconstruction of bilateral tibial aplasia and split hand-foot syndrome in a father and daughter.

BACKGROUND: Tibial aplasia is of heterogeneous aetiology, the majority of reports are sporadic. We describe the reconstruction procedures in two subjects - a daughter and father manifested autosomal dominant (AD) inheritance of the bilateral tibial aplasia and split hand-foot syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Reconstruction of these patients required multiple surgical procedures and orthoprosthesis was mandatory. The main goal of treatment was to achieve walking. Stabilization of the ankle joint by fibular-talar-chondrodesis on both sides, followed by bilateral Brown-procedure at the knee join

This report presents an unusual case of absolute non-obstructive azoospermia revealed to be a male 46,XY true hermaphrodite who was successfully treated to father healthy monozygotic twins. A 27-year-old infertile male with non-obstructive azoospermia previously underwent an unsuccessful testicular sperm extraction procedure and refused donor sperm insemination.Revising the patient’s old records revealed that he was born with ambiguous genitalia. He had a 46,XY karyotype and was raised as a male. During childhood he underwent ambiguous genitalia reconstruction, right orchiopexy and left salpin

Germline mosaicism in achondroplasia detected in sperm DNA of the father of three affected sibs.

We describe a sib recurrence for achondroplasia with parents of average stature. The three sibs shared the paternal allele and all carried the same causal mutation in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 gene (FGFR3): G > A nt1138 (Gly380Arg). We were able to identify this mutation on sperm DNA confirming paternal germinal mosaicism. Our family shows that a more precise definition of the recurrence risk is feasible using this approach, based on a single DNA test, which could be offered in selected cases.

[Pseudodominant inheritance of spinal muscular atrophy--father and son suffering from SMA].

BACKGROUND: cancer registries (CRs) are essential tools for oncological surveillance. The accurate coding of topography and morphology (through ICD-O-3 coding), traditionally performed manually, is complex and time-consuming. Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers new opportunities to automate this process, overcoming the limitations of existing algorithms, which often focus only on topography. OBJECTIVES: to develop an AI-based algorithm capable of automatically assigning the combined topography-morphology (topo-morpho) code from a synthetic clinical pathway expressed in natural language (LN-PD

Kallmann syndrome in two sisters with other developmental anomalies also affecting their father.

The classical features of Kallmann syndrome with anosmia and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism were observed in two sisters aged 13 and 19. They had additional malformations including anosmia, bilateral vesico-ureteral reflux and unilateral hearing loss. One of the girls had unilateral coloboma of the optic nerve. The father had unilateral hearing loss and duplication of the left ureter; he died of an unrecognized coarctation of the aorta. He had no clinical signs of hypogonadism or anosmia. It is suggested that the malformations observed in these patients may be due to a dominant inherited defect

Clinical features of an affected father and daughter with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type VIIB.

The clinical features of a father and daughter with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type VIIB are described. They included severe cutaneous fragility, generalized joint laxity, kyphoscoliosis and a slightly dysmorphic face in the adult, with generalized joint laxity and congenital hip dislocation, hyperextensible skin and easy bruising in the child. The dermis contained slightly distorted collagen fibrils when examined by electron microscopy. The disorder is caused by G to A point mutation in the first base of intervening sequence 6 with resultant mis-splicing.

Detection of an unbalanced translocation (4;14) in a mildly retarded father and son by flow cytometry.

A child with impaired intelligence, minor dysmorphisms, obesity and genital hypoplasia was found to have an apparently balanced translocation, 46,XY,t(4;14)(q12;q13), following cytogenetic analysis. The same rearrangement was also detected in the child's father, who had similar phenotypic abnormalities to his son. Detailed study of flow karyotypes produced from lymphoblastoid cell lines established that in both patients the translocation was in fact unbalanced with approximately 11 million base pairs of DNA (corresponding to about 6.0% of chromosome 4 or 11.0% of chromosome 14) being lost.

Genetic counselling in a case of TAR syndrome where the father presented malformations of the feet.

TAR syndrome is usually an autosomal recessive disease; we report a family where the father of the propositus presented malformations of the feet, and review the known cases involving several generations. The authors of these cases concluded that the TAR syndrome is probably genetically heterogeneous.
